Pluto Transits to Natal Venus: When the Last Arcminute Counts

← Back to Transits

A Pluto transit to natal Venus is the period in which moving Pluto reaches one of eight longitudes measured from Venus in a birth chart. The dates can be calculated and checked. What they mean is a separate, optional matter: many astrologers read Pluto against Venus as a time to reflect on what you value and on the kind of closeness that feels right to you. "Transformation" is the usual word for the theme, and here it stays a theme, not an outcome.

This page has one practical point to make. A natal Venus written as degree and minute, such as 8°28' Pisces, is not the full value, and the difference is usually harmless. Next to a slow Pluto station it is not: in the example below, the truncated minute removes two passes of a contact that the full value includes.

Educational guide: there is no transit calculator, transit calendar or timing report on Astrologist.com, and the free birth chart computes natal positions only. The results below come from one offline run for an invented person. Your own dates need your natal Venus and a Tropical ephemeris.

Eight targets and their branches

Natal Venus plus 0°, 60°, 90°, 120°, 180°, 240°, 270° and 300°, reduced below 360°, gives the conjunction, the two sextiles, the two squares, the two trines and the opposition. A waxing branch is at most 180° ahead of Venus in zodiac order, a waning branch further round, and the two are separate contacts.

Pluto takes about 248 years to go round the zodiac and its speed through the signs is very uneven, so "years per sign" is a poor guide. Which targets fall inside a window, and how often each is crossed, came from a dated scan of Pluto's path.

Worked example: Leiden, 21 March 1984, 10:30

Invented birth; positions from the free chart's own code.

  • Birth record: Leiden, 10:30 on 21 March 1984. Dutch summer time did not start until 25 March 1984, so the clocks showed Central European Time, one hour ahead of UT, and the birth fell at 09:30 UT. The local date ran from 23:00 UT on 20 March to 22:59 UT on 21 March, UT+1 throughout according to zoneinfo.
  • Natal Venus: 8°28' Pisces, 338.47843° unrounded, moving forward at about 1.234° a day.
  • Natal Pluto: 1°33' Scorpio (211.5530°), retrograde. Venus is about 126.9° from Pluto, which the natal calculator's fixed 8° orb counts as a trine; see Venus trine Pluto (natal). That aspect is part of the birth chart and has no dates.
  • Code: commit 0cca75ca. Venus comes from astronomia's VSOP87B theory through the chart's planetary path. Pluto comes from the chart's Meeus chapter 37 routine (precessed to the date, reduced to the Earth with light-time, then given the planets' apparent-place corrections); it is not a VSOP series.
  • Window: the birth to 00:00 UT on 31 December 2060, a cutoff chosen for this example and inside the 1920 to 2060 range covered by both the Venus and the Pluto checks. It is not a limit of the method or a comment on anybody's lifespan.
  • Method: Pluto every six hours; crossings narrowed to under thirty seconds and stations to about a minute, as bookkeeping rather than an accuracy claim. Each group of passes was scanned on both sides, back to 1920, to rule out clipping. Dates are UT.

Results for the eight targets

Contact Target Result Exact dates (UT)
Waning trine (+240°) 8°28' Scorpio crossings found in this window 30 Nov 1986, 3 May 1987, 26 Sep 1987
Waning square (+270°) 8°28' Sagittarius crossings found in this window 14 Dec 1998, 24 Jun 1999, 10 Oct 1999
Waning sextile (+300°) 8°28' Capricorn crossings found in this window 4 Feb 2012, 21 Jun 2012, 7 Dec 2012
Conjunction (+0°) 8°28' Pisces crossings found in this window 31 Mar 2049, 21 Aug 2049, 11 Feb 2050, 15 Nov 2050, 27 Nov 2050
Waxing trine (+120°), opposition (+180°) 8°28' Cancer and Virgo none found in this window Pluto had passed both before the birth
Waxing sextile (+60°), waxing square (+90°) 8°28' Taurus and Gemini none found in this window Pluto got no further than 23°03' Pisces (its June 2060 station) before the cutoff

No sequence is clipped. The last two conjunction passes, twelve days apart, are the subject of the next section.

