Neptune Transits to Natal Sun: Dated Contacts and What They Leave Open
Updated October 23, 2026 · Astrologist.com Editorial
A Neptune transit to the natal Sun is a period in which moving Neptune reaches one of eight degrees measured from the Sun in your birth chart. Two different kinds of statement can be made about such a period, and this page keeps them apart.
The first kind is calculated. Given a natal Sun degree, a window of years and an ephemeris, you can list the exact dates on which Neptune crosses each target, and check them. The second kind is interpretive. Many astrologers read Neptune against the Sun as a time to reflect on ideals and direction: what you are aiming at, which aims are still yours, and where a picture of yourself may be blurrier or broader than the facts. That reading is optional. The dates do not contain it, and nothing in them shows what anyone will feel, decide or experience.
Educational guide: no transit computation happens on the site; it has neither a transit calendar nor a timing report, and the free birth chart produces the natal chart and nothing more. These dates were derived offline for a fictitious birth. For yours you need your natal Sun and a Tropical ephemeris.
Targets, branches and loops
Measured from the natal Sun, the targets sit at +0° (conjunction), +60° and +300° (the sextiles), +90° and +270° (the squares), +120° and +240° (the trines) and +180° (opposition), brought back under 360° where necessary. For every sextile, square and trine, the waxing branch is the one at most half the zodiac ahead of the Sun and the waning branch is the other; each has its own dates and counts as its own contact.
Neptune moves slowly and loops back for roughly five months of every year. In the decades used below, each backward arc was about 2.8° long and each new loop began about 2.2° further on, so neighbouring arcs overlapped by roughly 0.6°. A target inside one arc only was crossed three times; a target in the overlap of two arcs was crossed five times. That is what the scan found for these years, not a fixed rule, and several passes at one target inside one run of loops are still a single contact. Neptune's circuit of about 165 years and its roughly fourteen years per sign are orientation only; they do not tell you which targets fall in a given window.
Worked example: York, 2 September 1976, 07:40
This birth is made up. The numbers were calculated with the very code the free chart runs.
- Birth record: York, 07:40 on 2 September 1976. British Summer Time was in force from 21 March to 24 October that year, so York clocks were an hour ahead of UT and the birth fell at 06:40 UT. In UT the local day ran 23:00 on 1 September to 22:59 on 2 September, and zoneinfo shows UT+1 for all of it.
- Natal Sun: 9°55' Virgo, 159.9193° at full precision. The displayed value converts to 150 + 9 + 55/60 = 159.9167°; the two-decimal value is 159.92°.
- Natal Neptune: 11°13' Sagittarius (251.2252°), about 91° ahead of the Sun, so this chart has a natal Sun-Neptune square. That is a birth feature with no dates; see Sun square Neptune (natal).
- Code: commit
80a3c3f5. For the Sun the free chart calls astronomia's apparent solar longitude; for Neptune it calls that package's VSOP87B theory, apparent geocentric Tropical longitude referred to the ecliptic of date. - Window: birth to 00:00 UT on 31 December 2060. The end was selected for this example and stays inside the Neptune validation span (to 12:00 UT, 8 January 2061); it marks neither a weakness in the method nor anybody's lifetime.
- Steps: Neptune every six hours; crossings narrowed below thirty seconds; stations found to roughly a minute, which keeps the arithmetic tidy but is no claim about ephemeris accuracy. Around every group of passes the years on either side, as far back as 1920, were inspected in case the window had cut it short. Dates are UT.
Results for the eight targets
| Contact | Target | Result | Exact dates (UT) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Waxing square (+90°) | 9°55' Sagittarius | none found in this window | passes fell before the birth |
| Waxing trine (+120°) | 9°55' Capricorn | crossings found in this window | 10 Mar 1988, 13 May 1988, 31 Dec 1988, 17 Aug 1989, 24 Oct 1989 |
| Opposition (+180°) | 9°55' Pisces | crossings found in this window | 11 Mar 2016, 29 Sep 2016, 8 Jan 2017 |
| Waning trine (+240°) | 9°55' Taurus | crossings found in this window | 3 Jul 2042, 23 Sep 2042, 27 Apr 2043, 30 Dec 2043, 9 Feb 2044 |
| Waning square (+270°) | 9°55' Gemini | crossings found in this window | 16 Jun 2056, 20 Dec 2056, 15 Apr 2057 |
| Conjunction (+0°) and waxing sextile (+60°) | 9°55' Virgo; 9°55' Scorpio | none found in this window | Neptune was already past both at the birth |
| Waning sextile (+300°) | 9°55' Cancer | none found in this window | Neptune had not reached it by the cutoff |
Neptune stood at 11°13' Sagittarius at the birth, already past the conjunction and waxing sextile degrees, and reached only 18°52' Gemini by the cutoff, short of the waning sextile. No sequence is clipped at either end.
The waxing square shows why exact dates and comparison bands are different things. Its three exact passes came on 17 December 1974, 20 June 1975 and 19 October 1975, before the birth, and Neptune's direct station on 23 August 1976 was already 1.28° beyond the target, so there was no later pass. Yet Neptune was still within 8° of that degree at the birth and stayed inside that yardstick, on and off, until 26 September 1979. The 8° figure is borrowed from the natal calculator's fixed inclusive orbs, 8° for the conjunction, square, trine and opposition and 6° for the sextile, purely as an educational comparison. Astrologist.com uses no transit orb, and a band says nothing about how long a contact is felt. Inside a band, no exact contact.
