Pluto Transits to Natal Mars: Five Passes Inside a Ten-Year Band

← Back to Transits

A Pluto transit to natal Mars is the period in which moving Pluto comes to one of eight longitudes measured from Mars in a birth chart. Three different things get counted under that heading, and with a planet as slow as Pluto they can differ enormously:

  • Exact crossings: the instants Pluto stands precisely on the target degree. They can be dated and checked.
  • Passes of one contact: Pluto loops back for five to six months each year, so a target can be crossed several times in one run of loops. Those crossings are passes of a single contact.
  • Comparison-band stretches: periods when Pluto is within a chosen number of degrees of the target. Pluto can enter and leave such a band several times, and a single stretch can last a decade. A band is a yardstick for comparison, not a measure of how long anything lasts or how strongly anything is felt.

One invented chart below shows all three.

On the interpretive side, many astrologers read Pluto against Mars as a time to look at how you direct effort: what you are working toward and whether the way you pursue it still suits you. "Transformation" is often used for this theme. It is an interpretation, not a forecast, and nothing here describes anyone's temper, strength, health or results.

Educational guide: Astrologist.com has no transit calculator, transit calendar or return chart, and the free birth chart shows natal positions only. The results below come from one offline run for an invented person. Your own contacts begin with your natal Mars and a Tropical ephemeris.

Targets and branches

The eight targets are natal Mars shifted by 0°, 60°, 90°, 120°, 180°, 240°, 270° and 300°, reduced below 360°. A waxing branch lies at most 180° ahead of Mars in zodiac order and a waning branch further round; the two squares, for instance, are two contacts. Pluto's 248-year circuit gives a sense of scale only. The window and a dated scan of Pluto's path decide which targets appear.

Worked example: Nottingham, 14 February 1981, 16:35

An invented birth, calculated offline with the free chart's code.

  • Birth record: 16:35 in Nottingham on 14 February 1981. Britain was on Greenwich Mean Time, so the birth was at 16:35 UT and the local date matched the UT date; zoneinfo shows UT+0 for the whole day.
  • Natal Mars: 6°07' Pisces, 336.11935° unrounded, moving forward at about 0.79° a day.
  • Natal Pluto: 24°14' Libra (204.2384°), retrograde, about 132° from Mars. That is not one of the chart's major aspects; the nearest, the trine, is almost 12° away, outside the natal 8° orb.
  • Code: commit 0cca75ca. Mars uses astronomia's VSOP87B planetary theory through the chart's planetary path. Pluto uses the chart's separate Meeus chapter 37 routine, precessed to the date, reduced to the Earth with light-time and then given the planets' apparent-place corrections.
  • Window: from the birth to 00:00 UT on 31 December 2060. That cutoff was picked for this example and lies inside the 1920 to 2060 range where the Mars and Pluto checks overlap. It is not a limit of the technique and not a statement about anyone's lifespan.
  • Method: Pluto sampled every six hours, crossings and band edges narrowed to under thirty seconds, stations to about a minute. That is bookkeeping, not an accuracy claim. The years around each group of passes, back to 1920, were scanned so that a group cut by the window could be called clipped. Dates are UT.

Exact crossings and passes

Contact Target Result Exact dates (UT)
Waning trine (+240°) 6°07' Scorpio crossings found in this window 4 Dec 1985, 21 Apr 1986, 1 Oct 1986
Waning square (+270°) 6°07' Sagittarius crossings found in this window 14 Dec 1997, 18 Jun 1998, 10 Oct 1998
Waning sextile (+300°) 6°07' Capricorn crossings found in this window 23 Jan 2011, 1 Jul 2011, 27 Nov 2011
Conjunction (+0°) 6°07' Pisces crossings found in this window 10 Apr 2047, 5 Aug 2047, 19 Feb 2048, 13 Oct 2048, 23 Dec 2048
Waxing trine (+120°), opposition (+180°) 6°07' Cancer and Virgo none found in this window Pluto had passed both before the birth
Waxing sextile (+60°), waxing square (+90°) 6°07' Taurus and Gemini none found in this window Pluto got no further than 23°03' Pisces (its June 2060 station) before the cutoff

Four contacts, fourteen exact crossings, no clipped sequence.

Why five passes for the conjunction and three for the others? It depends on where each target sat among Pluto's loops:

  • Conjunction: two backward arcs spanned 336.1194°. The 2047 loop turned retrograde on 6 June 2047 at 336.7655° (0.65° beyond the target) and direct on 17 November 2047 at 334.5258°; the 2048 loop turned retrograde on 7 June 2048 at 338.0885° and direct on 18 November 2048 at 335.8553°, 0.26° short of the target. The 2046 loop turned back 0.69° short and the 2049 loop turned direct 1.05° beyond, so neither added a pass. Forward, back, forward, back, forward: five passes, one contact.
  • Waning square: only the 1998 arc spanned 246.1194°. The 1997 loop turned back on 8 March 1997 at 245.6026°, 0.52° short, and the 1998 loop turned direct 0.82° short of it, so there were three passes.

