Uranus Transits to Natal Chiron: The Angle to Cover and the Time It Takes

Updated October 26, 2026 · Astrologist.com Editorial

← Back to Transits

A Uranus transit to natal Chiron happens when Uranus, in today's sky, reaches one of eight fixed points measured from your birth Chiron: the same degree, or 60°, 90°, 120° or 180° away on either side. Uranus needs roughly 84 years for one circuit of the zodiac and backs up for around five months each year, so each point is usually crossed in a cluster rather than once.

Chiron is a small body, a so-called centaur, rather than a planet; its orbit lies mostly between Saturn's and Uranus's. In common astrological usage natal Chiron stands for a sensitive or tender area of the chart, and Uranus for change, independence and surprise. Treat any Uranus-Chiron contact as one optional lens for reflection. It does not cause events, and nothing about a person's life can be concluded from it.

The practical lesson of this page: the angle between natal Uranus and natal Chiron tells you how far Uranus has to travel to reach each contact, but not when it gets there. Two people with almost the same angle can reach the same contact more than a year apart in age, and the one who needs to travel further can arrive first.

Educational guide only. Astrologist.com does not calculate transits of any kind: no calendar, return chart, timing report or comparison. The free birth chart stops at natal positions, and every date below was worked out offline for invented people. Chiron coverage: natal Chiron appears in the chart only for births dated 1 January 1920 to 31 December 2060; for other dates the chart omits it and this page does not apply.

The starting angle and what it does not settle

Write natal Chiron as one longitude C counted from 0° Aries, and natal Uranus as U. The eight contacts are the targets C plus 0°, 60°, 90°, 120°, 180°, 240°, 270° and 300°: the conjunction, the waxing sextile, square and trine, the opposition, then the waning trine, square and sextile. Each is a separate target.

At birth, moving Uranus stands exactly at U. So the distance from moving Uranus to natal Chiron always splits into two parts: how far Uranus has moved since birth, plus the starting angle from natal Chiron to natal Uranus, counted forward and taken round 360°. That starting angle tells you how far Uranus must advance to reach each target for the first time:

  • Advance needed = target offset minus starting angle, taken round 360°.
  • To count later laps, follow Uranus's path continuously past 0° Aries, adding 360° each time round instead of resetting.
  • One exception: if a target sits just behind natal Uranus and Uranus's first backward loop after birth carries it that far, the target is crossed backward first. The second example below missed that by 0.19°.

What the advance does not give you is a date. Uranus does not cover the zodiac at an even pace: it loops backward every year, and its average pace changes from one part of the zodiac to another. The birth date matters too, because it fixes where in the sky Uranus starts and whether it is moving forward or backward at that moment. So an angle of advance is not an elapsed time. The rest of the page shows what that means for two charts.

Worked example: Groningen, 25 August 1977, 19:55

Both people on this page are made up; their positions come from running the chart's own code offline.

  • Birth: 19:55 on 25 August 1977 in Groningen. The Netherlands kept summer time in 1977 (UT+2), so 19:55 local time is 17:55 UT.
  • Natal Chiron: unrounded 35.654856° (5°39'17" Taurus), retrograde at the birth. The chart displays 5°39' Taurus: it rounds to 0.01° (35.65°) and then drops the leftover fraction of a minute. With the birth instant fixed, this is a single fixed target, and the fact that Chiron was retrograde has no bearing on when Uranus reaches it.
  • Natal Uranus: 218.384299° (8°23'03" Scorpio), moving forward. Rounded first and then cut off, the chart shows 8°22' Scorpio, a minute below the unrounded value.
  • Starting angle: natal Uranus minus natal Chiron = 182.73°, close to an opposition. See Uranus opposite Chiron for the reading of that contact as a natal aspect, which is a lifelong chart feature separate from the transits below.
  • Coverage: 1977 lies well inside the 1920 to 2060 Chiron range, and the chart's own coverage field confirms Chiron is included. Two separate limits apply here. The 1920 to 2060 range is about natal Chiron, the target. Moving Uranus comes from a different routine, which the repository tests against Swiss on its own, over the same days (25 December 1919 to 8 January 2061). A birth inside the Chiron range does not by itself make any later transit date reliable; these study periods stay inside both, and nothing here says anything about dates beyond them.
  • Study period: from the birth, 17:55 UT on 25 August 1977, up to but not including 1 January 2061, 00:00 UT: ages 0 to 83.35. The end is the close of the 1920 to 2060 range, chosen for this example only.
  • Method: Uranus positions every six hours; each crossing pinned down to within thirty seconds and each station to about a minute. Those are calculation tolerances, not claims about the real sky. All dates are UT, and anything after October 2026 is a forward calculation.

