Uranus Transits to Natal Sun: Eight Targets in One Dated Window

Updated October 23, 2026 · Astrologist.com Editorial

← Back to Transits

A Uranus transit to the natal Sun is a stretch of time when moving Uranus reaches a conjunction, sextile, square, trine or opposition to the degree the Sun held at your birth. The Sun's degree does not change. Uranus is slow: one circuit of the zodiac takes it about 84 years, it spends roughly seven years in a sign on average, and for about five months of every year it appears to move backward. Those loops decide how many times Uranus crosses a given degree, and the answer has to be found by scanning, not assumed.

Astrologers commonly use Uranus-Sun contacts as an occasion to think about autonomy and direction: which of your aims you actually chose, which you inherited or drifted into, and where you want more room to decide for yourself. That is a reflective use. A transit is not a forecast, it does not make anything happen, and it does not tell you what kind of person you are.

Educational guide: Astrologist.com does not calculate transits, so there is no transit calendar, return chart or timing report on the site. The free birth chart shows the natal chart only. The dates on this page were computed offline, once, for one fictional chart. To date your own contacts, put your natal Sun beside a Tropical ephemeris.

Eight target degrees around one fixed Sun

Write the natal Sun as a longitude counted from 0° Aries. In the example below the chart shows 23°15' Pisces. Pisces starts at 330°, so the displayed value converts to 330 + 23 + 15/60 = 353.25°. The model's full-precision value is 353.2546°, which also rounds to 353.25° at two decimals; the two agree here only by coincidence, and every date below uses the full value. Add each offset and subtract 360 when the sum passes 360:

Contact Offset Target in the example Phase label
Conjunction +0° 23°15' Pisces start of the cycle
Sextile +60° 23°15' Taurus waxing
Square +90° 23°15' Gemini waxing
Trine +120° 23°15' Cancer waxing
Opposition +180° 23°15' Virgo midpoint
Trine +240° (minus 120°) 23°15' Scorpio waning
Square +270° (minus 90°) 23°15' Sagittarius waning
Sextile +300° (minus 60°) 23°15' Capricorn waning

The sextile, square and trine each have two target degrees, one on either side of the Sun, so "Uranus square my Sun" names two separate contacts that can be decades apart. Several crossings of one target degree inside a single run of loops are repeated passes of one contact, not new aspects. If Uranus were to turn direct or retrograde exactly on a target degree, it would touch the point and stop instead of crossing it; that exact equality is a limiting case, and coming close to it is not the same thing.

"Waxing" and "waning" only describe where Uranus stands: between 0° and 180° ahead of the Sun in zodiac order, or between 180° and 360° ahead. They say nothing about whether an aspect is getting closer, and the site's calculator does not mark aspects as applying or separating.

The 84-year figure, and why the conjunction is not a return

The 84 years and the seven years per sign are orientation. Seen from Earth, Uranus speeds up, slows and loops, and signs are not crossed in equal times, so neither figure works as a timetable for a particular chart. Nothing here says which contacts a person will "reach" or at what age. A long enough window can contain all eight targets; a shorter one will contain some of them. Which ones depends entirely on the dates chosen and on where Uranus stood at the start.

A conjunction to the natal Sun is also not a Uranus return. A return measures moving Uranus against natal Uranus. This page measures it against the natal Sun. In the example natal Uranus was 7°58' Leo, about 135° ahead of the Sun, so the two cycles run on different dates: Uranus was exact on the natal Sun in 2009 to 2010, and back on its own birth degree in October and November 2040 and July 2041. The squares of Uranus to itself (1976 to 1977, 2020 to 2021) and its opposition to itself (1997 to 1998), covered in Uranus square Uranus and Uranus opposition, are separate contacts with separate dates again.

Worked example: Leeds, 14 March 1958, 08:20

The person is invented. The numbers are not: they come from running the free chart's own calculation code offline.

  • Birth record: 14 March 1958, 08:20, Leeds. Britain was on Greenwich Mean Time that day (summer time began on 20 April 1958), so the birth was 08:20 UT, and the whole local date ran from 00:00 to 23:59 UT. Python's time zone database gives the same offset for every minute of the date.
  • Natal Sun: 23°15' Pisces as displayed; 353.2546° at full precision. Natal Uranus: 7°58' Leo.
  • Routines and code: repository commit 484b0035. The Sun comes from the astronomia package's apparent solar longitude, the call the free chart makes. Uranus comes from VSOP87B in the same package. Both are geocentric, Tropical, ecliptic and equinox of date.
  • Calculation window: from the birth to 00:00 UT on 31 December 2060. That end date is a cutoff chosen for this example, inside the repository's Uranus validation range, which runs to 12:00 UT on 8 January 2061. The cutoff is a choice, not a point where the calculation stops working, and it says nothing about anyone's lifetime. Uranus's longitude was read every 6 hours, each crossing was bisected to under half a minute and each station located to about a minute. That refinement is arithmetic, not a claim of astronomical accuracy. Dates are UT calendar days.
  • Completeness check: for every target the scan also looked at the years before and after each group of crossings, back to 1920, to see whether a sequence was cut by the window.

