Neptune Transits to Natal Saturn: One Uncertain Target, Two Series

Updated October 24, 2026 · Astrologist.com Editorial

← Back to Transits

Neptune transits to natal Saturn are the dates on which moving Neptune sits exactly 0°, 60°, 90°, 120° or 180° from the place Saturn occupied when you were born. Neptune needs years to get past any one of those places, and its back-and-forth loops can carry it across one several times: in this example every complete group has three or five crossings. Other charts and periods can have a point that is never reached, a group cut off by the start or end of the period, or a station landing exactly on a point, which counts as a touch rather than a crossing. Moving Saturn makes the same set of contacts with natal Saturn, reaching a new one every few years: its return about every 29.5 years, and its sextiles, squares, trines and opposition in between.

Comparing the two series raises a question that is easy to overlook. Both depend on one number, natal Saturn, and that number is only as good as the birth time behind it. If the birth time is uncertain, natal Saturn is uncertain, and both series move at once. This page lists both series for one chart, states a pairing rule, and then recomputes the comparison at birth times sampled across the date, plus the exact time where a count changes, always using the same natal Saturn for both planets.

Astrologers tend to connect Saturn with form, duty, effort over time and limits, and Neptune with ideals, imagination and what resists a clear outline. Many read Neptune against natal Saturn as a prompt to ask how practical commitments and less tangible aims fit together. Treat that as an optional way of reflecting. It forecasts nothing and describes no one's character, health or situation.

Educational guide: Astrologist.com has no transit tool of any kind (no calendar, return chart, timing report or comparison), and its free birth chart shows natal positions only. Every figure on this page was computed offline for a fictional chart. Your own Saturn dates come from comparing your natal Saturn with a Tropical ephemeris.

Shared targets, shared uncertainty

Call natal Saturn's longitude, counted from 0° Aries, S. The eight targets are S, S + 60°, S + 90°, S + 120°, S + 180°, S + 240°, S + 270° and S + 300° (subtract 360 where needed). The first is the conjunction, which for transiting Saturn is its return; the next three are the waxing sextile, square and trine; then the opposition; then the waning trine, square and sextile.

The targets are the same list for Neptune and for Saturn, so the two planets meet at one degree only if they carry the same offset. Neptune at S + 90° and Saturn at S + 90° is a shared target. Neptune at S + 60° and a Saturn return at S are 60° apart. Neptune's waxing square (S + 90°) and Saturn's waning square (S + 270°) lie on opposite sides of the zodiac. And when the target really is shared, Neptune and Saturn remain two independent motions: neither crossing confirms or strengthens the other.

Because the targets are shared, so is their uncertainty. Change natal Saturn by a tenth of a degree and every target moves by that tenth for both planets together.

Worked example: Norwich, 6 January 1991, 18:30

The person is fictional; the positions were calculated offline with the site's own chart code.

  • Birth: 18:30 on 6 January 1991, Norwich. In January Britain keeps Greenwich Mean Time (UT+0), so 18:30 local is 18:30 UT and the calendar date in Norwich coincides with the UT date, 00:00 to 23:59. The zoneinfo database lists that single offset for the whole day.
  • Natal Saturn: the chart displays 26°20' Capricorn, direct. The unrounded value is 296.3374° (26°20'15"), and Saturn was advancing about 0.118° per day, near its fastest.
  • Natal Neptune: 14°20' Capricorn. That is 12.0° behind Saturn, wider than the calculator's 8° conjunction orb, so the chart shows no natal aspect between them.
  • Code version: commit 27b7ef6b of the site's repository. Every Saturn and Neptune position, at birth or later, uses the planetary function behind the free chart: the astronomia package's VSOP87B theory, giving apparent, Earth-centred Tropical longitudes referred to the equinox of date.
  • Study period: from 00:00 UT on 1 January 2005 to 00:00 UT on 1 January 2058, ages 14.0 to 67.0. The span was chosen for the example and means nothing astrologically.
  • Procedure: positions sampled at six-hour intervals; each crossing narrowed to a bracket under thirty seconds and each station to about a minute. These tolerances describe the arithmetic, not the accuracy of the sky. Every group was followed beyond both ends of the period, as far as the tested 1920 to early 2061 span allows. All dates are UT, and those after October 2026 are projections.
  • Why this date: it was picked from a search of invented births because one Neptune station sits close to one of its targets. The natal degree is the chart's own value.