The crossings in the study period

D = Uranus moving forward, R = moving backward. Read the table top to bottom: the contacts arrive in order of the advance needed, and each one came as a group of three crossings, 24 in all. The first crossing of each group is the moment Uranus first reached that target; the other two are the backward and forward passes of the same loop.

What the period covers. Uranus began at the natal Uranus degree, moving forward, and that was its lowest point in the period. It ended on 1 January 2061 at 221.98° (11°58' Scorpio), still moving forward. Followed continuously, that is 363.60° of travel, with 164 stations in between and no turning point beyond either end. Only the stretch from the natal Uranus degree to 11°58' Scorpio was covered twice, in the first and the last years, and none of the eight targets lies in it. The opposition target, 5°39' Scorpio, sits just below the start: Uranus had last crossed it in a group of three in December 1975, April 1976 and September 1976, before this person was born.

Nothing cut off, nothing touched. After its last crossing on 10 September 2060, Uranus finished the period 6.33° beyond the opposition target, moving forward. To come back across it, Uranus would need a backward loop longer than any in this period, the largest of which was 4.15°; nothing after 1 January 2061 was calculated. Had Uranus stopped exactly on a target, that would be a touch, not a crossing; it never did. The nearest station to any target was 0.054° from it, described below.

Second birth: same angle, different timing

A second invented person makes the point of the page.

  • Birth: 06:25 on 22 January 1969 in Cork. Ireland stayed on UT+1 through that winter, so 06:25 local time is 05:25 UT.
  • Natal Chiron: unrounded 359.678640° (29°40'43" Pisces), moving forward. Rounded first to 359.68°, which is slightly above the unrounded value, the chart shows 29°40' Pisces.
  • Natal Uranus: 183.918623° (3°55' Libra as displayed), moving backward at the birth.
  • Starting angle: 184.24°, within 1.51° of the Groningen chart's 182.73°.
  • Study period: the same method, from the birth, 05:25 UT, up to but not including 1 January 2061: ages 0 to 91.94.

Because Uranus was moving backward at the birth, its lowest point was not the start. It kept going back until a forward station on 7 June 1969 at 29°52' Virgo, only 0.19° short of this chart's opposition target, 29°40' Virgo. It did not reach it, so there was no opposition crossing in 1969; the last one had come on 23 September 1968, before the birth. From there Uranus went once round to 11°58' Scorpio at the end: 402.11° of path in all, 398.06° net, 181 stations. The stretch it covered twice, 29°52' Virgo to 11°58' Scorpio, again holds no target. All eight contacts came as single groups of three, 24 crossings.

Here are the first crossings of each contact for both people, in the order Uranus reached them:

Contact Groningen: advance, first crossing, age Cork: advance, first crossing, age Age difference
Waning trine (240°) 57.27°, 30 Dec 1989, 12.35 55.76°, 2 Feb 1981, 12.03 Groningen 0.32 older
Waning square (270°) 87.27°, 11 Feb 1997, 19.47 85.76°, 7 Feb 1988, 19.04 Groningen 0.42 older
Waning sextile (300°) 117.27°, 17 Apr 2004, 26.64 115.76°, 22 Mar 1995, 26.16 Groningen 0.48 older
Conjunction (0°) 177.27°, 23 Jun 2019, 41.83 175.76°, 18 May 2010, 41.32 Groningen 0.51 older
Waxing sextile (60°) 237.27°, 9 Sep 2033, 56.04 235.76°, 30 Jun 2025, 56.44 Groningen 0.40 younger
Waxing square (90°) 267.27°, 27 Aug 2040, 63.01 265.76°, 28 Jul 2032, 63.51 Groningen 0.51 younger
Waxing trine (120°) 297.27°, 1 Nov 2046, 69.19 295.76°, 1 Aug 2039, 70.52 Groningen 1.34 younger
Opposition (180°) 357.27°, 24 Nov 2059, 82.25 355.76°, 28 Nov 2051, 82.85 Groningen 0.60 younger

The Groningen person always needed 1.51° more advance. For the first four contacts they were older when it arrived, as you might expect. For the last four they were younger, by up to 1.34 years at the waxing trine.

