Uranus Transits to Natal Mercury: When Minutes of Birth Time Matter
Updated October 23, 2026 · Astrologist.com Editorial
A Uranus transit to natal Mercury is a dated period during which the planet Uranus, as it travels, arrives at one of eight points defined by where Mercury stood when you were born: the conjunction, the opposition, and a waxing and a waning branch each of the sextile, square and trine. Only Uranus is in motion here. Natal Mercury stays put; it is a single longitude, calculated one time for the birth moment.
That one longitude is where this page starts. When Mercury is moving quickly, as in the example below, it can cover more than a degree and a half in a day, and its natal degree then depends on the birth time more than the Sun's or Venus's does; near one of its stations it barely moves. Uranus's slow yearly loops are sensitive to small differences in the target. The worked example below shows a single birth record in which a difference of about forty minutes in the recorded time changes how many times Uranus crosses one target.
In interpretation, Uranus contacts to Mercury are usually read as a prompt to look at how you think, learn and exchange information: which habits of attention still serve you, which ways of explaining things have gone stale, and where a different method might be worth a try. That is a reflective reading. A transit does not decide what you think, say or learn.
Educational guide: the site offers no transit calculator, no transit calendar and no return chart, and the free birth chart stops at the natal chart. The dates on this page were produced offline in a single run for a made-up birth. Dating your own contacts takes your natal Mercury plus a Tropical ephemeris.
Three things that share a name
Three ideas are easy to mix up here, and they are separate measurements:
- A Uranus transit to natal Mercury (this page): the moving Uranus of a given year against your fixed natal Mercury degree. It has dates.
- A natal Mercury-Uranus aspect: the angle between Mercury and Uranus at the moment of birth, a permanent chart feature with no dates attached. See Mercury conjunct Uranus (natal) and Mercury square Uranus (natal).
- Mercury retrograde: moving Mercury appearing to back up for about three weeks, several times a year. It concerns where Mercury travels after birth, not the natal degree. A natal Mercury that was retrograde at birth is described in Mercury retrograde in the natal chart; in this example natal Mercury was moving direct.
The eight targets
The targets are natal Mercury's longitude plus each of 0°, 60°, 90°, 120°, 180°, 240°, 270° and 300°, minus 360° whenever the total goes past it. A waxing contact sits no more than 180° ahead of Mercury in zodiac order, a waning one further round, so every sextile, square and trine comes in two branches, usually years apart, and each branch is counted on its own.
For roughly five months a year Uranus appears to move backward. If a target lies within one of those backward arcs, Uranus passes it going forward, then going back, then forward once more; if it lies in the gap between two arcs, Uranus passes it a single time. Repeated exact dates at the same target within one run of loops are passes belonging to one contact. Uranus takes about 84 years to go round the zodiac, a number that gives scale but says nothing about which targets a particular window contains.
Worked example: Bristol, 26 November 1987, 09:35
Nobody real is behind this chart. Each value below was computed with the code that draws the free chart, run offline for this page.
- Birth record: Bristol, 09:35 on 26 November 1987. Britain had come off summer time on 25 October 1987 and was on Greenwich Mean Time, so 09:35 on the clock was 09:35 UT, and the Bristol calendar day matched the UT day. Checked against Python's zoneinfo data, the offset is the same at every minute of that day.
- Natal Mercury: 18°57' Scorpio on the chart. Scorpio starts at 210°, so the displayed degree and minute give 210 + 18 + 57/60 = 228.95°. The model's full value is 228.9643°, which rounds to 228.96° at two decimals. Mercury was moving direct at about 1.52° a day, roughly 3.8 arc-minutes per hour of clock time.
- Natal Uranus: 25°31' Sagittarius, some 37° ahead of Mercury. That is none of the major aspects, so no natal Mercury-Uranus aspect gets mixed into the example.
