Uranus Transits to Natal Mars: One Circuit, Two Squares, Exact Dates
Updated October 23, 2026 · Astrologist.com Editorial
A Uranus transit to natal Mars is a period when moving Uranus reaches a conjunction, sextile, square, trine or opposition to the degree Mars held when you were born. Natal Mars is a fixed point. Uranus works its way round the zodiac in about 84 years, backing up for around five months each year, and whether a given contact point is crossed once or several times depends on where those loops fall. You find out by scanning, not by rule.
As a reflective theme, Uranus-Mars contacts are usually tied to initiative, pace and the way effort is directed: how you start things, whether your working rhythm still suits what you are trying to do, and where you might want to act more on your own terms. These are things to consider. A transit does not produce action or events, and it is not evidence of temperament.
Educational guide: nothing on Astrologist.com calculates transits, so there is no transit calendar, return chart or automated timing. The free birth chart is limited to the natal chart. The circuit below was computed offline, once, for a made-up chart. To date your own contacts, compare natal Mars with a Tropical ephemeris.
From one Mars degree to eight targets
The example's Mars shows as 13°06' Aquarius. Aquarius starts at 300°, so the display converts to 300 + 13 + 6/60 = 313.10°. The calculation's full-precision value is 313.1095°, which rounds to 313.11°. The displayed figure is truncated to whole minutes; the 313.11° is rounded; the dates below use 313.1095°.
Adding 0, 60, 90, 120, 180, 240, 270 and 300 (subtracting 360 where needed) gives the eight targets: 13°06' of Aquarius (conjunction), Aries (waxing sextile), Taurus (waxing square), Gemini (waxing trine), Leo (opposition), Libra (waning trine), Scorpio (waning square) and Sagittarius (waning sextile). Waxing and waning only say whether Uranus is less or more than 180° ahead of Mars in zodiac order.
Two points are worth fixing before looking at dates. "Uranus square Mars" refers to two contacts, at +90° and +270°, which in the example are about 44 years apart. And several crossings of one target inside one run of loops are passes of a single contact. A station exactly on a target would give a touch instead of a crossing; that is a limiting equality, and a station merely near a target is not one.
The 84 years and the roughly seven years per sign are background. They are averages; seen from Earth Uranus's pace through the signs is uneven, so they cannot be turned into ages or dates for a particular chart.
Worked example: Edinburgh, 8 January 1966, 21:45
A fictional person; real arithmetic, produced by the free chart's calculation code run offline.
- Birth record: 8 January 1966 at 21:45 in Edinburgh. Greenwich Mean Time applied (summer time started on 20 March that year), so the birth was 21:45 UT and the local date ran 00:00 to 23:59 UT. Python's time zone database gives UT+0 for the whole date.
- Natal positions: Mars 13°06' Aquarius (313.1095°), direct at about 0.79° a day. Natal Uranus 19°31' Virgo, retrograde at the birth and about 216° ahead of Mars, so the first contacts to come were the waning ones.
- Routines and code: repository commit
484b0035; Mars and Uranus both from VSOP87B in the astronomia package, the free chart's planetary routine, geocentric Tropical on the ecliptic of date. - Calculation window: from the birth to 00:00 UT on 31 December 2050. It is chosen to span one Uranus circuit: Uranus came back to its own natal degree on 3 November 2049, 17 February 2050 and 18 August 2050, inside the window. The window is a calculation range only.
- Method: 6-hour Uranus samples, crossings bisected under half a minute, stations found to about a minute; the fine steps are arithmetic, not a claim about real-world accuracy. Each group of passes was also checked against the years either side, back to 1920, for completeness. Dates are UT days.

| Opposition (13°06' Leo) | crossings found in this window | 6 Aug 2042 (one crossing) |
All eight sequences are complete inside the window; none is clipped. Seven are triple, one single.
The opposition. Uranus turned retrograde on 17 November 2041 at 12°45' Leo, about 0.36° short of the target, so it did not reach the point that year. It crossed once, moving direct, on 6 August 2042, and at its next direct station, 20 April 2043 at 13°18' Leo, it was 0.20° past the target and stayed beyond it. Measured with the 8° comparison band borrowed from the natal orbs (a yardstick only; Astrologist.com has no transit orb), Uranus was within 8° of the opposition degree in three separate stretches, 18 August 2040 to 16 February 2041, 1 June 2041 to 10 October 2043, and 16 January to 22 July 2044, around a single exact date. Passes, band stretches and lived experience are separate measures.
Not a return. The conjunction to Mars came in 1999; Uranus's return to its own degree came in 2049 to 2050. Uranus was retrograde at the birth; after turning direct in May 1966 it crossed its own birth degree again on 5 September 1966. That was the end of the birth-year loop, not a return. The squares of Uranus to itself are treated in Uranus square Uranus.
