Uranus Square Uranus: The Waxing and Waning Squares, Dated
Updated October 21, 2026 · Astrologist.com Editorial
In Uranus square Uranus, the moving Uranus forms a right angle, 90°, to the place natal Uranus held at your birth. Uranus needs roughly 84 years to go once round the Sun, so within a lifetime each square usually comes round only once. The waxing square arrives on the way out, before the Uranus opposition, usually in the late teens or around twenty. The waning square arrives on the way back, after the opposition, usually somewhere in the early sixties. Both ages are broad orientation. The real dates come from your natal Uranus degree and from where Uranus's yearly loops happen to fall.
Astrologers usually read the two squares as friction between the life you have and the change you want: a push for room to move, a question about which rules still make sense. That is a pattern people reflect on, not something that has to happen, and nothing on this page predicts an event.
Educational guide: there is no transit calculator, return chart, transit calendar or automated timing report on Astrologist.com, and the free birth chart covers the natal chart only. Every date in the worked example was produced offline for this article; the site does not generate them. For your own squares, look up natal Uranus in your free chart and set it beside a Tropical ephemeris.
The geometry: two square points
Everything starts from natal Uranus as a single number of degrees along the zodiac. The waxing square point is that number plus 90°. The waning square point is the number minus 90°, which is the same as plus 270°; past 360° simply start again from zero.
- Waxing square: natal Uranus + 90°, the first of the four points Uranus meets.
- Opposition: natal Uranus + 180°, the halfway point described on the opposition page.
- Waning square: natal Uranus + 270°, met in the second half of the cycle.
- Return: the natal degree itself, after a completed cycle, covered in Uranus return.
"Waxing" and "waning" only name the half of the cycle a square belongs to. They are not applying and separating aspects; the Astrologist.com calculator does not make that distinction for any aspect. Each phase can also contain more than one exact pass of the same point, and those repeated passes are still one phase, not separate squares.
Why the ages move around
A quarter of 84 years would put the squares at 21 and 63. Real dates miss that. Uranus's orbit is slightly elliptical, so it covers some parts of the zodiac faster than others, and from Earth it appears to stop and move backward for about five months of every year. In an offline check with the calculator's own planetary routines (births on 10 February and 10 August of every year from 1921 to 1996, at 12:00 UT, 152 charts), the first exact waxing square came between ages 18.5 and 22.4, and the first exact waning square between 60.0 and 64.6. Those figures describe that sample, not a rule. Retrograde loops can produce repeated exact passes; the count must be checked for the individual target.
Worked example: an offline calculation
This birth is made up. Uranus's positions come from a one-off offline run of the planetary routine behind the Astrologist.com natal chart; no page of the site produces such dates.
- Birth: 12 August 1970, 14:20, Bristol. British clocks were one hour ahead of GMT all year during the 1968 to 1971 British Standard Time trial, so the birth was at 13:20 UT.
- Natal Uranus: 6°13' Libra (186.22°), moving direct.
- Model: VSOP87B planetary theory via the astronomia library (the calculator's own code path), giving Uranus's apparent Tropical longitude seen from Earth, referred to the ecliptic and equinox of date.
- Search: 12 August 1971 (age 1) to 31 December 2060, with Uranus sampled every 12 hours, each crossing narrowed down to under 30 seconds, and every turning point (station) located to about a minute and measured against both square points and the edges of the 8° band discussed below. That refinement settles the arithmetic, not the astronomy, so dates are given in UT to the day only. Dates after October 2026 are calculated ahead.
| Square | Point | Exact crossings (UT) | Age | Motion at each hit |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Waxing | 6°13' Capricorn | 8 Jan 1990; 6 Aug 1990; 23 Oct 1990 | 19.4 to 20.2 | direct, retrograde, direct |
| Waning | 6°13' Cancer | 26 Jun 2034 | 63.9 | direct |
Reading the table. The waxing square came at 19.4, well before the arithmetic 21, and was exact three times in about ten months. The waning square came at 63.9 and was exact only once. The loops straddled it: Uranus turned retrograde on 11 October 2033 at 6°06' Cancer, about 0.12° before the point, so it never reached it that year; after the June 2034 crossing it turned direct again on 14 March 2035 at 6°29' Cancer, about 0.27° past the point, so it never came back across.