Series 1: Neptune's crossings of the eight targets

During the period Neptune went from 13°51' Aquarius (313.85°), moving forward, to a retrograde station on 16 September 2057 at 14°06' Gemini: counted continuously past 0° Aries, 313.85° to 434.10°, a span of 120.25°. The start is the lowest point; the highest is that station inside the window, since Neptune was moving backward, at 11°56' Gemini, when the window closed.

Neptune to natal Saturn Target In the period Crossings (UT) Age
Waxing sextile (60°) 26°20' Pisces 3 crossings 18 Apr 2023 D, 17 Sep 2023 R, 18 Feb 2024 D 32.28 to 33.12
Waxing square (90°) 26°20' Aries 5 crossings 15 Jun 2036 D, 14 Sep 2036 R, 10 Apr 2037 D, 28 Dec 2037 R, 15 Jan 2038 D 45.44 to 47.03
Waxing trine (120°) 26°20' Taurus 3 crossings 30 May 2050 D, 12 Dec 2050 R, 29 Mar 2051 D 59.40 to 60.23
Conjunction (0°) 26°20' Capricorn none in the period
Opposition (180°) 26°20' Cancer none in the period
Waning trine (240°) 26°20' Virgo none in the period
Waning square (270°) 26°20' Libra none in the period
Waning sextile (300°) 26°20' Scorpio none in the period

Eleven crossings, three complete groups. Outside the window, Neptune crossed the conjunction point three times in 1996, at ages 5.1 to 6.0, and the three waning points before the birth (1940 to 1941, 1954 to 1955, 1968 to 1969). The opposition point, 26°20' Cancer, is not reached anywhere from 1920 to the start of 2061. None found here means none between these dates, nothing more.

The square has five crossings because of where its point sits among Neptune's overlapping loops. Neptune turned retrograde on 30 July 2036 at 26°52' Aries, 0.54° beyond the point, giving the forward crossing of June and the backward one of September 2036; turned direct on 3 January 2037 at 24°03' Aries and crossed forward in April 2037; turned retrograde on 1 August 2037 at 29°07' Aries and crossed back on 28 December 2037; then turned direct on 6 January 2038 at 26°18' Aries, just 0.0244° below the point, and crossed forward on 15 January 2038. Keep that 0.0244° in mind. For the sextile and trine, the nearest stations are 0.79° and 0.20° from their points.

Series 2: Saturn's crossings of the same targets

Same period, same eight targets, now with transiting Saturn. Followed continuously, Saturn ran from 110.39°, a turn to direct motion on 22 March 2005 that took it under its starting value of 114.93°, up to 755.98°, where it turned retrograde on 17 August 2057: almost two full circuits.

Saturn to natal Saturn Target Crossings (UT)
Return (0°) 26°20' Capricorn 12 Feb 2020, 24 Aug 2020 R, 3 Nov 2020; 30 Mar 2049, 12 Jun 2049 R, 21 Dec 2049
Waxing sextile (60°) 26°20' Pisces 16 Apr 2025, 21 Oct 2025 R, 3 Jan 2026; 10 Jun 2054, 4 Aug 2054 R, 20 Feb 2055
Waxing square (90°) 26°20' Aries 27 Jun 2027, 22 Sep 2027 R, 14 Mar 2028; 20 Apr 2057
Waxing trine (120°) 26°20' Taurus 3 May 2030
Opposition (180°) 26°20' Cancer 17 Jun 2005 (third pass of a clipped group); 28 Jul 2034
Waning trine (240°) 26°20' Virgo 28 Sep 2009; 10 Nov 2038, 11 Mar 2039 R, 3 Aug 2039
Waning square (270°) 26°20' Libra 7 Dec 2011, 13 Apr 2012 R, 1 Sep 2012; 12 Oct 2041
Waning sextile (300°) 26°20' Scorpio 21 Nov 2014; 29 Dec 2043, 25 May 2044 R, 25 Sep 2044

That makes 31 crossings, sorted into 15 groups (semicolons divide one group from the next); crossings without an R are forward. One group is clipped: Saturn crossed the opposition point on 6 October and, moving backward, on 11 December 2004, before the window opened, and only its third pass, 17 June 2005, is inside. The first Saturn return is the February 2020 group, at age 29.1. Saturn's nearest station to any point is 0.62° away (7 July 2054, beyond the sextile point).

