Neptune Transits to Natal Chiron: When the Birth Time Moves the Dates

Updated October 26, 2026 · Astrologist.com Editorial

← Back to Transits

Neptune contacts natal Chiron whenever the planet, moving through the sky, sits exactly on the birth position of Chiron or 60°, 90°, 120° or 180° from it, counted either way round. Neptune covers only a couple of degrees a year and spends about five months of each year moving backward, so one contact may mean a single date or a run of several, and you only find out which by scanning the dates.

Astronomers class Chiron as a centaur: a small body, not a planet, travelling mostly between the orbits of Saturn and Uranus. Astrologers often treat natal Chiron as a tender or sensitive theme, and Neptune as imagination, ideals and whatever is hard to pin down. A Neptune-Chiron contact can be used as a cue for reflection if you find that helpful; it is not a cause of anything, and it predicts nothing about a person.

The practical lesson of this page: if you do not know your birth time, natal Chiron is a small range rather than one point, and how far that range moves a Neptune date depends on how fast Neptune is moving at that particular crossing and how close it is to turning. It is not a fixed amount for Neptune. Near a turning point, the range can even change how many crossings there are.

For learning only: there is no transit feature on Astrologist.com, so no transit calendar, return chart, timing report or comparison. The free birth chart gives the natal chart and nothing more; all dates here were calculated separately, offline, for a fictional person. Chiron coverage: births from 1 January 1920 through 31 December 2060 get a natal Chiron in the chart. Births on other dates get none, and this page does not cover them.

Worked example: Zwolle, 10 November 1996, 19:55

A fictional birth, with every position taken from the chart's own calculation code, run outside the site.

  • Birth: 19:55 on 10 November 1996 in Zwolle. Summer time had ended on 27 October, so the Netherlands was on UT+1 and 19:55 local time is 18:55 UT.
  • Natal Chiron: 204.361816° before any rounding (24°21'43" Libra), direct. On screen it reads 24°21' Libra, after rounding to 204.36° and then dropping the part-minute. Chiron was moving unusually fast at the time, 0.138° a day, which matters below. Its direction and speed at birth do not affect when Neptune arrives; once the birth instant is fixed the target is fixed.
  • Natal Neptune: 25°19' Capricorn, 90.96° on from natal Chiron, close to a square. See Neptune square Chiron for the reading of that contact as a natal aspect, which is a lifelong chart feature separate from the transits below.
  • Coverage: 1996 lies well inside the 1920 to 2060 Chiron range, and the chart's own coverage field confirms Chiron is included. Keep two limits apart: that date range governs natal Chiron, the target, while moving Neptune is calculated by another routine with its own Swiss test, covering 25 December 1919 to 8 January 2061. Being born inside the Chiron range does not, on its own, vouch for a transit date decades later. This study period lies inside both limits, and the page makes no claim about dates outside them.
  • Dates searched: the birth instant, 18:55 UT on 10 November 1996, through to 1 January 2061, 00:00 UT, which is excluded: ages 0 to 64.14. The cut-off matches the end of the 1920 to 2060 range and is a choice for this example.
  • How the dates were found: Neptune's position every six hours, then each crossing refined to under thirty seconds and each station to roughly a minute. That refinement is arithmetic, not a statement about how well anyone knows Neptune's place. Dates are in UT; those later than October 2026 are computed ahead.

The crossings in the study period

For the stated birth time, 19:55:

Contact to Chiron Target Crossings (UT) Age
Waxing trine (120°) 24°21' Aquarius 23 Feb 2009 D, 14 Sep 2009 R, 24 Dec 2009 D 12.29 to 13.12
Opposition (180°) 24°21' Aries 27 Jun 2035 D, 29 Aug 2035 R, 15 Apr 2036 D, 1 Dec 2036 R, 4 Feb 2037 D 38.63 to 40.24

D marks a forward crossing, R a backward one. That is eight crossings in two groups, one of three and one of five. Three and five are simply what this chart and period produced; there is no fixed number of passes for a Neptune contact.

What the period covers. Neptune began at 25°19' Capricorn, moving forward, and that was its lowest point. Its highest was a backward station on 22 September 2060 at 20°50' Gemini, and it finished at 18°51' Gemini: 145.52° of path with 127 stations, well under one lap, so no stretch was reached on two different laps. The other six targets were not reached:

  • Waxing square (24°21' Capricorn): just below the start. Neptune had crossed it three times in 1995, before the birth, and its forward station of 6 October 1996 was 0.61° above it.
  • Conjunction and waxing sextile (24°21' Libra and Sagittarius): further below the start.
  • Waning trine (24°21' Gemini): Neptune's highest point fell 3.52° short of it. "None in this period" is not "never"; nothing after 1 January 2061 was calculated.
  • Waning square and waning sextile (24°21' Cancer and Leo): further beyond the end.

