Neptune Transits to Natal Mars: Crossings, Passes and Band Stretches

← Back to Transits

A Neptune transit to natal Mars covers the time when Neptune, in its slow orbit, comes to one of eight longitudes set by natal Mars. Three different counts get attached to such a transit, and they are easy to confuse:

  • Exact crossings: the instants Neptune is precisely on the target degree. These can be dated and checked.
  • Passes of one contact: because Neptune loops back each year, one target can be crossed several times in one run of loops. Those crossings are passes of a single contact, not separate contacts.
  • Comparison-band stretches: periods when Neptune is within some number of degrees of the target. With a fixed band and a looping planet, there can be several separate stretches around one set of passes. A band is a yardstick, not a measure of how long anything lasts or how strongly it is felt.

One invented chart, worked through below, illustrates each count.

As for meaning, many astrologers treat Neptune against Mars as an invitation to think about the direction of effort: what you are working toward, whether the aim is still clear to you, and how you want to put energy into it. That reading is optional. It forecasts no event, and nothing here describes anyone's drive, health or ability.

Educational guide: Astrologist.com includes no transit calculator, calendar or return chart, and its free birth chart shows natal positions only. All results on this page are from one offline run for an imaginary person. Your own contacts start from your natal Mars, looked up in a Tropical ephemeris.

Targets and branches

The targets are natal Mars shifted by 0°, 60°, 90°, 120°, 180°, 240°, 270° and 300°, reduced below 360°. A waxing branch is at most 180° ahead of Mars in zodiac order and a waning branch is further round; the two squares, for example, are separate contacts. The figure of about 165 years for a Neptune circuit gives a sense of scale and no more; the window you choose and a scan of Neptune's dated path decide which targets appear.

Worked example: Dublin, 27 November 1982, 03:45

Invented chart, real arithmetic: the free chart's calculation code computed every position here, offline.

  • Birth record: 03:45 local time in Dublin, 27 November 1982. Irish summer time finished on 24 October 1982, leaving the country on GMT, which makes the birth 03:45 UT and the Dublin date identical to the UT date; zoneinfo lists a single offset, UT+0, for the entire day.
  • Natal Mars: 289.8590°, displayed as 19°51' Capricorn, direct at about 0.77° daily. Natal Neptune: 25°57' Sagittarius, 24° or so before Mars in the zodiac and outside any major aspect.
  • Code: repository at 80a3c3f5. Mars and Neptune both use astronomia's VSOP87B planetary series (the free chart's planet routine), output as apparent geocentric Tropical longitude.
  • Window: the birth to 00:00 UT on the last day of 2060. That limit belongs to this example only, lies inside the Mars and Neptune validation span (ending 12:00 UT, 8 January 2061), and is neither a boundary of the technique nor a remark about lifespan.
  • Steps: Neptune positions at six-hour intervals; crossings refined until the bracket is under thirty seconds, stations to about a minute, as bookkeeping rather than a statement of accuracy. Band entry and exit dates were refined the same way, and the years around every group of passes, back to 1920, were scanned to rule out clipping. Dates are UT.

Exact crossings and passes

Contact Target Result Exact dates (UT)
Conjunction (+0°) 19°51' Capricorn crossings found in this window 11 Feb 1993, 8 Jul 1993, 15 Dec 1993
Waxing sextile (+60°) 19°51' Pisces crossings found in this window 18 Apr 2020, 31 Aug 2020, 18 Feb 2021
Waxing square (+90°) 19°51' Aries crossings found in this window 22 Jun 2033, 23 Aug 2033, 11 Apr 2034, 28 Nov 2034, 31 Jan 2035
Waxing trine (+120°) 19°51' Taurus crossings found in this window 31 May 2047, 25 Nov 2047, 31 Mar 2048
Opposition (+180°), waning trine (+240°), waning square (+270°), waning sextile (+300°) 19°51' of Cancer, Virgo, Libra and Scorpio none found in this window no exact date

Four contacts, fourteen exact crossings. The three waning contacts lay behind Neptune at the birth, and the opposition lies beyond 18°52' Gemini, where Neptune stood at the cutoff. No sequence is clipped.

Why three passes for the conjunction and five for the square? It depends on where each target sat among Neptune's yearly loops, not on any rule:

  • Conjunction: only the 1993 backward arc spanned 289.8590°. Neptune turned retrograde on 22 April 1993 at 21°09' Capricorn, 1.29° beyond the target, and turned direct on 30 September 1993 at 18°22' Capricorn, 1.48° short. The 1992 loop had turned back 0.90° short, and the 1994 loop turned direct 0.71° beyond. Forward, back, forward: three passes.
  • Waxing square: two consecutive backward arcs spanned 19.8590°. The 2033 loop turned retrograde 0.26° beyond the target (23 July 2033) and the 2034 loop turned direct 0.30° short of it (30 December 2034). Forward, back, forward, back, forward: five passes, still one contact.