The pairing rule

Stated before the gaps were computed:

  1. Groups come from the trajectory. Successive crossings of a target by one planet count as one group as long as, in between, that planet never gets more than 30° from the target, measured the shorter way round the zodiac (so never more than 180°). In this chart Neptune moved at most 2.79° away between crossings in a group and never returned to a point after leaving it; Saturn moved at most 6.64° away within a group and reached the far side of the zodiac, about 180° away, between groups. The 30° rule sits well clear of both.
  2. Same directed offset only. A Neptune group is set beside Saturn groups at its own target and no other.
  3. Both neighbours. For each Neptune group in the window, take the Saturn group whose first crossing is the most recent on or before Neptune's first crossing, and the Saturn group whose first crossing is the earliest after it. Report both. If either is not inside the window, it is unmatched.
  4. First crossing to first crossing. Gap = (Saturn group's opening crossing) minus (Neptune group's opening crossing), using the computed timestamps, in days; years in the table are days divided by 365.25. The first crossing is used because, as the next sections show, the number of passes in a group can change with the birth time.
  5. One natal value at a time. Every crossing in a comparison is computed from the same natal Saturn longitude.
Target Neptune group opens Preceding Saturn group Following Saturn group
Waxing sextile, 60° 18 Apr 2023 (3 crossings) unmatched in the window (the previous one, March 1996, is before it) 16 Apr 2025, +729.37 days (+2.00 years)
Waxing square, 90° 15 Jun 2036 (5 crossings) 27 Jun 2027, −3,275.31 days (−8.97 years) 20 Apr 2057, +7,614.29 days (+20.85 years)
Waxing trine, 120° 30 May 2050 (3 crossings) 3 May 2030, −7,331.92 days (−20.07 years) unmatched in the window (the next one, June 2059, is after it)

Signed, the gaps run from 20.07 years before to 20.85 years after; without sign, from 2.00 to 20.85 years. They follow no constant pattern, which is expected for two planets with such different cycles. Saturn groups at the five points with no Neptune group in the window stay in Series 2, unpaired. Nothing in these gaps confirms or predicts anything.

Recomputing the comparison across the birth date

Between 00:00 and 23:59 on the birth date, natal Saturn moved steadily forward from 26°15' to 26°21' Capricorn (296.2468° to 296.3643°), a range of 0.1175°. It had no station that day, so the ends are the extremes, and there is no 0/360 wrap. That range is several times the square's 0.0244° margin, so the comparison was recomputed at 147 birth times: every ten minutes from 00:00 to 23:50 (144 times, including the recorded 18:30), 23:59, and one minute either side of the boundary described below. At each one, the same natal Saturn value was used for the Neptune scan and the Saturn scan, the groups were identified again, and the gaps recomputed from that instant's own timestamps.

Pairing. At every one of the 147 times, the same Saturn groups were paired with the same Neptune groups, and the same two cases were unmatched. Saturn's counts did not change at all: its nearest station is 0.62° from a point, more than five times the day's range.

Gaps. Across those times each gap moved by a few days. The ranges below are the lowest and highest values found at the sampled times. They are sampled estimates, not proven extremes over every minute of the date:

Comparison Gap range at sampled times Spread
Sextile: Saturn after Neptune +728.80 to +731.25 days 2.45 days
Square: Saturn before Neptune −3,276.09 to −3,272.81 days 3.28 days
Square: Saturn after Neptune +7,613.33 to +7,617.37 days 4.04 days
Trine: Saturn before Neptune −7,332.45 to −7,330.18 days 2.27 days

The spreads are smaller than the movement of Neptune's dates alone. A later birth time means a later natal Saturn, so both planets reach each target later. Across the sampled times, Neptune's first square crossing moves by 4.97 days and Saturn's 2027 crossing by 1.69 days, in the same direction, and the gap between them moves by the difference, 3.28 days.

That is why the gap has to be computed at one birth time at a time. Taking the earliest possible Saturn date and the latest possible Neptune date, which belong to different birth times, would suggest a square gap spread of 6.65 days, about twice the sampled figure. The same mistake gives 4.54, 5.90 and 4.11 days for the other three comparisons.

Where the membership changes: one boundary in the square

The 0.0244° margin in the square is where the birth time changes a group. For a birth before about 13:31 UT (a model estimate; the Swiss Ephemeris puts it about 6 minutes earlier), natal Saturn is low enough that the square point lies below the direct station of 6 January 2038, and Neptune's group has three crossings: June 2036 forward, September 2036 backward, April 2037 forward. From that moment on, it has five. The recorded 18:30 is about five hours after the boundary.

At the boundary itself, the two late crossings, the backward one near the end of December 2037 and the forward one in January 2038, meet at the station and become one touch, a single limiting moment that is neither forward nor backward. The three earlier crossings remain. So at that instant the group has three crossings plus one touch, counted separately.