The final conjunction pass, at about 23:56 UT on 23 December 2048, sits four minutes before midnight. The Swiss Ephemeris comparison puts it about 35 minutes later, just after midnight on 24 December, and the two-decimal Mars value does the same. Neither changes the count.

Comparison-band stretches

The band used here is 8° either side of the conjunction degree. It is borrowed from the natal calculator's fixed inclusive orbs, 8° for the conjunction, square, trine and opposition and 6° for the sextile, with no bonus for any planet, purely as an educational comparison. Astrologist.com uses no transit orb, and nothing about the band says how long a contact is felt.

For the conjunction, Pluto was within 8° of 336.1194° during five separate stretches:

Stretch From (UT) To (UT)
1 14 Apr 2041 (enters) 14 Jul 2041 (exits)
2 18 Feb 2042 (re-enters) 23 Sep 2042 (exits)
3 26 Dec 2042 (re-enters) 30 Apr 2053 (exits)
4 29 Jul 2053 (re-enters) 8 Mar 2054 (exits)
5 3 Oct 2054 (re-enters) 18 Jan 2055 (final exit)

The third stretch alone lasts more than ten years, and all five exact crossings fall inside it. So one chart gives three very different answers to "how long": five instants; one contact from April 2047 to December 2048; and a band that, by this yardstick, is occupied on and off from 2041 to 2055. The first and last two stretches come from Pluto's loops carrying it back and forth across the band's edges, not from anything new happening at the target. The Swiss comparison gave the same ten edge dates, each within about 45 minutes.

Birth time and precision

On 14 February 1981 Mars moved from 5°34' to 6°21' Pisces (335.5735° to 336.3629°) between the first and last local minute, and it did not station that day. Two Pluto stations lie inside the possible target ranges, so two counts change during the day. By the site's routines:

  • Conjunction: three passes for births before about 08:34, five after. The edge is the 18 November 2048 station at 335.8553°.
  • Waning square: five passes before about 00:53, three after. The edge is the 8 March 1997 station.
  • Waning trine and waning sextile: three passes all day.

The recorded 16:35 is about eight hours after the nearer edge. The Swiss comparison puts the conjunction edge less than a minute earlier and the square edge within a second.

Rounding barely matters here. The two-decimal 336.12° moved crossings by up to about an hour; the truncated 6°07' (336.1167°) moved them by up to about five hours and changed two dates (1 October 1986 to 30 September, and 27 November 2011 to 26 November). No count changed.

Effort and direction: optional reflection

Start from Mars's sign and natal aspects; bring in its house only with a reliable birth time. Use the prompts below or skip them.

  • Conjunction. What are you putting effort into, and does the way you go about it still feel like your own choice?
  • Squares. Friction between how you like to act and what a situation asks. What would you try differently?
  • Trines and sextiles. Often read as workable times to change how you train, work or pursue a goal, at your own pace.

None of these contacts predicts conflict, violence, injury, illness, loss of control, success or failure, and none requires anything of you. Pluto does not cause events, and a hard contact is no sign of trouble. Natal Mars-Pluto aspects are a separate, lifelong topic: Mars conjunct Pluto (natal) and Mars square Pluto (natal).

Counting your own Mars contacts

  1. Convert Mars from the free birth chart into a longitude, minutes as sixtieths of a degree; the minutes shown are truncated.
  2. Apply the eight offsets, reduce below 360 and choose a window.
  3. From a Tropical ephemeris, list every exact Pluto crossing of each target, and group the crossings into contacts by run of loops. If you want a comparison band, choose it before looking at the dates, say where it comes from and list its entries and exits separately.
  4. With an uncertain birth time, the endpoints alone may not give Mars's lowest and highest longitude. If Mars stood still and reversed somewhere between the earliest and latest possible minute, that turning point is also an extreme, so include it with the first and last values when you set the limits for each target. Every Pluto station lying within those limits then needs checking, along with the stretch of birth time before and after it.

The repository tests each body on its own. Pluto is compared with the Swiss Ephemeris at 12:00 UT daily from 25 December 1919 to 8 January 2061 (51,516 days, largest difference 1.78 arc-seconds) and all 281 stations are paired within half an hour, the worst 0.28 hours apart. Mars has its own daily check over the same span (largest difference 2.22 arc-seconds, 132 stations paired). Those limits are test allowances, and the station-time limit says nothing directly about when Pluto crosses a target. Every crossing above was also checked against the Swiss Ephemeris, within 1.3 arc-seconds of its target and 0.7 hours in time. Outside 1920 to 2060, take both bodies from one outside ephemeris on one time scale.
