Jupiter Transits to Natal Saturn: Returns, Order and Shifting Gaps
Updated October 24, 2026 · Astrologist.com Editorial
Jupiter transits to natal Saturn are the times when moving Jupiter makes a conjunction, sextile, square, trine or opposition to the degree Saturn held at your birth. That degree stays fixed for life. Jupiter goes round the zodiac in a little under twelve years and reverses for about four months each year, so each point may be crossed once or three times, or met at a station, and the count has to be checked point by point.
Astrologers often read Saturn through structure, responsibility, rules and long commitments. A Jupiter contact to it is commonly framed around room to grow inside those commitments: where a structure could be widened, where a rule has become too tight, or where steady duties could carry more meaning. Take that as an optional prompt for reflection. It does not predict anything and does not describe anyone's character.
Educational guide: there is no transit calculator, transit calendar, return chart or timing report on Astrologist.com. The free birth chart is a natal chart. Every date below was calculated offline, once, for this guide; your own come from a Tropical ephemeris read against your natal Saturn.
Points around Saturn, measured from Jupiter
With natal Saturn as one number from 0° Aries (S), Jupiter's contacts fall at T = S + a for a = 0°, 60°, 90°, 120°, 180°, 240°, 270° and 300°, removing 360 when a sum goes over. Measured from natal Jupiter (J), the same point lies (S - J + a) degrees ahead, taken from 0 to 360. Jupiter's own cycle, the Jupiter return, squares and opposition, uses the points J + a.
When Saturn sits a few degrees behind Jupiter at birth, every Saturn point lies the same few degrees behind the matching Jupiter-cycle point, so Jupiter generally reaches the Saturn point first. The angle between them never changes. The dates do, because Jupiter's speed and its retrograde loops fall differently each time round. Jupiter's average period of about 11.86 years is background, not a way of dating either point.
Worked example: a conjunction 6.88° wide
An invented person; real arithmetic from the free chart's code, run offline.
- Birth: 13 October 1981, 16:20, Cardiff. British Summer Time (UT+1) applied all day; it ended on 25 October that year. So 15:20 UT, matching Python's time zone database.
- Natal Saturn: 13°45' Libra, direct; 193.7486° at full precision.
- Natal Jupiter: 20°37' Libra, direct; 200.6304°.
- Separation: Saturn is 6.8818° behind Jupiter, a conjunction within the natal calculator's 8° orb (natal meaning: Jupiter conjunct Saturn). Measured from Jupiter, the Saturn points therefore sit at 353.12° plus each offset.
- Model: Jupiter and Saturn from VSOP87B via the astronomia package, the routine the site calls; apparent geocentric Tropical longitude, ecliptic and equinox of date; repository commit
0335d005. - Sampling: Jupiter every 6 hours, crossings refined by halving to below half a minute (bookkeeping, not a precision claim), stations to about a minute. UT dates; anything after October 2026 is a forward calculation.

| Waxing square (90°) | 13°45' Capricorn | 83.12° | 1 Feb 2020 | 38.30 |
| Waxing trine (120°) | 13°45' Aquarius | 113.12° | 16 Feb 2021 | 39.35 |
| Opposition (180°) | 13°45' Aries | 173.12° | 9 Mar 2023 | 41.40 |

| Waning square (270°) | 13°45' Cancer | 263.12° | 10 Aug 2025 | 43.83 |
| Waning sextile (300°) | 13°45' Leo | 293.12° | 1 Sep 2026 | 44.88 |
Middle dates in the three-pass rows were crossed with Jupiter retrograde. That makes 12 crossings of Saturn points in the window. Jupiter's own cycle in the same twelve years, scanned the same way, had 20: three passes each at the return, both sextiles, both squares and the waning trine, and single passes at the waxing trine and the opposition. One example: the waxing square to Saturn came once, on 1 February 2020, while the square to natal Jupiter came on 7 March, 27 July and 28 October 2020, because that year's loop (retrograde station 14 May at 27°14' Capricorn, direct station 13 September at 17°24' Capricorn) took in the Jupiter point and stopped 3.66° short of the Saturn point.
