Saturn Transits to Natal Jupiter: Nearby Points, Separate Crossings
Updated October 24, 2026 · Astrologist.com Editorial
A Saturn transit to natal Jupiter is a period when Saturn in the sky reaches a conjunction, sextile, square, trine or opposition to the degree Jupiter occupied at your birth. Natal Jupiter does not move. Saturn keeps going round the zodiac in about 29.5 years and backs up for four to five months each year, so a single point can be crossed once, crossed three times, or touched at a station. How many crossings a point gets is found by checking it, not by rule.
In astrology Jupiter is usually linked with growth, plans, beliefs and the sense of what is possible; Saturn with limits, structure, time and commitment. A Saturn contact to Jupiter is therefore often framed as a time to test the scale of a plan against what can actually be sustained. That is one lens for optional reflection. It is not a forecast, and it says nothing certain about anyone's character or circumstances.
Educational guide: Astrologist.com has no transit calculator, no transit calendar and no automated timing report. The free birth chart calculates the natal chart only. The dated example on this page was computed offline for this article. To date your own contacts, compare natal Jupiter with a Tropical ephemeris.
The eight points, and their place in Saturn's own cycle
Write natal Jupiter as one number from 0° Aries (J) and natal Saturn the same way (S). Saturn's contacts to Jupiter fall at T = J + a, where a is 0° (conjunction), 60° or 300° (sextiles), 90° or 270° (squares), 120° or 240° (trines) or 180° (opposition), subtracting 360 whenever a total passes it.
Every one of those points also lies somewhere on Saturn's own circuit around natal Saturn, because both are fixed degrees on the same zodiac. Call the natal separation delta = (J - S), taken from 0 to 360. Then the point T sits b = (delta + a) degrees beyond natal Saturn, again from 0 to 360. Saturn passing T is at the same time an exact Saturn-to-Saturn contact (a Saturn return, a Saturn square Saturn, the Saturn opposition Saturn, or a sextile or trine to natal Saturn) only if b equals that contact's exact offset. If b is any other number, the point is simply an angle within the cycle.
Three things do not make two points identical: a natal Jupiter-Saturn aspect within the chart's orb, two positions that look the same once rounded, and two crossings on the same calendar date. Only identical longitudes give one event with two labels, and even then the second label adds no independent confirmation of anything.
Purely as arithmetic, and not the chart below: if delta were exactly 90.00°, the waning square to Jupiter (a = 270°) would give b = 360°, which is 0°, and Saturn's waning square to Jupiter would be the same longitude as the Saturn return. Each crossing of that one degree would carry both names, with identical dates and counts. A real chart almost never has an exact separation, so the useful question is how far apart the two points are and what Saturn does between them.
Worked example: a square that is 2.01° wide
The person is invented; the planetary positions come from running the free chart's own code offline.
- Birth: 29 December 1986, 05:50, Exeter. Greenwich Mean Time all day (UT+0), so 05:50 UT; Python's time zone database gives the same offset for every minute of the date.
- Natal Jupiter: shown by the chart as 17°04' Pisces, direct; 347.0833° at full precision, which is 17°05'00". The chart rounds to 0.01° (347.08) and then drops the fraction of a minute, so the display reads one arc-minute lower than the full value here.
- Natal Saturn: shown as 15°04' Sagittarius, direct; 255.0729° at full precision.
- Separation: delta = 92.0104°, a square within the natal calculator's 8° orb (see Jupiter square Saturn for the natal reading). It is not an exact 90°.
- Model: VSOP87B for Jupiter and Saturn through the astronomia package, as the site uses it: apparent, Earth-centred, Tropical, ecliptic and equinox of date. Code at repository commit
0335d005. - Window: 1 January 2007, 00:00 UT, to 1 January 2037, 00:00 UT (ages 20.0 to 50.0). Saturn read every 6 hours; crossings narrowed by halving to under half a minute (a computing step, not a claim of real-world precision); each station located to about a minute. Dates are UT; anything after October 2026 is a forward calculation.