This change does not touch the pairing. The group's first crossing barely moves across the boundary (14 June 2036 at 01:11 UT one minute before it, 01:21 UT one minute after), and the square's gap to the 2027 Saturn group is −3,274.61 days at both instants. Had the rule compared last crossings instead, the gap would jump at the boundary from −3,314.1 to −3,585.8 days, almost nine months, because "the last crossing" would suddenly refer to a different event. That is why the rule was fixed in advance and the boundary is identified here rather than letting the compared event switch silently.

No window edge moves any group in or out. At every sampled time the nearest Saturn crossing to the window's start is 18 or more days before it (in the clipped opposition group, which stays clipped all day and has no Neptune partner), and no crossing of either planet comes within months of the end.

Rounding, transcription and a second ephemeris

These are smaller and separate from the birth time:

  • The chart's 0.01° value, 296.34°, is 0.0026° above the full value. No count changed. Neptune crossings moved by up to 11.5 hours (largest beside the January 2038 station), with two landing on the neighbouring UT day; Saturn crossings by up to 1.4 hours, with one day change.
  • The displayed minutes, 26°20' Capricorn (296.3333°), are 0.0041° below. No count changed; Neptune crossings moved by up to 19.2 hours and Saturn crossings by up to 2.2 hours. Both are far below the square's 0.0244° margin.
  • The Swiss Ephemeris puts natal Saturn 0.054 arc-seconds below the site's value. At every tabled crossing, Swiss Neptune was within 2.18 arc-seconds of the site's point and within 2.13 of a point built from the Swiss natal value; Swiss Saturn within 0.57 and 0.52. In time, Swiss Neptune crossings differ by up to 2.2 hours (again beside the 2038 station) and Saturn crossings by up to 0.06 hours. Swiss places the 2038 station 1.80 arc-seconds lower, giving a margin of 0.0249° from its own natal value. Recomputing all four gaps entirely in Swiss changes each by 0.02 days or less.

Possible themes when Neptune contacts Saturn

Any of these is worth weighing only alongside natal Saturn's sign and aspects (and its house, if the birth time is trustworthy). Each is a question, not a result:

  • Conjunction. Noticing which routines and commitments still have a clear purpose, and which have lost their outline.
  • Squares. A practical structure meeting an ideal or an open question; often read as a prompt to state plainly what a commitment involves.
  • Opposition. Your own sense of duty set against other people's hopes or expectations.
  • Trines and sextiles. Often seen as easier moments for bringing imagination into something long-term.

Nothing here forecasts illness, loss, confusion, deception, or work, money or legal events, and no contact means a structure has to end or dissolve. A Neptune crossing in the same years as a Saturn return adds nothing to the return and does not confirm it. Saturn's own cycle has its own guides: What is a Saturn return? and Saturn square Saturn. For Neptune against natal Jupiter, see Neptune transits to natal Jupiter.

Making the same comparison for your own chart

  1. Note natal Saturn's sign, degree and minute from the free birth chart and express it as a single longitude.
  2. Build the eight targets from it. Neptune and Saturn use the same eight.
  3. Fix your start and end dates first. Then, from a Tropical ephemeris, date each Neptune crossing of each target, do the same for Saturn in a separate list, mark directions, and record how far every nearby station falls from its target.
  4. Sort each list into groups, look beyond both ends of your period, and decide the pairing rule before computing any gap. Keep to same-target comparisons, give both neighbours, and leave a missing neighbour missing.
  5. With an uncertain birth time, work out the whole range natal Saturn could take, including any point where Saturn turned during that time, not just its values at the earliest and latest times. Split that range wherever a target would sit exactly on a station of either planet, or on either planet's position at the start or end of your period, and redo the entire comparison for each piece and at each split level, always using the one natal value for both planets. Within a piece, check several values, because the gaps still drift.

On testing: the site's Saturn and Neptune are each checked against the Swiss Ephemeris in their own validation run, once a day at noon UT from late December 1919 to early January 2061, with every station matched as well; the free chart sets no date limit on either planet. Those runs cover positions and station times, not the time of any given crossing, so this page's crossings and the 2038 station were compared with Swiss separately. For dates before 1920 or after 2060, take natal Saturn and both moving planets from one outside ephemeris with consistent settings.

A step-by-step manual method is in how to read transits without a transit tool. Ask the Astrologist can talk through natal Saturn or dates you have found yourself; it does not generate transit dates.