Six Jupiter returns beside the conjunction to Saturn
Window: 1 January 1985 to 31 December 2060. Jupiter passed neither natal point between the day after birth and 1985 (checked).
How the dates are paired: crossings of either point belong to the same circuit when less than three years separate one crossing from the next; Jupiter's circuits are about twelve years apart, so this splits them cleanly. Within a circuit, the first Saturn-point pass is set against the first return pass and the last against the last. Pass numbers are not matched one to one, because a circuit can hold three passes at one point and one at the other.
| Circuit | Jupiter conjunct natal Saturn (13°45' Libra) | Jupiter return (20°37' Libra) | Order | First to first | Last to last |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1993 | 4 Jan, 22 Feb, 24 Aug 1993 | 27 Sep 1993 (age 11.96) | S S S J | 267 days | 34 days |
| 2004 to 2005 | 4 Dec 2004, 5 Apr 2005, 4 Aug 2005 | 11 Sep 2005 (23.91) | S S S J | 282 days | 39 days |
| 2016 to 2017 | 13 Nov 2016, 21 May 2017, 28 Jun 2017 | 27 Dec 2016, 19 Mar 2017, 24 Aug 2017 (35.21 to 35.86) | S J J S S J | 43 days | 57 days |
| 2028 to 2029 | 27 Oct 2028 | 2 Dec 2028, 27 Apr 2029, 31 Jul 2029 (47.14 to 47.80) | S J J J | 36 days | 276 days |
| 2040 | 11 Oct 2040 | 13 Nov 2040 (59.09) | S J | 33 days | 33 days |
| 2052 | 26 Sep 2052 | 28 Oct 2052 (71.04) | S J | 32 days | 32 days |
S marks a crossing of the Saturn point, J a return pass. The separation is 6.88° in every row, yet the gap from the first Saturn-point pass to the first return ran from 32 to 282 days, and the last-to-last gap from 32 to 276 days. The first Saturn-point passes were 11.92 to 11.96 years apart, but the first return passes were 11.29 to 11.96 years apart, because in 2016 the loop pulled the first return pass forward. Where Jupiter's retrograde station fell decides each row:
- 1993 and 2005. Jupiter turned retrograde past natal Saturn but short of natal Jupiter (28 January 1993 at 14°42' Libra, 0.95° past it; 2 February 2005 at 18°51' Libra, 5.11° past it and 1.77° short of natal Jupiter). The loop recrossed the Saturn point twice and never reached the return point, which Jupiter then crossed once, 34 and 39 days after the last Saturn-point pass.
- 2016 to 2017. The retrograde station of 6 February 2017 at 23°08' Libra was 2.51° past natal Jupiter and the direct station of 9 June 2017 at 13°13' Libra was 0.53° short of natal Saturn, so one loop crossed both points three times and the passes alternate. A return pass fell between the first and second Saturn-point passes.
- 2028 to 2029. The direct station of 13 June 2029 at 17°30' Libra stopped 3.76° past the Saturn point and 3.12° short of the return point, so only the return point was recrossed.
- 2040 and 2052. The loops came after both points (direct stations at 21°51' Libra in June 2041 and 26°09' Libra in June 2053, both beyond natal Jupiter), so each point was crossed once, about a month apart.
Nothing in the window is clipped: the 2052 passes end in October 2052, the 2053 loop stays beyond both points, and the next circuit would begin after 2060, outside the window and outside the validated range of the calculation.
The window's edges
In the 2016 to 2028 window Jupiter began at 23°09' Virgo, rose to a retrograde station on 8 January 2016 at 23°14' Virgo, fell back to a direct station on 9 May 2016 at 13°15' Virgo (the lowest longitude in the window, lower than the starting value), and then went right round to 27°18' Virgo at the end. None of the 16 points (eight around Saturn, eight around Jupiter) lies in that doubly covered stretch of Virgo, so each was met in exactly one group, and every point was met: no none-found result in this window. Every group is complete; the neighbouring groups (the Saturn conjunction on 27 October 2028 and the return passes from 2 December 2028; the waning square and waning sextile to both planets in 2013 to 2015) fall outside it. The station nearest any point was 0.53° away (June 2017), so all passes were directional crossings and no station touch was counted.