| Contact to Jupiter (a) | Point | Beyond natal Saturn (b) | Exact (UT) | Age |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Opposition (180°) | 17°04' Virgo | 272.01° | 16 Oct 2008, 25 Mar 2009, 7 Jul 2009 | 21.80 to 22.52 |
| Waning trine (240°) | 17°04' Scorpio | 332.01° | 30 Nov 2013, 27 Jun 2014, 13 Aug 2014 | 26.92 to 27.62 |
| Waning square (270°) | 17°04' Sagittarius | 2.01° | 25 Nov 2016 | 29.91 |
| Waning sextile (300°) | 17°04' Capricorn | 32.01° | 21 Feb 2019, 11 Jul 2019, 21 Nov 2019 | 32.15 to 32.90 |
| Conjunction (0°) | 17°04' Pisces | 92.01° | 6 May 2024, 25 Aug 2024, 28 Jan 2025 | 37.35 to 38.09 |
| Waxing sextile (60°) | 17°04' Taurus | 152.01° | 24 May 2029 | 42.40 |
| Waxing square (90°) | 17°04' Gemini | 182.01° | 10 Jul 2031, 13 Jan 2032, 20 Mar 2032 | 44.53 to 45.23 |
| Waxing trine (120°) | 17°04' Cancer | 212.01° | 22 Aug 2033, 17 Jan 2034, 11 May 2034 | 46.65 to 47.37 |
In each three-date row the middle crossing was made with Saturn retrograde. Four points sit 2.01° beyond one of Saturn's own named contacts: 2.01° (return), 92.01° (waxing square), 182.01° (opposition) and 272.01° (waning square). The other four, at 32.01°, 152.01°, 212.01° and 332.01°, are 28° or more from every one of the eight named Saturn-to-Saturn offsets; for this chart they are positions within the cycle and nothing more.
Four pairs of points, 2.01° apart
Here are the four Jupiter points next to the Saturn-cycle point 2.01° behind each, both from the same scan, in time order:
| Pair | Saturn-to-Saturn point: passes | Saturn-to-Jupiter point: passes |
|---|---|---|
| Waning square to Saturn / opposition to Jupiter | 29 Sep 2008, 3 May 2009, 30 May 2009 | 16 Oct 2008, 25 Mar 2009, 7 Jul 2009 |
| Saturn return / waning square to Jupiter | 14 Feb 2016, 5 May 2016, 7 Nov 2016 | 25 Nov 2016 |
| Waxing square to Saturn / conjunction to Jupiter | 14 Apr 2024, 20 Sep 2024, 7 Jan 2025 | 6 May 2024, 25 Aug 2024, 28 Jan 2025 |
| Opposition to Saturn / waxing square to Jupiter | 24 Jun 2031 | 10 Jul 2031, 13 Jan 2032, 20 Mar 2032 |
The two middle rows show what a station between two nearby points does:
- 2016. Saturn crossed natal Saturn on 14 February, turned retrograde on 25 March at 16°24' Sagittarius, 1.33° past natal Saturn but 0.68° short of the Jupiter point, recrossed natal Saturn on 5 May, turned direct on 13 August, and crossed it a third time on 7 November. The Jupiter point, 2.01° further on, was first reached on 25 November, once. Three passes for the return, one for the square to Jupiter, eighteen days after the last return pass.
- 2031 to 2032. The reverse. The opposition to natal Saturn was crossed once, on 24 June 2031. Saturn passed the Jupiter point on 10 July, turned retrograde beyond both points, came back over the Jupiter point on 13 January 2032 and turned direct on 16 February at 16°03' Gemini, 0.99° past the Saturn point and 1.02° short of the Jupiter point, so only the Jupiter point was crossed again, on 20 March.
The outer rows have three passes on both sides, but they are still separate events. In 2008 and 2009 the order was Saturn point, Jupiter point, Jupiter point (retrograde), Saturn point (retrograde), then a direct station on 17 May 2009 at 14°54' Virgo, only 0.16° short of the Saturn point, then Saturn point, Jupiter point. The 2024 and 2025 pair follows the same alternating order, each Jupiter-point date 21 to 26 days from its Saturn-point neighbour. Nearby is not the same as identical.
Saturn's other four contacts to its own position sit elsewhere relative to Jupiter: the waning sextile to Saturn (7 December 2010, 19 March 2011, 30 August 2011) is 207.99° beyond natal Jupiter, the waxing sextile (28 January 2022) 327.99°, the waxing trine (17 March 2027) 27.99° and the waning trine (20 September 2035, 14 February 2036, 9 June 2036) 147.99°. None of those is a Saturn-Jupiter contact.
What the window includes and leaves out
Inside the window Saturn's longitude ran from 138.16° (a direct station on 19 April 2007, lower than the 144.46° at the window's start) all the way round to 152.89° (a retrograde station on 13 December 2036, higher than the 152.56° at its end). Those turning points, not the window's start and end values, set the outer limits of the range. No one of the 16 points (eight around Jupiter, eight around Saturn) lies in the stretch from 138.16° to 152.89° that Saturn covered at both ends, so each was reached in only one group, and every point was reached at least once: none came back as none found.
Clipping was checked outside the window. Every group above is complete inside it. The next opposition-to-Jupiter group starts on 23 August 2038 and the next waning square to Saturn on 20 November 2037, both after the cut-off; a trine to Saturn on 9 August 2006 lies before it. None of the 58 stations in the window fell exactly on a point (the closest was the 0.16° of May 2009), so every pass in the tables is a directional crossing; no station touch occurred to be counted.