Why. Both people share the same moving Uranus; only their targets and birth dates differ. The Groningen person was born 8.59 years after the Cork person, and their natal Chiron sits 35.98° further round the zodiac, so each Groningen target is 35.98° beyond the matching Cork target. The question is how long Uranus took to cover those 35.98°, and that depended on where in the zodiac they fell: 9.10 years from 29°40' Pisces to 5°39' Taurus, but 7.25 years from 29°40' Cancer to 5°39' Virgo. Whenever that took longer than 8.59 years, the Groningen person was older at the contact; whenever it took less, younger.

On this path Uranus took between 6.17 and 7.96 years to go from the start of one sign to the start of the next (each counted from its first arrival): the shortest in Leo and Virgo, the longest in Aquarius and Aries. Those figures describe this stretch of sky between 1974 and 2051, not a rule for every century.

So the starting angle tells you which angle Uranus must cover and in what order the contacts come. The birth date, the stretch of zodiac and Uranus's loops decide when. This comparison shows that for these two charts; it is not an age rule for everyone born with a similar angle.

Slow crossings and an unknown birth time

The Groningen waning trine group shows how much the pace at each crossing matters. On 30 December 1989 Uranus crossed 5°39' Capricorn moving forward at 0.060° a day. It turned forward again on 14 September 1990 at 5°36' Capricorn, only 0.054° below the target, so the backward crossing on 3 September and the forward one on 26 September were made at under 0.01° a day, about a sixth of the December pace.

Without a birth time, natal Chiron could be wherever it stood during the Groningen calendar date, 00:00 to 23:59 local time (22:00 UT on 24 August to 21:59 UT on 25 August). Over that day it drifted backward from 35.6669° to 35.6523°, a spread of 0.0146° (0.87 arc-minutes), without a station or a 0/360 wrap. Between daily noon values the chart joins the points with straight lines, and the three noon values around this date fall one after another, so the extremes lie at the start and end of the day. 23:59 is simply the last minute tried; it does not prove anything about the final seconds. At those same instants the natal Moon ranged over 14.35°, and for each trial time all natal values came from that single instant.

Then the full transit search was run again for 145 trial birth times (each ten minutes from 00:00 to 23:50, plus 23:59), with natal Chiron recalculated for each.

  • Counts: 3 for every contact at all 145 times. No station and neither end of the study period fell inside the range of possible targets.
  • Dates: the fast crossings moved by 0.24 to 0.55 days across the sampled times; the two slow 1990 crossings by 1.48 and 1.45 days.

For Cork, natal Chiron moved forward across its date by 0.0369°, counts again stayed at 3 everywhere, and dates moved by 0.60 to 1.47 days, the largest beside the 2040 forward station 0.38° below the waxing trine target. These spreads belong to these charts and periods only.

Entered with no birth time, the chart anchors its calculation at noon and shows natal Chiron without houses; that noon position is a reference, not an estimate of when someone was born.

Rounding and a second ephemeris

The unrounded Groningen value, the chart's 0.01° value and the displayed minute are three different numbers. Here the 0.01° value, 35.65°, is 0.0049° below the unrounded one, and the displayed 5°39' happens to give the same 35.65°. Using it moved the fast crossings by 1.9 to 4.4 hours and the slow 1990 pair by 12.6 and 12.3 hours, with no count changed. Four dates did change: 12 November 2033 became 13 November, 21 January 2047 became 22 January, 10 September 2060 became 9 September, and 26 September 1990 became 25 September.

