Neptune Transits to Natal Mercury: Birth Time Versus Rounding
Updated October 23, 2026 · Astrologist.com Editorial
A Neptune transit to natal Mercury is the period in which moving Neptune reaches one of eight longitudes measured from Mercury in a birth chart. Two different questions sit inside that sentence. One is arithmetic: on which dates does Neptune cross each of those longitudes, and how sure can you be of the natal degree you started from? The other is interpretive, and optional: many astrologers read Neptune against Mercury as a time to notice how you use imagination in thinking, speaking and writing.
This page is mainly about the first question, and about one detail of it that is easy to miss. Two separate things can move a natal Mercury degree: doubt about the birth time, and the rounding of the degree you read off a chart. Which of them matters more depends on how fast Mercury happened to be moving on the birth date. The worked example below uses a day on which Mercury stood almost still.
Educational guide: Astrologist.com has no transit calculator, transit calendar or timing report, and the free birth chart computes the natal chart only. The figures below were produced offline for an invented birth. For your own dates you need your natal Mercury and a Tropical ephemeris.
Eight targets, two branches
The targets are natal Mercury plus 0° (conjunction), 60° and 300° (the sextiles), 90° and 270° (the squares), 120° and 240° (the trines) and 180° (opposition), each reduced below 360°. For a sextile, square or trine, the waxing branch lies at most half the zodiac ahead of Mercury and the waning branch lies further round. The branches are separate contacts with separate dates.
Neptune needs roughly 165 years for one circuit and spends around fourteen years in a sign. Those figures only give a sense of scale. Which targets fall inside a chosen window, and how many times each is crossed, came from a dated scan of Neptune's path, not from the orbital period.
Worked example: Cardiff, 25 May 1983, 14:10
The person is invented; the arithmetic is the code the free chart runs.
- Birth record: Cardiff, 14:10 on 25 May 1983. British Summer Time ran from 27 March to 23 October 1983, so clocks were one hour ahead of UT and the birth fell at 13:10 UT. The local date ran from 23:00 UT on 24 May to 22:59 UT on 25 May; zoneinfo gives UT+1 for every minute of it.
- Natal Mercury: 16°25' Taurus, 46.41887° unrounded. The two-decimal value is 46.42° and the displayed degree and minute convert to 46 + 25/60 = 46.41667°.
- A station on the birth date: Mercury turned direct at about 12:48 UT (13:48 local) at 46.41886°. The chart marks Mercury retrograde for a birth at 13:47 and direct for one at 13:49. At 14:10 it was moving forward at only 0.0011° a day.
- Natal Neptune: 28°30' Sagittarius (268.5095°), about 138° from Mercury, so the chart has no major Mercury-Neptune aspect.
- Code: repository commit
0cca75ca. Mercury and Neptune both come from astronomia's VSOP87B planetary theory through the chart's planetary path, giving apparent geocentric Tropical longitude on the ecliptic of date. - Window: from the birth to 00:00 UT on 31 December 2060. That cutoff was chosen for this example. It lies inside the Mercury and Neptune validation span, which ends at 12:00 UT on 8 January 2061, and it says nothing about anybody's lifespan.
- Method: Neptune sampled every six hours, crossings narrowed to under thirty seconds and stations to about a minute. That resolution is bookkeeping, not a statement of accuracy. Around every group of passes, the years back to 1920 were scanned so that a group cut by the window could be labelled. Dates are UT.
Results for the eight targets
| Contact | Target | Result | Exact dates (UT) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Waning trine (+240°) | 16°25' Capricorn | crossings found in this window | 14 Mar 1991, 25 May 1991, 6 Jan 1992, 28 Aug 1992, 27 Oct 1992 |
| Waning square (+270°) | 16°25' Aquarius | crossings found in this window | 13 Mar 2005, 31 Jul 2005, 13 Jan 2006 |
| Waning sextile (+300°) | 16°25' Pisces | crossings found in this window | 2 Jun 2018, 5 Jul 2018, 13 Mar 2019, 15 Oct 2019, 8 Jan 2020 |
| Conjunction (+0°) | 16°25' Taurus | crossings found in this window | 29 Jun 2045, 11 Oct 2045, 27 Apr 2046 |
| Waxing square (+90°), waxing trine (+120°), opposition (+180°) | 16°25' Leo, Virgo and Scorpio | none found in this window | Neptune had passed them before the birth |
| Waxing sextile (+60°) | 16°25' Cancer | none found in this window | Neptune got no further than 20°50' Gemini (its September 2060 station) before the cutoff |
No sequence is clipped at either end of the window.
Three or five passes depend on where a target sits among Neptune's yearly loops. For the waning sextile, Neptune turned retrograde on 18 June 2018 at 16°29' Pisces (346.4929°), only 0.074° beyond the 346.4189° target, so the first two crossings came 33 days apart on either side of that station. It turned direct on 27 November 2019 at 345.9265°, 0.49° short, so the 2019 loop crossed the target as well: five passes, one contact. For the waning square only the 2005 loop spanned the target. The 2004 loop turned back 1.03° short of it, and the 2006 loop turned direct 0.61° beyond it, so there were three passes.