Nothing cut off. Both groups sit well inside the period. If Neptune had come to a halt exactly on a target, that would be a touch rather than a crossing; for this birth time it never did.

Why the birth time matters here

Suppose the birth time were unknown. Over the Zwolle calendar date, 00:00 to 23:59 local time (23:00 UT on 9 November to 22:59 UT on 10 November), natal Chiron moved forward from 204.2474° (24°14'51" Libra) to 204.3851° (24°23'06" Libra), a range of 0.1377°, or 8.26 arc-minutes. That is a wide range for Chiron, because it was moving fast at the time; in a chart from a year when Chiron is slow, the same uncertainty gives a much narrower range.

How the range was found: the chart's Chiron comes from daily noon values joined by straight lines, and the noon values on 9, 10 and 11 November climb in turn, so Chiron climbed all day, with no station and no 0/360 wrap. Its lowest and highest values are at the first and last moments of the date. 23:59 was the final minute checked; it is a sample, not a proof about the last seconds. Over those same moments the natal Moon covered 13.35°, and each trial time took every natal position from one and the same instant.

The whole search was then rerun for 145 possible birth times, one every ten minutes from 00:00 to 23:50 local time plus 23:59, with natal Chiron worked out afresh for each.

How far each date moves, and why

A quick estimate for how far a crossing moves is the width of the target range divided by Neptune's speed at that crossing. Here is that estimate beside what the search actually found:

Crossing (19:55 birth) Neptune's speed Nearest station Estimate Found
23 Feb 2009 D 0.037° a day 94 days away 3.47 days 3.46 days
14 Sep 2009 R 0.023° a day 51 days away 5.55 days 5.67 days
24 Dec 2009 D 0.026° a day 49 days away 5.00 days 5.14 days
27 Jun 2035 D 0.017° a day 31 days away 8.32 days 7.75 days
29 Aug 2035 R 0.016° a day 32 days away 8.60 days 8.03 days
15 Apr 2036 D 0.038° a day 104 days away 3.64 days 3.64 days
1 Dec 2036 R 0.017° a day 33 days away 7.91 days 8.59 days
4 Feb 2037 D 0.018° a day 32 days away 7.60 days 8.28 days

The trine rows cover only the birth times that give three trine crossings, from just after 01:18 to 23:59 local time (a range of 0.1302°, explained in the next section); the opposition rows cover the whole date.

How to read this table:

  • The same planet, very different spreads. Within one chart and one group, the opposition crossing of April 2036 moved 3.64 days across the birth date and the one of December 2036 moved 8.59 days. The difference is Neptune's pace at each crossing, not Neptune as such.
  • Fast crossings far from a station match the simple estimate almost exactly.
  • Crossings within about a month of a station do not, because Neptune's speed changes over the days the crossing moves. Here the estimate was off by up to 0.7 days in either direction. Next to a station, the estimate stops being useful at all, as the next section shows.

A faster planet near one of its own stations can move as much or more, so this is a comparison within one Neptune chart, not a ranking of planets.

A count that depends on the birth time

On 26 May 2008 Neptune turned backward at 24°15'18" Aquarius. For the 19:55 birth, the trine target is 24°21' Aquarius, so Neptune turned 0.107° before reaching it and the 2008 loop did not count. But the whole-date target range for the trine runs from 24°14'51" to 24°23'06" Aquarius, and that station sits inside it.

  • Births from 00:00 to 01:18 local time: natal Chiron is low enough that Neptune reaches the target before turning. The trine gets five crossings instead of three. For a 00:00 birth the extra two are 21 May 2008 moving forward and 31 May 2008 moving backward, at under 0.003° a day; for a birth ten minutes before the switch they are only four days apart, 24 and 28 May.
  • At 01:18:12 local time: natal Chiron puts the target exactly on the station, a touch rather than a crossing.
  • From then to 23:59: three crossings, as in the table above.

The ten-minute search found the switch between 01:10 and 01:20; it was then narrowed to the second on the chart's own Chiron values. Because Chiron rose all day, there is only one switch. With the Swiss Ephemeris used instead for both Neptune and natal Chiron, the switch falls at 01:16:03, about two minutes earlier, so treat the exact minute as a property of the calculation rather than a sharp fact. No other station in the study period, and neither end of it, fell inside any of the eight target ranges.

So for this chart an unknown birth time does not only blur the 2008 to 2009 dates; it decides whether the trine has three crossings or five. A similar check is worth doing for any chart where a station falls near a target.

