Saturn Transits to Natal Mars: Squares, Loops and Effort Over Time
Updated October 22, 2026 · Astrologist.com Editorial
Saturn transits to natal Mars are the periods when Saturn in the sky makes a conjunction, sextile, square, trine or opposition to the place Mars held when you were born. Mars in your chart stays put; Saturn travels on, reversing for four to five months each year, and those reversals decide how often a point is crossed: often once or three times in examples like this one. When Saturn stations exactly on a point, two crossings merge into one stationary touch, so the count is not always one or three; check the individual point and any station near it.
Astrologers usually connect Mars with pace, effort, frustration and the actions you choose to take. Under a Saturn contact the focus is often on whether effort is paced for the long run, where progress feels slow, and which actions are worth committing to. Read that as one way to frame the period. It is not a prediction, and it does not describe anyone's temperament.
Educational guide: Astrologist.com offers no transit calculator, no transit calendar, no return chart and no automated timing report. The free birth chart gives you the natal chart only. The dated example below was calculated offline for this article. To find your own dates, hold natal Mars up against a Tropical ephemeris.
Two squares, two trines, two sextiles
Give natal Mars as one number of degrees from 0° Aries (23°18' Cancer is 113.30°). Saturn contacts it at:
| Contact | Point |
|---|---|
| Conjunction | natal Mars |
| Opposition | natal Mars + 180° |
| Squares | natal Mars + 90° and + 270° |
| Trines | natal Mars + 120° and + 240° |
| Sextiles | natal Mars + 60° and + 300° |
Take off 360 whenever a total goes past it. The square, trine and sextile each sit at two different points in the zodiac, so a chart has two Saturn-Mars squares in every circuit, usually several years apart. A retrograde loop that crosses one point three times produces three dates for one contact, not three contacts.
This page labels the half of the circuit from the conjunction to the opposition (Saturn 0° to 180° ahead of natal Mars, in zodiac order) as waxing, and the half from the opposition back to the conjunction as waning. The anchor is natal Mars alone. These are phase names; the site's calculator does not mark aspects as applying or separating.
Saturn takes about 29.5 years to pass all the points, but that is not a timetable. The intervals are uneven, the first contact can come at any age, and the number of passes varies. A conjunction to Mars is also distinct from a Saturn return, which means Saturn meeting natal Saturn.
Worked example: one adult circuit
The person is fictional, and the positions come from running the free chart's own code offline for this page.
- Birth: 14 July 1985, 21:05, Nottingham. British Summer Time (UT+1), so 20:05 UT; the conversion was checked against the Python time zone database.
- Natal Mars: 23°18' Cancer, direct, moving 0.65° a day; 113.2995° at full precision.
- Model: VSOP87B for Mars and Saturn, read through the astronomia package as the site does: apparent, Earth-centred, Tropical, equinox of date. Repository commit
8e65fafb. - Search window: 14 July 2005 to 14 July 2035, ages 20 to 50. Saturn sampled every 6 hours, crossings narrowed by halving to under half a minute (a computing convenience, not real-world precision), every Saturn station found to about a minute and measured against each point and band edge. UT, whole days. Dates after October 2026 are forward calculations.
- Clipped edge: when the window opens, Saturn was still within 8° of the previous conjunction (it left on 26 July 2005). That earlier contact is outside the window and not counted.
| Contact (offset) | Point | Exact (UT) | Age |
|---|---|---|---|
| Waxing sextile (+60°) | 23°18' Virgo | 4 Sep 2009 | 24.14 |
| Waxing square (+90°) | 23°18' Libra | 8 Nov 2011, 30 May 2012, 20 Jul 2012 | 26.32 to 27.02 |
| Waxing trine (+120°) | 23°18' Scorpio | 25 Feb 2014, 7 Mar 2014, 27 Oct 2014 | 28.62 to 29.29 |
| Opposition (+180°) | 23°18' Capricorn | 17 Jan 2020 | 34.51 |
| Waning trine (+240°) | 23°18' Pisces | 22 Mar 2025 | 39.69 |
| Waning square (+270°) | 23°18' Aries | 24 May 2027, 1 Nov 2027, 13 Feb 2028 | 41.86 to 42.58 |
| Waning sextile (+300°) | 23°18' Taurus | 23 Jul 2029, 21 Oct 2029, 8 Apr 2030 | 44.02 to 44.73 |
| Conjunction (+0°) | 23°18' Cancer | 4 Jul 2034 | 48.97 |
The two squares fell fifteen years apart, one with its three passes in 2011 and 2012, the other in 2027 and 2028. The waxing trine came close to being a single hit: Saturn turned retrograde on 2 March 2014 at 23°19' Scorpio, barely past the point, so its first two passes were only about ten days apart.