A natal degree that hardly moved
Here is the unusual part. Mercury's speed on 25 May 1983, measured the same way the chart measures it:
| Local time | Mercury | Speed |
|---|---|---|
| 00:00 | 46.4312° | 0.043° a day backward |
| 13:48 | 46.4189° (lowest of the day) | turning direct |
| 14:10 | 46.4189° | 0.0011° a day forward |
| 23:59 | 46.4256° | 0.032° a day forward |
Across the whole local date Mercury stayed between 46.4189° and 46.4312°, a range of 0.0124°. The lowest value came inside the day, at the station, so the first and last minutes do not bound the range here: on a station day the extreme can sit anywhere in between. That is why the scan took Mercury at every minute of the date.
What does birth-time doubt do on such a day? Between 13:40 and 14:40, Mercury's longitude changed by no more than 0.00004°, and no crossing in the table moved by more than about seven minutes. Even the full day's range moved crossings by up to about 35 hours (for the June and July 2018 pair beside a Neptune station) and changed several dates. It left every count unchanged, because no Neptune station falls inside any of the four possible target ranges.
What rounding does
Now compare the two common ways of writing the natal degree.
- Two decimals, 46.42°: 0.0011° above the unrounded value. Mercury stood there twice that day, at about 09:38 on its way back and about 18:00 after turning, but not at 14:10. Crossings moved by up to 3.1 hours, and no date changed.
- Degree and minute, 16°25' read as 46.41667°: 0.0022° below the unrounded value, and below the lowest point Mercury reached at any minute of that day. Crossings moved by up to 6.0 hours, and one date changed: the last waning-trine pass moved from 27 to 26 October 1992 (22:36 UT).
So in this chart a rounding choice moves the dates further than an hour of birth-time doubt does. The two sensitivities have different causes. Birth-time doubt moves the natal degree at whatever speed Mercury had at that moment, and here that speed was close to zero. An error in the target degree moves a crossing according to how fast Neptune is travelling at that point, and Neptune barely creeps near its own stations: about 0.0022° cost six hours beside the June 2018 station. On a day when Mercury moves a degree and a half, the balance reverses; for that case see Uranus transits to natal Mercury.
Imagination and communication: optional reflection
Start with Mercury's sign and natal aspects, and bring in its house only if the birth time is reliable. Take these prompts or leave them.
- Conjunction. Which images, phrases or stories keep returning when you write or talk, and do you want to give them more room?
- Squares. A gap between a precise plan and a looser picture. Where would checking one detail or asking one clarifying question help?
- Trines and sextiles. Often read as easier times for music, poetry, translation or open-ended brainstorming, at whatever pace suits you.
None of these contacts says anything about honesty, memory, intelligence, learning ability or mental health, and none requires you to do anything. Neptune does not cause states of mind or events. Natal Mercury-Neptune aspects are a different, lifelong topic: see Mercury square Neptune (natal) and Mercury trine Neptune (natal). A natal Mercury that turned direct on the birth date is discussed in stationary planets at birth and Mercury retrograde in the natal chart.
Finding your own Mercury dates
- Turn the Mercury shown on the free birth chart into a longitude, adding the minutes as sixtieths of a degree, and remember the minutes are truncated.
- Check whether Mercury stationed during your possible birth interval. If it did, take its lowest and highest values over the whole interval, not only the values at the first and last minute.
- Apply the eight offsets, choose a window and note every exact Neptune crossing of each target from a Tropical ephemeris, plus any Neptune station whose longitude falls inside a possible target range. Each such station can change a count, so work out the stretch of birth time on each side of it.
- Look past both ends of the window, so that a group of passes that continues out of view can be called clipped.
The repository's tests check one body at a time. Neptune is compared with the Swiss Ephemeris at 12:00 UT on every day from 25 December 1919 to 8 January 2061 (51,516 dates; largest difference 4.27 arc-seconds, root mean square 1.09), and all 280 of its stations there pair with Swiss stations, the worst 0.054 hours apart against a 0.11-hour allowance. Mercury has its own daily check over the same span (largest difference 3.50 arc-seconds, all 888 stations paired). For this page a separate Swiss Ephemeris comparison put natal Mercury 0.1 arc-seconds away and the Mercury station within about five seconds of time, found the same dates and counts for every contact in the table, and placed every listed crossing within 2.1 arc-seconds of its target, with timing gaps up to about one hour beside stations. Outside 1920 to 2060, take both bodies from one outside ephemeris on one time scale.
The general procedure is in how to read transits without a transit tool. Ask the Astrologist can discuss your natal Mercury, or Neptune dates you found yourself; it does not calculate transit dates.