Three versions of one degree

The same natal Venus can be written three ways:

Version Value Difference from the full value
Unrounded, as computed 338.47843° none
Two decimals 338.48° 0.00157° higher
Degree and minute, 8°28' Pisces 338 + 28/60 = 338.46667° 0.01176° lower (the minutes shown are truncated)

Pluto turned direct on 21 November 2050 at 22:12 UT at 338.47099°. The unrounded target lies 0.00745° (about 27 arc-seconds) beyond that turning point, so Pluto's 2050 backward arc reaches it: Pluto crosses it going backward on 15 November and forward again on 27 November. The truncated 338.46667° lies 0.00432° short of the turning point, so the 2050 arc never reaches it. Read that way, the contact has three passes (30 March 2049, 22 August 2049 and 11 February 2050) instead of five. The two-decimal value keeps all five passes and moves the last one by about 14 hours, to 28 November 2050.

In clock terms, 0.00745° is about 8.7 minutes of Venus's motion that morning. By the site's routines, a birth before about 10:21 local would give three passes and a birth after it five. The recorded 10:30 is about nine minutes clear. The whole truncation error, 0.01176°, is worth about 13.7 minutes of Venus. The same day has another edge earlier on: before about 02:55 the 2048 loop reaches the target instead, and the count is five again. So across the birth date the conjunction runs five, three, five.

The other contacts move less. The waning square has five passes for births before about 02:26 and three after; the waning sextile three before about 20:27 and five after; the waning trine three all day. Elsewhere, the truncated value shifted crossings by up to about 12 hours and the two-decimal value by about an hour and a half, without changing a count.

An independent Swiss Ephemeris comparison agrees on the point that matters. It puts natal Venus within 0.1 arc-seconds of the site's value and the November 2050 station 1.3 arc-seconds lower, far less than the 27 arc-second margin. It finds the same five conjunction dates, with the November 2050 pair about three and a half hours earlier and later respectively, and it moves the 10:21 edge by less than half a minute. A margin of 27 arc-seconds is still small. Had it been one or two arc-seconds, the two ephemerides could have disagreed about the count, and the honest answer would have been to give both.

Values and closeness: optional reflection

Start from Venus's sign and natal aspects; use its house only if the birth time is reliable. Use these prompts or leave them.

  • Conjunction. Which things you value still feel like your own choices, and which have you kept out of habit?
  • Squares. A pull between how you like to spend time with people and how your circumstances run. What would you adjust if you could adjust one thing?
  • Trines and sextiles. Often read as easier times for creative work, friendships or deliberate changes in taste, at your own pace.

None of these contacts says anything about a partner, a betrayal, a soulmate, money, a breakup or a wedding, and none predicts how any relationship turns out. Pluto does not cause events, and a hard contact is no sign that anything is wrong. Other natal Venus-Pluto aspects: Venus conjunct Pluto (natal) and Venus square Pluto (natal).

Finding your own Venus dates

  1. Convert the Venus shown on the free birth chart into a longitude, adding the minutes as sixtieths, and remember they are truncated. If any result below sits close to a Pluto station, redo it with a more precise natal value.
  2. Apply the eight offsets and reduce below 360.
  3. Choose a window and note from a Tropical ephemeris every exact Pluto crossing of each target and every Pluto station whose longitude lies inside a possible target range. Look past the window's ends so that a cut group is called clipped.
  4. If the birth time is uncertain, find the whole range natal Venus covered during the possible interval. Take Venus at the start and end of the interval, and also check whether Venus turned retrograde or direct inside it: an interior station is an extreme of its own and can carry Venus beyond both end values, so it belongs in the range. Then inspect every Pluto station that falls inside each resulting target range and calculate the stretch of birth time on each side of it, as with the five, three, five conjunction above.

The repository checks each body separately. Pluto is compared with the Swiss Ephemeris at 12:00 UT daily from 25 December 1919 to 8 January 2061 (51,516 days, largest difference 1.78 arc-seconds, root mean square 0.58), with all 281 stations paired within the 0.5-hour allowance, the worst 0.28 hours apart; a wider 1885 to 2099 scan checks longitudes and retrograde flags without pairing stations. Venus has its own daily check over the narrower span (largest difference 2.15 arc-seconds, 176 stations paired). Those allowances are test limits, not the error at any date above. Outside 1920 to 2060, take both bodies from one outside ephemeris on one time scale.

For the general method see how to read transits without a transit tool. Ask the Astrologist can discuss your natal Venus, or Pluto dates you looked up yourself; it does not calculate transit dates.