Those two margins are small. They are far larger than the difference between this model and the Swiss Ephemeris in the repository's comparison tests, so the single hit is not a rounding accident here, but a loop that turns this close is exactly where another source or another natal value could change the count. Treat a near miss as a reason to check, not as a fixed fact about the transit.
Exact hits versus the 8° band
For a natal square the calculator allows a flat 8° orb. Using the same 8° around a transit point is done here purely as an educational yardstick. Astrologist.com has no orb rule for transits, and the band says nothing about how long a transit is felt or how much.
Around the waxing square, Uranus entered the band on 10 January 1988, slipped out on 11 July 1988, came back on 28 October 1988 and stayed until 9 January 1992. A last loop then brought it back inside from 2 September to 13 October 1992; that stretch rests on a station only 0.17° inside the band's edge, the kind of detail another ephemeris could remove. Around the waning square the band stretches are 1 July 2032 to 26 January 2033, 12 April 2033 to 6 September 2035, and 5 December 2035 to 18 June 2036. One exact hit, three separate stretches. Write the exact dates and the band dates down separately; they answer different questions.
Unknown birth time
When no birth time is given, the free chart works out the planets at local noon purely as a reference point (noon is not treated as your birth time) and shows no range for the rest of the day. For this birth the noon reference (11:00 UT) gives 6°12' Libra. Across the full local date, from 00:00 to 23:59 Bristol time (23:00 UT on 11 August to 22:59 UT on 12 August), natal Uranus advances from 6°11' to 6°14' Libra and no station occurs that day or within a month.
Rerunning the scan with a natal value taken every ten minutes of that date, and at its first and last minute, kept the hit counts at three and one and moved each exact date by under two days; band dates moved by a day or two. Using the chart's displayed 6°13' instead of the full value moved no date. That steadiness is particular to this birth. A station during the birth date requires checking an interior maximum or minimum as well as the day's endpoints. It does not by itself imply a wider natal range. If a later transit station lies close to the target derived from that range, small changes in the natal longitude can materially shift dates or change the number of exact passes. A trial time gives usable planet positions only; it does not give you an Ascendant, houses or angles.
Ways the squares are interpreted
Natal Uranus's sign is shared by everyone born over several years, so the personal colour comes from its house (with a known birth time) and its aspects. What follows are readings astrologers offer, not things that must occur.
- Waxing square. Often described as a first serious test of independence: questioning plans that were handed down, trying something untested, finding out how much change a life can carry at once. None of this means a young person must rebel, and it is no comment on a family or an upbringing.
- Waning square. Commonly taken as a look back at the changes made around the opposition: which freedoms took root, which turned out to be restlessness, and which commitments still deserve room. It forecasts nothing about health, work or age, and no decision is due by any date.
Uranus changing houses in your chart is a separate measurement; see outer-planet transits through the houses.
Finding your own squares
- Copy natal Uranus (degree, sign, longitude) from the free birth chart.
- Work out natal + 90° and natal + 270°, and stay in degrees: the 8° band can reach into the next sign.
- Scan a Tropical ephemeris for every date Uranus sits on either point, looking closely at the stations around it, since a loop may cross back or turn just before the point.
- Write down which time standard the ephemeris uses, frequently 00:00 UT, and keep your dates to whole days.
The site's natal calculator applies no date limit to Uranus, but the repository's own comparison against the Swiss Ephemeris covers 1920 to 2060, which is why this example stays inside those years. For a natal or transit date outside them, take both positions from the same external ephemeris, using geocentric apparent Tropical longitude and one time standard for both. For the step-by-step workflow see reading transits without a transit tool; the same geometry for Saturn is in Saturn square Saturn. Ask the Astrologist can discuss your natal Uranus with you, but the transit dates have to come from your own ephemeris; it does not compute them.