Truncated minutes move dates, noon moves counts
Precision of the natal degree. With the rounded 313.11° every crossing moved by under an hour and no date changed. With 313.10°, the value rebuilt from the truncated display, crossings shifted by up to about 12 hours and eight dates moved by one day, among them the conjunction passes (8 to 7 February and 16 to 15 November 1999) and the opposition (6 to 5 August 2042). The 0.0095° gap is only about seventeen minutes of Mars's motion that day, yet Uranus is so slow near its stations that it turns into half a day.
A stated time interval. Suppose the family remembers "about a quarter to ten in the evening", and take that, as an explicit choice, to mean 21:15 to 22:15. Mars moved from 13°05' to 13°07' Aquarius across it. Every count stayed the same and the dates at the two ends differed by at most two days.
The whole local date. Over the full day Mars ran from 12°24' to 13°10' Aquarius, with no station, so midnight and 23:59 are the extremes. Three contacts change count across that range. The edges come from per-minute sampling of the unrounded model and are approximate; the Swiss Ephemeris comparison places each within half a minute of these:
- Conjunction: three passes before about 10:36, one pass (early February 1999) from about 10:36 to about 14:14, three passes after.
- Waxing sextile: three passes before about 03:52, one from about 03:52 to about 05:19, three after.
- Opposition: three passes (October 2041 to July 2042) before about 10:50, one pass after.
The recorded 21:45, and the whole 21:15 to 22:15 interval, sit more than seven hours from the nearest edge. The noon reference, 12°47' Aquarius, does not: it falls in the one-pass zone for the conjunction, giving a single date, 2 February 1999, instead of the three dates that belong to the recorded time. That is why noon is only a stand-in for calculating the date and never a birth time, and why houses and angles cannot be read without the clock time.
Initiative, pace and effort: reflective themes
Weigh these against your Mars sign and aspects, and its house only with a reliable time. They are questions, not outcomes and not verdicts on character.
- Conjunction. How you begin things, and whether that method still fits your aims; some people use it to try a different way of organising effort.
- Squares. Friction between your preferred pace and the pace a commitment demands. The useful question is usually what to renegotiate, stage or drop, not how to push harder.
- Opposition. Other people's initiatives competing with yours for time and energy; it can clarify which efforts you want to lead and which to support.
- Trines and sextiles. Commonly read as easier times to experiment with a new routine for work, training or practice, at a speed you choose.
None of these contacts points to injury, accidents, violence, aggression, illness, job loss, financial events or anything sexual, and none means a sudden change is required. Uranus does not cause outcomes, and neither a hard nor an easy aspect shows recklessness, courage or success. A natal Mars-Uranus aspect is a separate, lifelong feature: Mars conjunct Uranus (natal) and Mars square Uranus (natal). Compare the other cycles in Saturn transits to natal Mars and Jupiter transits to natal Mars.
Finding your own Mars contacts
- Copy Mars's degree and minute from the free birth chart and convert it to a longitude from 0° Aries, minutes divided by 60.
- Add the eight offsets and wrap at 360.
- Write down the start and end dates you are studying. Then, with a Tropical ephemeris, find each date on which Uranus sits exactly on one of the eight degrees, and flag Uranus stations lying within a degree or so of any of them. Peek past both ends of your period: passes that carry on where you cannot look are reported as clipped, not as finished.
- Unsure of the time? Recompute Mars for the earliest and latest plausible clock times and for 00:00 and 23:59 local, and remember that Mars itself can station during a birth date, so check the minutes in between as well. That gives the possible range for each target, not the pass counts within it: note every Uranus station whose longitude falls inside a possible target range, calculate each resulting stretch separately and refine the birth time at each boundary, as the conjunction example above does.
What has been tested, routine by routine: the repository holds Uranus to the Swiss Ephemeris in a daily comparison (one sample at noon UT, late December 1919 through early January 2061) that also pairs each Uranus station, and runs a separate daily comparison of the same kind for Mars, whose largest difference is 2.2 arc-seconds. The Sun and Moon routines are outside both of those tests; they rely on their own 52-chart fixture check. The 1966 birth and all dates in the table, 1966 to 2050, are within the tested span. A separate Swiss comparison for this page found natal Mars 0.1 arc-seconds off and Uranus no more than 1.3 arc-seconds from each target at the listed crossings, worth about 0.2 hours of timing at most. For births or years outside 1920 to 2060, read Mars and Uranus from one outside ephemeris with consistent conventions (apparent, geocentric, Tropical, single time standard). The Chiron and Pluto date limits shown by the free chart are specific to those two bodies.
A longer walk-through of the ephemeris method is how to read transits without a transit tool; for house-based timing see Uranus, Neptune and Pluto transits through the houses. In Ask the Astrologist you can talk over natal Mars, or Uranus dates you have looked up, but the chat will not generate transit dates.