The squares in detail, with a comparison band
The natal calculator's flat orbs (inclusive 8° for conjunction, square, trine and opposition; inclusive 6° for sextile) are borrowed here just to show the shape of the period. Astrologist.com has no orb rule for transits, and a band of dates is not a measure of how long or how strongly anyone feels a contact.
- Waxing square, 23°18' Libra. Saturn was within 8° from 9 December 2010 to 16 March 2011, retreated, and was back from 2 September 2011 to 16 October 2012. Inside that second stretch it crossed the point moving direct on 8 November 2011, crossed it again while retrograde on 30 May 2012, turned direct on 25 June 2012 at 22°45' Libra, about half a degree short, and crossed it for the last time on 20 July 2012.
- Waning square, 23°18' Aries. One unbroken band from 19 March 2027 to 23 April 2028 holding all three passes. Saturn turned retrograde on 9 August 2027 at 27°52' Aries, 4.6° beyond the point, and direct on 24 December 2027 at 21°01' Aries, 2.3° before it.
Exact passes, band stretches and their durations are three different counts, and none of them says how a period is lived.
If the birth time were missing
The free chart would calculate at local noon. That noon is only a reference for the sums, never offered as the birth time, and no range for the day is displayed. Here the noon Mars is 23°03' Cancer.
Over the full local date, 00:00 to 23:59 BST (23:00 UT on 13 July to 22:59 UT on 14 July), Mars moved from 22°43' to 23°22' Cancer, 0.65° in all, with no station. Rechecking every contact with Mars values ten minutes apart gave the results below. They are results for those sampled values, and the clock times where a count changes are approximate boundaries from this unrounded model and sampling, not exact cut-offs to the minute; a birth within a few minutes of one would need a finer calculation and a check of the ephemeris and coordinate conventions:
- The opposition, the conjunction, the waxing sextile and the waning trine kept one pass each, with dates moving by up to about five days.
- The waning square and waning sextile kept three passes, each date moving by up to about nine days.
- Waxing square: a birth before roughly 01:19 local time gave Mars short of about 22°46' Cancer and only one pass, on 3 or 4 November 2011; later sampled births gave three.
- Waxing trine: a birth from roughly 21:50 local time put Mars beyond about 23°19' Cancer and left one pass, on 27 October 2014; earlier sampled births gave three.
In both cases a Saturn station sits inside the range of possible points, and that, rather than anything special about the birth date, is what makes the count depend on the time. The real birth at 21:05 lies only 45 minutes from the trine's turning point, which is why even a recorded time deserves a quick check either side if it was rounded. The chart's displayed 23°18' moved no date. No houses or Ascendant should be taken from a guessed time.
Possible themes when Saturn contacts Mars
Mars's sign, aspects and, with a reliable time, house shape the reading. What follows are possible themes, not outcomes and not evidence of character:
- Conjunction. Looking at how effort is paced: what you can sustain over months rather than in bursts, and which actions you actually choose.
- Squares. Frustration where effort meets a limit, such as a deadline, a rule or a slow process. Often read as a cue to change method or pace rather than push harder.
- Opposition. Your preferred speed set against outside demands or another person's timetable, which can clarify what is worth contesting and what can wait.
- Trines and sextiles. Commonly described as times when disciplined, steady work is easier to organise.
A difficult aspect does not show harm and an easy one does not show success, maturity or virtue. This page does not read Saturn-Mars contacts as signs of aggression, injury or illness, and makes no sexual inferences. Natal Mars-Saturn aspects are a separate, lifelong chart feature; see Mars conjunct Saturn (natal) or Mars square Saturn (natal).
Finding your own contacts
- Note natal Mars's degree and minute from the free birth chart.
- Add the eight offsets, wrapping past 360.
- Look up in a Tropical ephemeris each date Saturn reaches a point, and every Saturn station within about a degree of one.
- If your birth time is unknown or rounded, repeat with Mars at the start and end of the local birth date (or at your time plus and minus a little), and also at any Mars station inside that interval, since a station makes Mars's extreme value fall between the ends rather than at them. Keep the full range.
No date cut-off applies to Mars or Saturn in the free chart. Both use the same VSOP87B routine, which the code repository checks against the Swiss Ephemeris day by day from 1920 to 2060 and at every station; natal Mars here agreed with the Swiss Ephemeris to under a second of arc, and all dates above fall in that span. For years outside it, take natal Mars and moving Saturn from one outside ephemeris (apparent, Earth-centred, Tropical, one time standard). Chiron's and Pluto's date limits in the free chart apply to those two bodies only.
How to read transits without a transit tool covers the method step by step. Ask the Astrologist can discuss natal Mars or dates you have found yourself; it does not calculate transit dates.