If the birth time were missing
The free chart would then work from local noon as a reference, without presenting it as the birth time and without houses or an Ascendant: Jupiter 20°35' Libra and Saturn 13°43' Libra.
Over the full local date, 00:00 to 23:59 BST (23:00 UT on 12 October to 22:59 UT on 13 October), Jupiter moved from 20°28' to 20°42' Libra and Saturn from 13°40' to 13°47' Libra. They were scanned as pairs taken at the same moment, never mixing an early Jupiter with a late Saturn. Their separation grew steadily from 6.8173° to 6.9120° with no turning point during the date.
- In the 2016 to 2028 window every point kept its count; dates moved by up to 2.11 days for the Jupiter-cycle points and 1.57 days for the Saturn points.
- In the 1985 to 2060 comparison every one of 49 half-hourly samples gave the same six orders shown above. The first-to-first gaps varied only within each row: 266.4 to 267.0 days in 1993, 281.5 to 281.8 in 2005, 42.6 to 43.8 in 2016, 35.1 to 35.8 in 2028, 32.4 to 32.9 in 2040 and 31.6 to 32.0 in 2052.
Those are results for this birth date. A date with a Jupiter station nearer one of the points could produce a different order within the same day.
Rounding and transcription
Natal Saturn's full 193.7486° rounds to the chart's 193.75, which is exactly the displayed 13°45', so using either moved Saturn-point dates by at most 0.62 hours with no change of UT day. For Jupiter, the 0.01° value 200.63 moved dates by at most 0.13 hours; the displayed 20°37' (200.6167°) moved them by up to 4.90 hours and shifted two dates by a day (the first square to natal Jupiter to 6 March 2020, the retrograde waning trine to 30 October 2024). In the six-circuit comparison neither input changed an order or a UT day; the largest shift was 2.95 hours with the displayed minutes.
Possible themes when Jupiter contacts Saturn
Weigh any of these against Saturn's sign and aspects, and its house only if the birth time is dependable:
- Conjunction. Reviewing a long commitment for where it could grow, or where a routine could hold more purpose.
- Squares. Wanting more room than a structure currently allows; often read as a prompt to renegotiate a rule rather than break it.
- Opposition. Other people's plans or offers set against existing duties, which can clarify what to keep carrying.
- Trines and sextiles. Frequently associated with organising steady improvements to something already built.
None of these is a promise of reward, relief, promotion or money, and none is a reading of health, legal or relationship events. A Jupiter contact to Saturn that falls near a Jupiter return is not doubled or confirmed by that closeness. The slower Saturn cycle seen from the other side is in Saturn transits to natal Jupiter, which also explains when two nearby points are the same point.
Finding your own Jupiter-Saturn dates
- Take natal Saturn and natal Jupiter from the free birth chart as numbers from 0° Aries.
- Add the eight offsets to Saturn, wrapping at 360.
- In a Tropical ephemeris, date each crossing of each point, then do the same for natal Jupiter if you want to compare with the return. List every Jupiter station within a degree or two of either point.
- Group the crossings into circuits, and compare first with first and last with last rather than assuming a fixed lag after the return.
- For an unknown or approximate birth time, recompute with both natal positions taken at the same moments across the possible interval, including any station of either planet within it.
Jupiter and Saturn have no date cut-off in the free chart; one VSOP87B routine serves both and is checked in the code repository against the Swiss Ephemeris daily from 1920 to 2060 and at each station. Here the Swiss Ephemeris agreed with the site's natal Jupiter to 0.10 and natal Saturn to 0.14 arc-seconds, and at every crossing listed Swiss Jupiter was within 0.57 arc-seconds of the site's point and within 0.67 arc-seconds of a point built from Swiss natal values, 0.03 hours or less in time. Outside 1920 to 2060, read both natal planets and moving Jupiter from a single external ephemeris in apparent geocentric Tropical longitude and one time standard.