Span, time near the target, and how long it feels

Three different things are easy to mix up, and the opposition group shows them clearly:

  • Crossing-group span: the first crossing to the last, 27 June 2035 to 4 February 2037, is 588.5 days.
  • Time near the target: to illustrate, take a band of 1° either side of the target. This band is a choice made for this page only; it is not an orb the site uses or a standard length for a transit. Neptune was inside it for 344 days in three separate stretches (18 May to 11 October 2035, 19 March to 12 May 2036, 21 October 2036 to 14 March 2037), 666 days from first entry to last exit. With a 0.1° band it was 53 days in five short stretches. These were checked every three hours.
  • How long it feels: not measurable. No calculation tells you whether, or for how long, anyone notices anything.

Each answer depends on the question asked, so say which one you mean when you write down "how long" a Neptune contact lasts.

Rounding and a second ephemeris

Three versions of natal Chiron are in play: the full value, the value rounded to 0.01°, and the minute on screen. Rounded, it is 204.36°, 0.0018° under the full value; the on-screen 24°21' corresponds to 204.35°, 0.0118° under. Using the 0.01° value moved the crossings 1.2 to 2.7 hours and changed two dates (24 December 2009 to 23 December, 1 December 2036 to 2 December). Using the displayed minute moved them 7.5 to 17.5 hours and changed three. Both values are above the 2008 station level, so neither changed a count.

One more detail of the chart's own method: it looks up its Chiron table on an internal time scale running about a minute ahead of UT, and with Chiron this fast that adds 0.36 arc-seconds. As an outside check, and only as a check, the same quantities were computed with the Swiss Ephemeris. Its natal Chiron for this birth is 0.188 arc-seconds lower than the site's (an arc-second is 1/3600 of a degree); that is what was measured at this instant, not a statement of accuracy. At every crossing Swiss Neptune sat within 1.83 arc-seconds of the site's target. Solving each crossing again with Swiss Neptune moved it by up to 0.75 hours, the most at the slow crossings, and switching to a target built from the Swiss natal Chiron moved them a further 0.03 to 0.08 hours. None changed date. The Neptune stations in the period agreed with Swiss within 2.36 arc-seconds and 0.055 hours; the 2008 station that decides the trine count was 0.89 arc-seconds lower and 0.004 hours apart in Swiss.

Possible themes when Neptune contacts Chiron

Read any of these only in the context of natal Chiron's sign and aspects, and its house when the birth time is trustworthy. They are open questions, not conclusions:

  • Conjunction. Noticing where ideals or imagination meet a theme that feels sensitive.
  • Squares. Something hard to pin down set beside something tender; often read as a prompt to check what is known and what is assumed.
  • Opposition. Your own picture of that theme set against other people's.
  • Trines and sextiles. Often seen as easier times for quiet, creative attention.

These are patterns, not destiny. Nothing here claims that a Neptune contact heals anything or opens a wound, or that it causes trauma, a crisis, confusion, loss, illness or recovery, or any work, money or relationship event. For Uranus against the same kind of target, see Uranus transits to natal Chiron; for how a target difference moves a near-station Saturn date, Saturn transits to natal Chiron.

Finding your own Neptune-Chiron dates

  1. Make sure the birth falls between 1 January 1920 and 31 December 2060. If not, the chart gives no Chiron, and both natal Chiron and moving Neptune should come from one outside ephemeris.
  2. Take natal Chiron from the free birth chart and express it as a single number of degrees from 0° Aries. Since the minute shown comes from a value already rounded to 0.01°, the real position can lie roughly 0.005° below it or roughly 0.022° above it.
  3. Add 0°, 60°, 90°, 120°, 180°, 240°, 270° and 300° to get the eight targets.
  4. Pick a start and an end date. Using a Tropical ephemeris, follow Neptune between them, stations included, and record each crossing of each target and which way Neptune was moving. Flag a group that runs past either date and any station landing on a target.
  5. If you are unsure of the birth time, calculate natal Chiron for the earliest and the latest time it could be. Each contact then has a target range. If a Neptune station, or Neptune's position on your start or end date, falls inside a range, the number of crossings depends on the birth time. Otherwise, expect the slow crossings next to stations to shift the most.

Test results from the runs for this batch: the Chiron table matched Swiss to within 0.00066° (2.4 arc-seconds) at noon on each of 51,516 days, 25 December 1919 to 8 January 2061, and its 276 stations each paired with a Swiss one, the largest gap 0.059 hours at the chart's internal time scale. Neptune, tested separately over the same days, stayed within 4.27 arc-seconds, and its 280 stations all paired, the largest gap 0.054 hours. These describe positions at daily noon values, not how accurate a transit date is, and the tests allow more than these results.

The step-by-step method is in how to read transits without a transit tool. Ask the Astrologist will discuss natal Chiron and Neptune with you, or dates you have already found; it will not calculate transit dates for you.
