Jupiter Transits to Natal Chiron: Twelve-Year Returns, Uneven Counts
Updated October 25, 2026 · Astrologist.com Editorial
Jupiter transits to natal Chiron are the moments when moving Jupiter is exactly 0°, 60°, 90°, 120° or 180° from natal Chiron's place. Jupiter goes round the zodiac in roughly twelve years, so the same contacts come back again and again through a life. They do not come back as copies, though: on one lap Jupiter may pass a point once, and on the next lap pass the same point three times.
Chiron is a small body classed as a centaur, not a planet. In chart reading it is often treated as a sensitive theme, and Jupiter as growth, perspective and support. A Jupiter contact to natal Chiron is sometimes read as an invitation to look at that theme with more room or a wider view. Treat that as optional reflection only: a transit does not cause an outcome, and no result can be inferred from one.
Educational guide: Astrologist.com has no transit tool (no calendar, return chart, timing report or comparison), and the free birth chart shows natal positions only. The dates here were worked out offline for an invented person. Chiron date limit: the chart includes natal Chiron only for births from 1 January 1920 to 31 December 2060, because its Chiron data stop there. For births outside that range it shows no Chiron at all, and this page does not apply.
A natal point that does not move
Natal Chiron is the position Chiron had at one instant, your birth. Once that instant is fixed, the target is a single longitude, and every Jupiter contact is measured against it.
Two features of Chiron itself are easy to mix up with the transits:
- Natal Chiron retrograde. A chart may mark natal Chiron with an R, meaning Chiron was moving backward against the stars when you were born. That describes Chiron's motion at birth. It does not move the natal point afterwards, and it has no part in when Jupiter reaches it. Jupiter's own backward loops are what produce repeated passes.
- Uneven sign changes. Chiron's orbit is very elongated, so it spends far longer in some signs than in others; see why Chiron changes signs unevenly. That decides which sign natal Chiron falls in for a given birth year. It does not change how Jupiter moves.
Moving Chiron after the birth is a separate subject, transiting Chiron against its own natal place, covered in Chiron return.
Worked example: Delft, 3 April 1995, 07:10
An invented person; the positions were produced by the site's own chart code, run offline.
- Birth: 07:10 on 3 April 1995 in Delft. Summer time had begun in the Netherlands on 26 March, so the clock was two hours ahead of UT and 07:10 local time is 05:10 UT.
- Natal Chiron: unrounded 171.7533° (21°45'12" Virgo), marked retrograde, moving backward at 0.070° a day. The chart stores 171.75° and shows 21°45' Virgo. This is inside the 1920 to 2060 Chiron range.
- How the site gets it: a stored table of Chiron positions for noon UT each day, generated by Astrologist.com from Lowell Observatory's astorb orbital record, with a straight line drawn between neighbouring noons. Moving Jupiter comes from the astronomia package's VSOP87B planetary theory. Code version: commit
5d10d9d9. - Study period: 1 January 2000, 00:00 UT, to 1 January 2036, 00:00 UT (ages 4.75 to 40.75), chosen to cover three Jupiter laps.
- Method: Jupiter sampled every six hours, each crossing narrowed to under thirty seconds and each station to about a minute, as a computing step rather than a claim of real-world precision. Dates are UT; dates after October 2026 are forward calculations.

The number in brackets is how many times Jupiter crossed the target on that visit. Every visit of three runs forward, backward, forward; the conjunction's second visit, for example, is 8 December 2015 forward, 8 February 2016 backward and 30 July 2016 forward. In total there are 42 crossings in 24 visits: 15 single crossings and 9 visits of three. Every single crossing was made moving forward.
Grouping rule. A visit is the set of crossings of one target made while Jupiter stays within 30° of it. In this period, between crossings in one visit Jupiter never got more than 9.6° from the target, and it went about 180° away between visits, so the visits are unambiguous.
What the period covers. Jupiter started at 25°13' Aries moving forward, which is also its lowest point in the period, and reached its highest at a backward station on 9 September 2035 at 20°43' Taurus, three full laps plus 25.5°, with 65 stations along the way. It ended at 10°44' Taurus, moving backward. No station fell exactly on a target, so there are no touches to count; the nearest was 0.42° short of one.
Inside the period, not beyond it. Each target was visited exactly three times. That is a fact about these 36 years, not a rule. The waning trine target, 21°45' Taurus, sits just past the period's highest point: the September 2035 station came 1.04° short of it, and Jupiter's fourth crossing of that point falls on 2 April 2036, after the period ends. The waning square's next visit, a group of three, starts on 20 August 2036. No visit is cut off by either end of the period: the nearest earlier one, an opposition visit of three, ended on 30 December 1998.
The twelve-year return, measured
The rough twelve-year figure is only background. The spacing between visits to the same target, from the first crossing of one visit to the first crossing of the next, came out like this in the scan:
- Single visit to single visit: 11.95 years (opposition, waning trine and waning square, and the waning sextile from 2002 to 2014).
- Three-crossing visit to the next: 11.90 to 11.94 years.