What the scan found

Contact (offset) Result Exact dates (UT)
Opposition (+180°) crossings found in this window 9 Nov 1966, 21 Feb 1967, 24 Aug 1967
Waning trine (+240°) crossings found in this window 16 Dec 1979, 21 May 1980, 4 Oct 1980
Waning square (+270°) crossings found in this window 26 Dec 1986, 27 Jul 1987, 7 Oct 1987
Waning sextile (+300°) crossings found in this window 29 Jan 1994, 15 Aug 1994, 16 Nov 1994
Conjunction (+0°) crossings found in this window 24 Mar 2009, 25 Oct 2009, 6 Jan 2010
Waxing sextile (+60°) crossings found in this window 15 May 2024 (one crossing)
Waxing square (+90°) crossings found in this window 18 Jun 2031, 18 Feb 2032, 12 Mar 2032
Waxing trine (+120°) crossings found in this window 13 Sep 2037, 16 Dec 2037, 27 Jun 2038
Opposition (+180°), again crossings found in this window 18 Oct 2050, 19 Mar 2051, 4 Aug 2051

Every sequence is complete inside the window, and none is clipped at either boundary. Because Uranus stood between the waxing trine and the opposition at the birth, the first contact in the window was the opposition, not the conjunction, and the window is long enough for the opposition degree to come round a second time. Eight of the nine sequences have three exact dates; the waxing sextile has one.

The single sextile, and two near misses

Uranus's yearly loop matters more than its average speed. In this stretch of sky each loop backed up about 4.0° and the next one started roughly 4.2° further on, so the loops nearly overlap. A degree inside one loop's backward arc is crossed three times. A degree in the narrow gap between the place where one loop turned retrograde and the place where the next turned direct is crossed once.

The waxing sextile degree, 23°15' Taurus (53.2546°), sat in such a gap:

  • Uranus turned retrograde on 29 August 2023 at 23°04' Taurus, about 0.18° before the target, so the 2023 loop never reached it.
  • It crossed the degree once, moving direct, on 15 May 2024.
  • It turned direct again on 30 January 2025 at 53.2612°, only 0.0066° (about 24 arc-seconds) beyond the target, and so never came back across it.

The 2025 station was close, but close is not a touch: the station longitude is beyond the target in this model, and in the Swiss Ephemeris comparison as well (by about 39 arc-seconds there). One crossing is a complete result and needs no apology.

The waxing square shows the other side of the same geometry. Uranus turned direct on 1 March 2032 at 83.2000°, 0.0546° short of the 83.2546° target, so it had backed over the degree on 18 February and crossed it again on 12 March: two passes 23 days apart around a station, after the first pass on 18 June 2031.

Comparison bands, not orbs

The natal calculator uses fixed, inclusive orbs: 8° for the conjunction, square, trine and opposition and 6° for the sextile, with no extra allowance for the Sun. Used here they are only a yardstick for the shape of Uranus's movement around a degree. Astrologist.com has no transit orb, and none of these numbers measures how long or how strongly a contact is felt.

  • Conjunction, 8°: three separate stretches, 15 March to 20 October 2007, 28 December 2007 to 3 April 2011, and 1 November 2011 to 17 January 2012. The exact dates all fall in the middle stretch.
  • Waxing sextile, 6°: 19 June to 31 October 2022, 9 April 2023 to 21 June 2025, and 26 November 2025 to 11 April 2026, around a single exact date.

Exact passes, band stretches and the experience of a period are three different things.

If the time is uncertain

Across the whole local date the Sun ran from 22°54' to 23°54' Pisces (352.9085° to 353.9045°); the Sun has no stations, so the extremes are the first and last minute. The free chart without a time uses 12:00 as an arithmetic reference only, never as a birth time; here that gives 23°24' Pisces. No houses or angles can be read from a guessed time.