For Cork the order is different. The 0.01° value, 359.68°, is above the unrounded one, while the displayed 29°40' gives 359.667°, 0.012° below it. That is why you cannot assume the 0.01° value is always below the real one: rounding comes first and can push it up. For Cork, the 0.01° value moved crossings by 0.5 to 1.3 hours with no date changed, while the displayed minute moved them by 4.7 to 11.6 hours and changed 11 of the 24 dates. No count changed either way.

The chart reads its Chiron table at its internal time scale, which sits about a minute after UT; that changes natal Chiron by 0.03 arc-seconds for the Groningen birth and 0.06 for Cork. The Swiss Ephemeris, a widely used independent ephemeris, was used only to check these numbers, never to produce them. It puts natal Chiron 0.387 arc-seconds above the site's value for the Groningen birth and 0.214 arc-seconds below it for Cork (an arc-second is 1/3600 of a degree). Those are measured differences for these two birth instants, not accuracy figures. At every crossing in both tables, Swiss Uranus sat within 1.41 arc-seconds of the site's target, and solving each crossing again with Swiss Uranus moved it by at most 0.35 hours. Switching to a target built from the Swiss natal Chiron moved the Groningen crossings by 0.04 to 0.27 hours, the most at the slow 1990 pair, and the Cork crossings by 0.02 to 0.06 hours. One date changed: solved entirely in Swiss (Swiss Uranus and the Swiss natal Chiron target), the Cork opposition crossing at 00:03 UT on 28 November 2051 falls at 23:58 UT on 27 November. The Uranus stations in each period agreed with Swiss within 1.35 arc-seconds and 0.033 hours.

Possible themes when Uranus contacts Chiron

Weigh these, if at all, together with natal Chiron's sign, its aspects and, with a dependable birth time, its house. They are prompts for reflection and nothing more:

  • Conjunction. Noticing where a wish for change or independence meets a theme that feels sensitive.
  • Squares. A pull toward something new set beside something tender; often read as a prompt to ask what pace feels fair.
  • Opposition. Your own sense of freedom set against other people's expectations about that theme.
  • Trines and sextiles. Often seen as easier times for trying a different approach.

These are patterns, not destiny. No line here says that a transit heals, reopens a wound, or causes trauma, a crisis, a breakthrough, illness or recovery, or that it brings any event in work, money or relationships. For Neptune against the same kind of target, see Neptune transits to natal Chiron; for where natal Chiron comes from and how a second ephemeris compares, Saturn transits to natal Chiron.

Finding your own Uranus-Chiron dates

  1. Confirm the birth date falls from 1 January 1920 to 31 December 2060. Outside that range the chart has no Chiron, so take both natal Chiron and moving Uranus from a single outside ephemeris.
  2. Read natal Chiron and natal Uranus from the free birth chart and write each as a longitude from 0° Aries. The display rounds to 0.01° and then drops part-minutes, so the true value may be up to about 0.005° under, or about 0.022° over, the minute you see.
  3. Work out the starting angle, natal Uranus minus natal Chiron, and the advance needed for each of the eight targets. Use it to know the order the contacts come in, not their dates.
  4. Choose your dates. With a Tropical ephemeris, trace Uranus from the first day to the last, turning points included, and write down every crossing of every target with its direction. Mark any cluster cut off by the first or last day, any station sitting on a target and any stretch Uranus covers on two laps.
  5. If the birth time is uncertain, find natal Chiron at the earliest and latest possible moments. When a Uranus station or the first or last day of your dates lies between those two values, the number of crossings depends on the birth time.

About the checks behind these numbers: when this batch was prepared, the repository's own tests were run. The Chiron table was set against Swiss on all 51,516 days from 25 December 1919 to 8 January 2061, at noon each day; the biggest gap was 0.00066° (2.4 arc-seconds) and every one of the 276 Chiron stations had a Swiss partner, at most 0.059 hours away on the chart's internal time scale. A separate Uranus test over the same days found a biggest gap of 3.80 arc-seconds, with all 278 stations matched and none more than 0.030 hours off. Both compare positions at noon values. They do not measure transit-date accuracy, and the tests would still pass with larger gaps than these.

To try the method by hand, see how to read transits without a transit tool. If you want to talk through natal Chiron and Uranus, or dates you have worked out yourself, Ask the Astrologist can help; it does not produce transit dates.