The two five-pass contacts come from overlapping loops. For the waxing trine, Neptune turned retrograde on 11 April 1988 at 10°11' Capricorn, 0.28° beyond the target, and turned direct on 21 September 1989 at 9°36' Capricorn, 0.31° short of it, so both the 1988 and the 1989 backward arcs spanned the degree. The opposition shows the near-miss side: Neptune turned retrograde on 12 June 2015 at 339.8177°, 0.10° short of the 339.9193° target, so the 2015 loop never touched it and the count stayed at three.
Neptune to your Sun is not Neptune to Neptune
Neptune square natal Neptune measures moving Neptune against natal Neptune. This page measures it against the natal Sun. In this chart the two targets ended up close together, because the birth has a natal Sun-Neptune square, and that makes the difference easy to see:
| Measurement | Target | Exact dates (UT) |
|---|---|---|
| Neptune opposite natal Sun | 339.9193° (9°55' Pisces) | 11 Mar 2016, 29 Sep 2016, 8 Jan 2017 |
| Neptune square natal Neptune (waxing) | 341.2252° (11°13' Pisces) | 19 Apr 2016, 11 Aug 2016, 17 Feb 2017 |
Same years, a target 1.3° apart, different dates, different natal points. Neither contact implies the other. Later in the window the same thing recurs: the waning square to the Sun (2056 to 2057) overlaps Neptune's opposition to natal Neptune (27 July 2056, 2 November 2056, 24 May 2057).
Birth time and precision
On 2 September, from the day's first to last local minute, the Sun went from 9°36' to 10°34' Virgo (159.6100° to 160.5778°). The Sun has no stations, so those two minutes bracket it. With no time given the free chart would use 10°05' Virgo, the noon position, which stands in for the day; it is not a birth time, and houses and angles cannot be drawn from it.
For each Neptune station whose longitude lies in a possible target range, the stretches of birth time on either side were calculated in turn. The resulting edges are approximate, from sampling the unrounded values once a minute, and each matched the Swiss Ephemeris within half a minute:
- Waxing trine: five passes for births before about 14:29, three after.
- Opposition: five passes before about 05:09, three after.
- Waning trine: three passes before about 04:38, five from about 04:38 to about 18:43, three after.
- Waning square: three passes all day.
At the recorded 07:40 the margins are hours wide, so a few minutes' doubt would not change any count. Two separate sensitivities are involved. The Sun's own speed sets how far its natal degree moves when the birth time is uncertain, while an error in the target degree shifts a crossing according to how fast Neptune is moving at that point and how near a station it is. In this example, the rounded 159.92° moved crossings by up to about 1.4 hours and changed one date (24 to 25 October 1989), and the truncated 159.9167° moved them by up to about 5.5 hours and changed two dates (13 to 14 May 1988 and 16 to 15 June 2056). No count changed.
Ideals and direction: optional reflection
Begin with the Sun's sign and its natal aspects; bring in its house only when the time is dependable. Use these prompts or set them aside as you like.
- Conjunction. Which aims still feel like yours, and which have become a picture you keep out of habit?
- Squares. Tension between a clear plan and a wider or vaguer ideal. A practical question: what would you need to check before relying on an assumption?
- Opposition. Other people's hopes for you set against your own sense of direction; a chance to say which expectations you share.
- Trines and sextiles. Often treated as softer times for creative or reflective interests, taken at whatever speed suits you.
None of these contacts indicates confusion, deception, illness, fatigue, addiction, loss, spiritual gifts or a change of identity, and none requires anything of you. Neptune does not cause states or events. A hard contact does not show weakness and an easy one does not show insight. Other natal Sun-Neptune pages: Sun conjunct Neptune (natal). Finding your own Sun dates
- Turn the Sun position on the free birth chart into a longitude, adding the minutes as sixtieths of a degree. Keep in mind the minutes shown are truncated.
- Apply the eight offsets and bring each result under 360.
- Decide on a window. Note from a Tropical ephemeris each exact Neptune crossing of a target within it, along with any Neptune station within about a degree of one. Look beyond the start and end too; a group of passes that carries on where you cannot check should be called clipped.
- For an uncertain time, take the Sun at the start and end of the possible interval, or of the whole local day, to bound each target. Every Neptune station inside those bounds can change the count, so compute the stretch on either side and refine the birth time where they meet, as for the waning trine above (three, five, then three passes in one day).
The tests run one body at a time. Neptune is set against the Swiss Ephemeris at 12:00 UT for each day from 25 December 1919 to 8 January 2061 (51,516 dates, maximum longitude difference 4.3 arc-seconds, root mean square 1.1), and all 280 of its stations there are paired with Swiss stations, the worst within about 0.05 hours of a 0.11-hour allowance. Nothing in that test covers the Sun, which has its own check against 52 fixture charts dated 1920 to 2066, each within 0.05°. The 1976 birth and every tabled date (1974 to 2057) fall inside both. For this page a further Swiss comparison placed the natal Sun 1.2 arc-seconds away and every listed Neptune crossing within 2.3 arc-seconds of its target, with timing gaps up to about 1.1 hours near stations. Outside 1920 to 2060, rely on one outside ephemeris and one time standard for both.