Over that range the conjunction, the waxing trine, both opposition sequences and the three waning contacts kept three passes each and only moved by days (the 2009 to 2010 conjunction passes fall between 18 March 2009 and 25 January 2010, depending on the minute). Two contacts changed count. Edges below come from per-minute sampling of the unrounded model and are approximate:

  • Waxing sextile: three passes (2023 to 2024) for births before about 04:01; one pass from about 04:01 to about 08:30; three passes (2024 to 2025) after about 08:30.
  • Waxing square: one pass (June 2031) before about 07:01; three passes after.

Now suppose the record says 08:20 but could be up to twenty minutes out either way. That interval, 08:00 to 08:40, contains the 08:30 sextile edge. Births at 08:00 and 08:20 give one sextile pass; 08:40 gives three (16 May 2024, 26 January and 3 February 2025). The Swiss Ephemeris comparison puts that edge about six minutes later, near 08:35, mostly because its Sun differs from the site's solar routine by about 14 arc-seconds at this birth, well inside the 0.05° fixture tolerance but large next to a 24-arc-second margin. Neither model settles the count for this record: a time this close to an edge needs a finer calculation with the ephemeris and coordinate conventions confirmed. The waxing square edge, near 07:01 in this model and 07:07 in Swiss, lies outside the interval, so three passes holds for every time in it.

Rounding is a separate effect. Using 353.25° instead of the full value shifted crossing times by about 2 to 12 hours, enough to move three dates by a day (25 to 26 October 2009, 18 to 19 February 2032 and 12 to 11 March 2032), and changed no count.

Autonomy and direction: questions to work with

Set these beside your Sun's sign and natal aspects, and its house only when the birth time is reliable. They are prompts for reflection, not outcomes and not judgements of character.

  • Conjunction. Which parts of your direction are your own choice, and which are habits you would not pick again? A time some people use to try a change in method before committing to a change in aim.
  • Squares. Tension between an established plan and the wish for more room to decide. A useful question is what could be loosened or renegotiated without discarding what still works.
  • Opposition. Other people's expectations set against your own sense of direction. It can sharpen the question of how much independence you want and how you ask for it. It is not a crisis point.
  • Trines and sextiles. Often described as easier openings to experiment with something new at a pace you choose. An option, not an instruction.

None of these contacts shows instability, illness, a move, a job loss, a breakup, a financial event or anything about family history, and none requires a sudden change of any kind. Uranus does not cause events; the reading is about what you notice and decide. A hard aspect does not show rebellion or recklessness, and an easy one does not show success. A natal Sun-Uranus aspect is a lifelong chart feature with its own pages: Sun conjunct Uranus (natal) and Sun square Uranus (natal). The slower and faster cycles are covered in Saturn transits to natal Sun and Jupiter transits to natal Sun.

Dating your own Sun contacts

  1. Take the Sun's degree and minute from the free birth chart and write it as a longitude from 0° Aries (minutes divided by 60).
  2. Add 0, 60, 90, 120, 180, 240, 270 and 300, wrapping at 360.
  3. In a Tropical ephemeris, list every date Uranus reaches each target inside the window you chose, and every Uranus station within a degree or so of a target. Look a year or two beyond each end of the window to see whether a group of passes continues outside it; if you cannot check, call it clipped.
  4. With an unknown or approximate time, work out the Sun at the first and last minute of the local birth date (or the ends of your stated interval); that gives the possible range for each target, not the pass count across it. Then note every Uranus station whose longitude falls inside a possible target range, because the count can change there, as it does in the example above (three passes, then one, then three again across one day). Calculate each resulting stretch separately, refine the birth time at each boundary, and keep the whole span of dates.

Coverage is per routine. The repository tests Uranus against the Swiss Ephemeris at 12:00 UT on every day from 25 December 1919 to 8 January 2061 (51,516 daily samples, largest difference 3.8 arc-seconds) and pairs all 278 of its stations in that range with Swiss stations inside a 0.065-hour gate (worst case about 0.03 hours). That test says nothing about the Sun. The solar routine is checked separately, against 52 fixture charts between 1920 and 2066, each within 0.05°, not day by day. This example's birth (1958) and every listed date (1966 to 2051) lie inside both. In an independent Swiss check, Uranus at every listed crossing was within 1.4 arc-seconds of the target, at most about 0.9 hours of timing near the slow 2032 passes. For dates outside 1920 to 2060, take both positions from one external ephemeris, apparent geocentric Tropical longitude, one time standard. The date limits the free chart shows for Chiron and Pluto concern those bodies only.

For the general method see how to read transits without a transit tool; for house-based timing, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto transits through the houses. Ask the Astrologist can discuss your natal Sun, or Uranus dates you found yourself; it does not produce a transit calendar.