- Single visit followed by a visit of three: 11.30 to 11.31 years, at the conjunction, waxing sextile, waxing square and waning sextile. A visit of three begins with a forward crossing before Jupiter turns back, so its first date comes early.
The count on each visit depends on whether that year's backward loop happens to straddle the target. In this chart the four waxing contacts and the waning sextile switched between one crossing and three during the period, while the opposition, waning trine and waning square stayed at one on every visit. Another chart, or another period, gives a different pattern; the table above is the only evidence for this one.
How much does an unknown birth time matter here?
Over the Delft calendar date, 00:00 to 23:59 local time (22:00 UT on 2 April to 21:59 UT on 3 April), natal Chiron moved backward from 171.7744° to 171.7042°: a range of 0.0702°, or 4.21 arc-minutes, with no station and no 0/360 wrap. Because Chiron was retrograde, a later birth time gives a slightly lower target.
The whole search was rerun at 145 candidate birth times, every ten minutes and at 23:59. At each candidate every natal value came from that one instant.
- Natal Chiron as the target: all 42 crossings in all 24 visits, every candidate time. The dates moved by 0.29 to 0.78 days, except the first two crossings of the 2008 trine visit, where Jupiter was moving only 0.061° a day near a station and each date moved by 1.14 days.
- Natal Moon, for comparison: across the same day the natal Moon ran from 14°40' to 26°36' Taurus, 11.95°. Run against the Moon's eight targets at the same 145 instants, the total number of Jupiter crossings in the period ranged from 40 to 54, the count at the Moon conjunction alone was 3, 5 or 7, and the first crossing date of some contacts moved by up to 303 days.
- Ascendant: across the day it passed through all twelve signs, so without a birth time no Ascendant contact can be dated at all.
So for this chart the unknown birth time left the Chiron counts unchanged and moved the dates by about a day at most. That is a measured result for this chart and period. A chart where a Jupiter station falls within the day's Chiron range would behave differently.
Rounding and a second ephemeris
- The chart's rounded value. Both the stored 171.75° and the displayed 21°45' are 0.0033° below the full value. Using it changed no count and no date; crossings moved by 0.33 to 1.31 hours, the most again in the slow 2008 trine pair.
- The Swiss Ephemeris gives natal Chiron 171.753290° for this birth, so the site's value is 0.148 arc-seconds higher. That is the measured difference for this one instant, not a bound for other births. Solving every crossing directly with Swiss Jupiter, once against the site's target and once against the Swiss one, the two answers differed by about a minute at most (0.018 hours, close to the 15-second resolution of the solution).
- Jupiter. Swiss Jupiter sat within 0.50 arc-seconds of the site's target at every crossing, and the 65 stations in the period agree with Swiss within 0.32 arc-seconds and 0.011 hours.
The repository's tests treat these comparisons separately from their pass limits. Its Chiron check fails if any daily noon value is more than 0.05° from Swiss or any station more than 0.25 hours out; in this batch's run the observed figures were far smaller, a largest difference of 0.00066° and a worst station of 0.059 hours across 276 stations. Its Jupiter check gave a largest daily difference of 3.78 arc-seconds and 258 of 258 stations paired, the worst 0.013 hours apart. Neither check is a statement about how accurately any transit date is known.
Possible themes when Jupiter contacts Chiron
Weigh any of these only beside natal Chiron's sign and aspects (and its house, if the birth time is trustworthy). They are questions, not findings:
- Conjunction. Noticing where a sensitive theme could be given more room, time or patience.
- Squares. Hope or ambition set against something tender; often read as a prompt to keep expectations generous but realistic.
- Opposition. Other people's perspectives on that theme, set against your own.
- Trines and sextiles. Often seen as easier times to learn about the theme or to share what you know.
These are patterns, not destiny, and nothing here means that a transit brings healing, a breakthrough, recovery, illness, or any financial, work or relationship outcome. Saturn's slower contacts to the same kind of target are worked through in Saturn transits to natal Chiron. For the natal aspects, see Jupiter conjunct Chiron.
Doing it for your own chart
- Confirm the birth date is between 1 January 1920 and 31 December 2060; otherwise the chart has no Chiron, and both natal Chiron and moving Jupiter should come from one outside ephemeris.
- Read natal Chiron from the free birth chart and convert it to a longitude from 0° Aries. A displayed minute can hide up to about 0.005° below it or about 0.022° above it.
- Add 0°, 60°, 90°, 120°, 180°, 240°, 270° and 300° to get the eight targets.
- Choose a period. In a Tropical ephemeris, note Jupiter's lowest and highest places in it, list every crossing of each target with its direction, and group them into visits. Check the stations near the ends of the period for a visit that runs past an end.
- If the birth time is uncertain, find natal Chiron at the earliest and latest possible times, and look for a Jupiter station between those two values. Only a station there can change a count.
There is a manual walk-through in how to read transits without a transit tool. Ask the Astrologist can discuss natal Chiron, or dates you have looked up yourself; it does not calculate transit dates.