- Source code: commit
80a3c3f5of the repository. Both planets are computed by the astronomia package's VSOP87B theory, which is what the free chart calls for planets, as apparent geocentric Tropical longitudes measured on the ecliptic of date. - Window: from the birth up to 00:00 UT, 31 December 2060. That end date was picked for this page and falls within the span over which the repository validates Mercury and Uranus (through 12:00 UT, 8 January 2061). It is a selection made for the example, not a place where the calculation fails, and it is a span of dates, not a comment on anyone's lifespan.
- Method: Uranus's longitude every six hours, with each crossing narrowed by bisection below thirty seconds and each station placed to roughly a minute. That is numerical housekeeping, not a claim about how accurate the ephemeris is. For every group of passes the surrounding years, as far back as 1920, were also examined so that a group cut by the window would be noticed. Dates given are UT days.

No sequence is clipped at either end. The conjunction needs a word: Uranus came within 8° of natal Mercury on 10 December 2060 and was still about 7.0° short of it at the cutoff. Being inside a comparison band is not an exact crossing, and nothing is claimed here about what Uranus does after the window. The 8° figure is borrowed from the natal calculator's fixed inclusive orbs, 8° for the conjunction, square, trine and opposition and 6° for the sextile, purely as an educational comparison. Astrologist.com uses no transit orb, and a band says nothing about how long a contact is felt.
Uranus's own cycle runs on a different clock. Measured from natal Uranus, a different natal point, the same window holds Uranus square natal Uranus in 2009 to 2010 and 2050 to 2051 and Uranus opposite natal Uranus in 2031 to 2032; see Uranus square Uranus. None of those is a Mercury contact.
The opposition: one crossing, and a margin of 41 minutes
The opposition degree is 48.9643° (18°57' Taurus). Around it Uranus did this:
- It turned retrograde on 24 August 2022 at 48.9206°, 0.0437° short of the target, so the 2022 loop never reached it.
- It crossed the target once, moving direct, on 10 May 2023.
- Its next direct station, 27 January 2024 at 49.0882°, was 0.1239° beyond the target, so it did not come back over it.
A single crossing is a complete result, not a weaker one. What makes it fragile is the size of the first margin. 0.0437° is about 41 minutes of natal Mercury's motion. A birth about 41 minutes earlier puts the target below the 2022 station longitude, inside the 2022 backward arc, and the count becomes three: for 08:50 the exact dates are 21 August 2022, 27 August 2022 and 9 May 2023, two of them only six days apart around the station.
In this model the edge falls at about 08:54 local time; in the Swiss Ephemeris comparison, about a quarter of a minute later. Births from about 08:54 to about 11:33 give one opposition pass; births after about 11:33 cross the 2024 station longitude and give three passes again (2023 to 2024).
The rest of the birth date
From the first to the last minute of 26 November, Mercury moved from 18°21' to 19°52' Scorpio (228.3585° to 229.8773°). With no Mercury station that day, those two minutes mark its lowest and highest values. If no time were entered, the free chart would fall back on noon, 19°07' Scorpio: a computational placeholder, not a birth time, and no houses or angles can be taken from it.
Within that span, every Uranus station lying inside a possible target range was found, and the birth times between those stations were worked through stretch by stretch. The edges here are approximate, taken from minute-by-minute sampling of the unrounded values, and none differs from the Swiss comparison by more than about 20 seconds:
- Opposition: three passes before about 08:54, one from about 08:54 to about 11:33, three after.
- Waxing trine: three passes, except one pass between about 05:18 and 06:01, where the target sits in the gap between the 2007 retrograde station and the 2008 direct station.
- Waning trine: three passes before about 19:53, one after.
- Waxing sextile, both squares and the waning sextile: three passes at every minute of the date. The conjunction: none found in this window at any minute.
Suppose the 09:35 was copied from a family memory and could be half an hour out. From 09:05 to 10:05 every count stays the same and the opposition stays at one pass (9 or 10 May 2023). Allow 45 minutes and the interval reaches back past 08:54, so the opposition count is no longer settled by the record. The edges above are approximate; a time that close to one needs a finer calculation with confirmed conventions, not a guess.
