Jupiter Transits Through the Houses: A House-by-House Guide
Updated October 22, 2026 · Astrologist.com Editorial
Where Jupiter sat when you were born is a natal placement, read on pages such as Jupiter in the 1st house, and it never moves. Transiting Jupiter is the planet as it travels now, taking about twelve years to pass through all twelve houses of your birth chart. The site does not run a transit calculator, so it will not show you where Jupiter is in your houses today. This guide explains the technique and gives a worked example so you can check your own dates with your natal cusps and an ephemeris.
Placing Jupiter in a house needs a dependable birth time and the cusp longitudes of your natal chart. The method and boundary rule are on the transits through the houses page, and getting the numbers is covered in how to find your house cusps.
Twelve years, twelve unequal stays
The example chart is Lotte's (fictional): born in Utrecht on 27 August 1991 at 06:55, Virgo rising, Placidus houses. Below is one complete Jupiter cycle through her houses, from its entry into her 10th in May 2012 to its exit from her 9th in May 2024.

Calculated with the ephemeris routines behind the free chart, hourly, against Lotte's cusps; dates are UTC. "Time in the house" is the elapsed time between the hourly crossing times, counted in 24-hour days and rounded to the nearest whole day. On a stay in two parts, the time spent back in the neighbouring house is left out. Because crossings fall at different hours of the day, a total can differ by one from subtracting the printed dates: 23 December 2019 to 23 January 2021 is 397 calendar days, but the crossings were at about 03:00 and 18:00 UT, which makes 397.6 days, rounded to 398.
Why the 1st and 7th differ so much. Her 1st and 7th houses are the same width, 20.34°. Jupiter took 349 days over the 1st and 86 days over the 7th. The difference is the retrograde loop. In 2016 Jupiter turned retrograde on 8 January at 23°14' Virgo and direct on 9 May at 13°15' Virgo, both inside her 1st house, so the whole loop played out within it and the stay stretched without any repeat crossing. In early 2022 it went through her 7th quickly and without a station. Its next loop, from 28 July to 23 November 2022, fell inside her 8th.
Why the 2nd and 3rd overlap. Jupiter crossed her 3rd cusp at 21°46' Libra on 7 January 2017, turned retrograde on 6 February only about 1.4° past it, slipped back into the 2nd on 8 March and crossed again on 30 August 2017.
The "about a year" often said of Jupiter is its average time in a sign. Houses are not 30° each, Jupiter's pace changes, and its yearly retrograde loop lands in a different place every time. In this one chart the time spent in a house ranged from 86 to 476 days.
Jupiter reached Lotte's 12th house again on 6 August 2026. Its next loop, from 13 December 2026 to 13 April 2027, falls inside that house, and it crosses her Ascendant on 17 August 2027.
Jupiter through each house
Jupiter is read as growth, generosity, confidence, learning and faith, with excess and overreach as its usual shadow. In a house it shows where astrologers expect more room, more appetite, or more of something than is needed. Treat these as themes to test against your own life, not promises of good fortune. In Placidus houses the 4th and 10th cusps are the IC and MC. Under the Equal-house fallback the free chart uses for birthplaces at an absolute latitude greater than 66°, the wheel's IC and MC labels mark the 4th and 10th cusps, which need not be the true IC and MC; chart angles at high latitudes explains why.
Jupiter transiting the 1st house
Over the Ascendant, Jupiter is linked with confidence, a bigger presence, new starts on your own initiative, and sometimes a heavier appetite in the literal sense. People often describe a sense of more room to be themselves. Overconfidence and taking on too much are the matching risks.
Jupiter transiting the 2nd house
The 2nd is earnings, possessions and the values behind spending. Jupiter here is associated with growth in income or earning skills, generosity, and buying more freely. Astrologers often add that it can expand spending as readily as income.
Jupiter transiting the 3rd house
Jupiter in the 3rd is associated with attention to learning, writing, conversation, short trips and siblings. Courses, a busier calendar of local contacts, and a readiness to say more are common descriptions. Scattered attention is the downside usually named.
Jupiter transiting the 4th house
Crossing the 4th house cusp, the IC in Placidus charts, Jupiter enters the house of home, family and private life. Moving to more space, a growing household, renovation, or a warmer sense of belonging are typical themes. Some astrologers describe it as a good stretch for the inner foundations, with the caution that expansion at home can mean expense too.
Jupiter transiting the 5th house
The 5th is creative work, romance, children and fun. Jupiter is associated with creative confidence, more pleasure-seeking, and generosity toward what you love. Risk-taking and speculation are part of this house, which is why the same transit is linked with overreach.
Jupiter transiting the 6th house
Daily work, routines and health habits take Jupiter's emphasis here. A larger workload, new skills on the job, a better-run routine, or a more generous attitude to colleagues are common readings. So is doing too much, and the tiredness that follows.
Jupiter transiting the 7th house
Jupiter on the Descendant is linked with partnerships, agreements and the people you deal with one to one. Astrologers look for broader or more generous relationships, helpful collaborators and contracts. In Lotte's chart it passed through in just 86 days, a reminder that even a meaningful stay can be brief.
Jupiter transiting the 8th house
The 8th covers shared resources, debt, inheritance, intimacy and deep change. Jupiter here is associated with joint finances growing or being reorganised, help through others' resources, and a greater willingness to look at difficult subjects. Taking on more debt is the other side of the same theme.
Jupiter transiting the 9th house
The 9th covers belief, study, long-distance travel, law, publishing and teaching, themes that overlap with Jupiter's own. Long trips, a course of study, a widening philosophy, or putting your ideas in front of others are common themes. Preaching more than listening is the usual warning.
Jupiter transiting the 10th house
Crossing the 10th house cusp, the MC in Placidus charts, Jupiter enters the house of career and public standing. Astrologers often connect it with wider recognition, a bigger role, or more ambitious goals. These are reflection themes, such as what recognition means to you or which goals feel worth enlarging, not signs that a promotion or any other event is on its way.
Jupiter transiting the 11th house
Friends, groups, networks and future plans fill the 11th. Jupiter is associated with a widening circle, helpful contacts, joining or leading a group, and larger hopes. Spreading yourself across too many commitments is the matching risk.
Jupiter transiting the 12th house
The 12th is retreat, reflection, endings and what happens out of view. Jupiter here is often described as a quieter growth: study done alone, care given or received, generosity that goes unseen, and a clearing out before Jupiter reaches the Ascendant.
Doing this for your own chart
Write down your twelve cusp longitudes, then look up when Jupiter's Tropical longitude reaches each one, checking every day around its stations because a loop can start or end close to a cusp. Report each crossing to the day and name the time standard, for example "00:00 UT". If a loop sits wholly inside one house, expect a long stay with a single crossing, as in Lotte's 1st.
Jupiter's return to its natal degree is a separate event from its house transits, covered in Jupiter return. For the slower planets, see Saturn transits through the houses. Your natal Jupiter is on the free birth chart, and Ask the Astrologist can talk through what it means in your chart.