Band stretches are a different count

The natal calculator uses fixed inclusive orbs of 8° for the conjunction, square, trine and opposition and 6° for the sextile. Borrowed here only as comparison bands, they show how differently a looping planet enters and leaves a zone. Astrologist.com uses no transit orb, and no band below says how long a contact is felt.

Contact Exact passes Separate 8° band stretches (UT dates)
Conjunction 3, all in 1993 1 Mar to 29 May 1989; 27 Dec 1989 to 8 Sep 1990; 8 Oct 1990 to 28 Jan 1997; 17 Aug to 28 Nov 1997
Waxing square 5, June 2033 to January 2035 29 Apr to 8 Oct 2030; 1 Mar 2031 to 22 May 2037; 15 Oct 2037 to 24 Mar 2038

Four band stretches around three exact passes; three stretches around five. Every exact pass falls inside the longest stretch, yet the count of stretches has nothing to do with the count of passes: the stretches come from Neptune's loops crossing the band's edges, eight degrees away, while the passes come from loops crossing the target itself. Exact crossings, repeated passes and band stretches are three separate answers to three separate questions.

Birth time and the natal degree

Between the first and last minute of 27 November, Mars moved from 19°44' to 20°30' Capricorn (289.7387° to 290.5080°). It was not stationary that day, so those two minutes are its extremes. Without a time the chart would fall back on a noon position, 20°07' Capricorn, which is only a reference: it is not a birth time and supports no houses or angles.

All Neptune stations lying within a possible target range were found, and each stretch of birth times between them was worked out. The edges below come from minute-by-minute sampling of the unrounded values and are approximate; the Swiss Ephemeris put each one less than a minute away:

  • Waxing square: five passes for births before about 11:56, three after.
  • Waxing sextile: three passes before about 20:43, five after.
  • Conjunction and waxing trine: three passes all day.

The recorded 03:45 is hours from either edge. The natal degree's precision has a smaller effect: the rounded 289.86° moved crossings by up to about 1.5 hours and changed one date (28 to 27 November 2034); the truncated 19°51', 289.85°, is 0.009° low, about 17 minutes of Mars motion, and moved crossings by up to about 13 hours, changing four dates (11 to 10 February 1993, 8 to 9 July 1993, 22 to 21 June 2033, 23 to 24 August 2033). No count changed.

Direction of effort: reflective prompts

Combine these with the sign and natal aspects of Mars; use its house only when the time is trustworthy. Treat them as questions to consider, never as forecasts or as an assessment of drive.

  • Conjunction. What are you working toward, and is the aim still one you would choose today?
  • Squares. Tension between a clear target and a wider ideal. A useful step is to name the next concrete action and check it against the ideal.
  • Opposition. Other people's aims set against yours; a prompt to agree on where shared effort goes.
  • Trines and sextiles. Frequently treated as softer moments for steering effort toward creative or caring work.

None of these contacts indicates fatigue, illness, lack of motivation, injury, addiction, deception, conflict or failure, and none requires anything. Neptune does not cause states or events; a hard contact does not show weakness and an easy one does not show success. Natal Mars-Neptune aspects are permanent chart features with their own pages: Mars conjunct Neptune (natal) and Mars square Neptune (natal). For Uranus, which moves faster, against the same natal point, see Uranus transits to natal Mars.

Checking your own Mars

  1. Convert the Mars reading on the free birth chart to an ecliptic longitude: 30° for every sign before it counting from Aries, then the degrees, then the minutes as a fraction of 60. The chart truncates those minutes.
  2. From that longitude derive the eight targets, keeping each between 0 and 360.
  3. Decide the window before you look. List from a Tropical ephemeris all exact Neptune crossings of each target, group them into runs of loops (one contact per run) and flag Neptune stations near any target. A band, if used, gets its own clearly named list of stretches. Inspect the years just outside the window and mark a run as clipped where it is cut.
  4. With an uncertain birth time, bound Mars by computing it at the earliest and latest possible minutes (at worst the whole local day) and at any Mars station between. The bounds give a range for each target, not a count. Neptune stations inside a range split the birth times into stretches; compute each stretch and refine its edges, as done for the square and sextile above.

Mars and Neptune were tested independently. Each is compared daily, at 12:00 UT, with the Swiss Ephemeris over 25 December 1919 to 8 January 2061 (51,516 dates), and their stations are paired with Swiss stations: 280 for Neptune, within the 0.11-hour allowance, with at most 4.3 arc-seconds of positional difference; 132 for Mars, at most 2.2 arc-seconds. The example's dates, 1982 to 2048, are covered. An extra Swiss comparison for this page gave natal Mars a 0.1 arc-second difference, every tabled Neptune crossing a residual under 2.2 arc-seconds and a timing gap below about 0.7 hours, and both birth-time edges a gap below one minute. Dates outside 1920 to 2060 call for an external ephemeris used for both bodies with one time standard.