Three versions of 18°57' Scorpio
| Natal value used | Difference from full value | Effect |
|---|---|---|
| 228.9643° (full) | none | dates as tabled |
| 228.96° (rounded to 0.01°) | 0.0043° | crossings moved by up to about 5.5 hours; one date changed (14 to 15 August 1993) |
| 228.95° (minutes truncated) | 0.0143° | crossings moved by up to about 18 hours; four dates changed: 14 to 15 August 1993, 4 to 5 November 2008, 20 to 19 December 2008, 27 to 26 June 2037 |
No count changed with either value. For comparison, 0.0143° is about 14 minutes of Mercury's motion on that day. The largest shifts come from crossings close to a Uranus station, where Uranus is barely moving.
Thinking, learning and exchange: reflective prompts
Combine these with Mercury's sign and natal aspects; use its house only when the time is trustworthy. They are optional questions to consider, never forecasts and never an assessment of anyone's intelligence.
- Conjunction. Which ways of thinking are yours by choice and which are routine? A time some people use to try a new tool or method.
- Squares. Friction between a familiar way of explaining things and a wish for a different approach. A useful question is what you would change if no one were watching.
- Opposition. Other people's ideas set against your own; a prompt to listen and to say clearly what you think.
- Trines and sextiles. Frequently treated as smoother moments to pick up a new subject or way of studying, at whatever pace suits you.
No contact here points to an accident, a nervous disorder, a diagnosis, a flash of insight, a job change, an argument or any obligation. Uranus is not the cause of anyone's thoughts or circumstances, and a hard aspect no more marks a scattered mind than a soft one marks a sharp one. For a slower and a faster planet against the same natal point, see Saturn transits to natal Mercury and Jupiter transits to natal Mercury.
Checking your own Mercury
- Note the Mercury position on the free birth chart and turn it into a longitude counted from 0° Aries: the start of its sign, plus whole degrees, plus minutes divided by 60. Displayed minutes are cut off rather than rounded, so this can be up to one arc-minute too low.
- Get the eight targets by adding each offset, taking away 360 whenever a sum passes it.
- Fix your window and note it. From a Tropical ephemeris, collect every date on which Uranus is exactly on a target within the window, and mark every Uranus station close to a target. Look a little past each end of the window too; a run of passes that carries on beyond an end you cannot see should be labelled clipped.
- Find Mercury at both ends of any interval you have been given for the birth time and at the first and last minute of the local day, applying the clock rules of that date, plus any Mercury station that falls in between. Those bounds tell you where each target can be; they do not tell you how many passes it gets. Every Uranus station whose longitude falls inside one of those bounds marks a possible change in the count, so work out each stretch on its own and pin down the birth time at each change, the way the opposition edge was found above.
Validation is checked body by body. In the repository's tests Uranus and, in a separate test, Mercury are each compared with the Swiss Ephemeris once a day at 12:00 UT from 25 December 1919 through 8 January 2061, 51,516 comparisons apiece, and each station is matched to a Swiss station: Uranus's 278 (largest longitude difference 3.8 arc-seconds) and Mercury's 888 (3.5 arc-seconds). A pass for one planet says nothing about the other. Everything in this example, from the 1987 birth to the 2050 sextile, falls within that span. A separate spot check put natal Mercury well under a tenth of an arc-second from Swiss, and every listed Uranus crossing within 1.4 arc-seconds of its target and at most about 0.3 hours from the Swiss time. For anything before 1920 or after 2060, take both planets from a single outside ephemeris, as apparent geocentric Tropical longitudes on one time scale. The free chart's date limits for Chiron and Pluto concern only those two bodies.
For the step-by-step approach, read how to read transits without a transit tool. Ask the Astrologist will talk through natal Mercury, or Uranus dates you have found elsewhere, but produces no transit dates itself.