If the birth time were missing
The free chart would use local noon as an internal reference (here Jupiter 17°07' Pisces and Saturn 15°06' Sagittarius), never presented as the birth time and with no houses or Ascendant.
Over the whole local date, 00:00 to 23:59 GMT, Jupiter ran from 17°03' to 17°12' Pisces and Saturn from 15°03' to 15°09' Sagittarius. The two were checked as a pair, at the same moment every minute and rescanned every ten minutes, rather than combining the earliest Jupiter with the latest Saturn. Their separation rose steadily from 92.0011° to 92.0404°, with no turning point inside the date. Across those samples:
- Every one of the 16 points kept its pass count: 1 for the waning square and waxing sextile to Jupiter, 3 for the other six Jupiter points; 3 for the Saturn return, squares, waning trine and waning sextile, and 1 for the other three Saturn points.
- Dates moved by no more than about 3 days for the Jupiter points (the largest, the waning trine, near a station) and about 3.3 days for the Saturn points (the waning square, beside the May 2009 station).
So for this birth the unknown time shifts dates slightly but changes no count and no order. That is a result for this chart, not a promise for others; a birth with a Saturn station closer to one of its points could change a count within the day.
Rounding and transcription
Using the chart's 0.01° output instead of the full values (347.08 and 255.07) changed no count; the largest shift was 2.19 hours for Jupiter points and 3.03 hours for Saturn points, and four Saturn dates moved to the neighbouring UT day: two return passes (13 February and 6 May 2016), the opposition (23 June 2031) and the first sextile, which at full precision lands at 00:00 UT on 7 December 2010 and with the rounded value falls on 6 December.
Copying the displayed minutes (17°04' Pisces, 347.0667°, and 15°04' Sagittarius, 255.0667°) also changed no count. Because the displayed Jupiter minute is one arc-minute below the full value, its dates moved by up to 11.02 hours and two shifted by a day (14 January 2032 and 12 August 2014); the Saturn dates moved by up to 6.49 hours, with the same four day changes. A difference of hours in an exact date is a feature of arithmetic, not of anyone's experience.
Possible themes when Saturn contacts Jupiter
Natal Jupiter's sign, aspects and, with a reliable birth time, house shape the reading. These are optional prompts, not outcomes:
- Conjunction. Looking at which plans or beliefs are worth the long effort, and which were bigger in the imagination than in practice.
- Squares. A plan meeting a limit such as a budget, a deadline or a rule; often read as a cue to resize rather than abandon it.
- Opposition. Ambitions weighed against obligations or other people's timetables.
- Trines and sextiles. Commonly described as times when steady, realistic growth is easier to organise.
None of these promises loss, gain, success or failure, and none is a reading of financial, legal, health or relationship events. A contact that falls near a Saturn return does not make the return "stronger" or the contact "confirmed". The natal Jupiter-Saturn aspect itself is a separate, lifelong chart feature; see Jupiter square Saturn or Jupiter conjunct Saturn for that question. For the reverse direction, faster Jupiter reaching natal Saturn, see Jupiter transits to natal Saturn.
Working out your own Saturn-Jupiter points
- Read natal Jupiter and natal Saturn from the free birth chart and turn each into one number from 0° Aries.
- Add the eight offsets to Jupiter, wrapping at 360.
- Work out delta = Jupiter minus Saturn (add 360 if negative), then b = delta + offset for each point (subtract 360 if needed). A point is also an exact Saturn-to-Saturn contact only when b is exactly 0°, 60°, 90°, 120°, 180°, 240°, 270° or 300°.
- In a Tropical ephemeris, date each crossing of each point, and note every Saturn station within about a degree of a point, or lying between a Jupiter point and the Saturn-cycle point next to it.
- If the birth time is unknown or rounded, repeat with Jupiter and Saturn taken at the same moments across the possible times, including any station of either planet inside that interval.
Jupiter and Saturn carry no date limit in the free chart. Both use the same VSOP87B routine, which the code repository checks against the Swiss Ephemeris every day from 1920 to 2060 and at every station. For this example the Swiss Ephemeris put natal Jupiter within 0.07 and natal Saturn within 0.14 arc-seconds of the site, and at every tabled crossing Swiss Saturn was within 0.34 arc-seconds of the site's point and within 0.27 arc-seconds of a point built from Swiss natal values (0.05 hours or less in time). For years outside 1920 to 2060, take natal positions and moving Saturn from one outside ephemeris in apparent, Earth-centred Tropical longitude and a single time standard.
How to read transits without a transit tool sets out the ephemeris method. Ask the Astrologist can talk through natal Jupiter and Saturn, or dates you have found yourself; it does not calculate transit dates.
