Chiron Square Chiron: Why the Two Squares Come at Such Different Ages

← Back to Transits

Chiron square Chiron is the transit in which moving Chiron stands 90° from the degree natal Chiron held at your birth. It happens twice in each Chiron cycle of about fifty years. The waxing square comes first, when moving Chiron is 90° ahead of its natal degree, between the start of the cycle and the opposition. The waning square comes later, when moving Chiron is 270° ahead, which is the same as 90° behind, between the opposition and the return.

For Saturn the two squares fall at roughly the same ages for everyone, around 7 and around 21 or 22 in the first cycle (see Saturn square Saturn). For Chiron there is no such pair of ages. Chiron's orbit is so stretched that it covers some quarters of the zodiac in about five years and others in about twenty, so the age at each square depends on which signs moving Chiron has to cross to get there. This page measures that, from the daily Chiron table behind the free chart, for 2,184 sample births from 1920 to 2010 and for the two invented people from the Chiron return page.

In short:

  • The waxing square came anywhere from age 4.8 to 24.7, the waning square from 26.1 to 45.5 (ages at the middle exact hit, defined below). For the same sample, the gap between the two ran from 12.8 years (natal Chiron in early Aries) to 37.8 years (natal Chiron in late Virgo).
  • Natal sign sets the pattern. Born with Chiron in Leo, Virgo or Libra, the waxing square came before age 9 and the waning one after 35. Born with Chiron in Aries or Pisces, the two squares were only about 13 to 16 years apart.
  • One square, one to five exact dates. Of the 2,184 waxing squares, 764 had a single exact hit, 1,315 had three and 105 had five; the waning squares split 656, 1,428 and 100. A three-hit square stretched over 7 to 10 months, a five-hit square over about a year and a half.
  • The two worked examples: Person A's squares came at about 6 and about 32, Person B's at about 18 and about 44.

Educational guide: Astrologist.com does not offer a transit calculator, transit calendar, Chiron timing tool or automated report. The free birth chart shows natal Chiron for birth dates from 1 January 1920 to 31 December 2060 inclusive. Every date and age on this page comes from an offline calculation made for this article with the same Chiron table, not from a site feature, and nothing here is computed for your own chart. Dates after October 2026 are model projections.

How this page fits with the other Chiron pages

Chiron return covers the return near fifty and shows, with the same two people, why the opposition is so irregular. Why Chiron changes signs unevenly explains the orbit itself: where Chiron moves fast (Virgo, Libra, Scorpio), where it crawls (Pisces, Aries, Taurus), and an opposition-age table by sign. This page does not repeat either. It uses the opposition and the return only as reference points, and measures the two squares: when they come, how far apart they are, and why each one can have one, three or five exact hits.

Where the two square points are

Take natal Chiron's longitude, counted from 0° Aries. Add 90° for the waxing square point and 270° for the waning one, wrapping at 360°. Person A, with natal Chiron at 10°34' Cancer, has the waxing point at 10°34' Libra and the waning point at 10°34' Aries. The two points are always opposite each other, and moving Chiron reaches the waxing one first.

What separates the squares is the half of the zodiac between the two points. Moving Chiron has to cross it to get from one square to the other, and how long that takes depends on whether that half contains the fast signs or the slow ones. In the table behind the free chart, Chiron's net progress from one year to the next ranged from about 3.5° in Aries to about 18° in Libra.

Method and rules fixed in advance

  • Positions. Moving and natal Chiron both come from the daily Chiron table behind the free chart (orbital elements from Lowell Observatory's astorb database, daily positions generated by Astrologist.com at 12:00 UT and linearly interpolated between days), read with the same routine and the same time handling as the chart. The table covers civil dates from 1 January 1920 to 31 December 2060. Nothing outside it was computed or estimated.
  • One continuous track. Chiron was sampled every 6 hours from the start of 1920 to the end of 2060 and joined into one continuous longitude, so the 0° Aries wrap needs no special handling. The two square points are natal Chiron + 90° and + 270° on that same track, never folded into a single "90° either way".
  • Exact hits and turning points. An exact hit is a moment when moving Chiron crosses the square point, forward (F) or backward (R). Each was refined to under a minute within the interpolated table. That figure only describes the arithmetic. It is not the accuracy of the table or of the astronomy, which are discussed below. Turning points (stations) are given to the day only, because the table itself is daily.
  • One square, one event. A square event is the complete run of crossings of one square point, with a turning point between each crossing and the next: F, or F R F, or F R F R F. It is complete once Chiron has turned direct beyond the point and cannot come back to it. A turning point that reached the square point without crossing it would count as a touch and be reported separately. There were none.
  • Which age to quote. When a square has several hits, the page gives the full span from first to final hit, and uses the middle hit as the one comparison age: the only hit for a single-hit square, the backward hit of an F R F square and the third hit of a five-hit square. The gap between the squares compares those middle hits on both sides, never a first hit on one side with a final hit on the other.
  • Sample. Births at 12:00 UT on the 1st and 15th of every month from 1 January 1920 to 15 December 2010: 2,184 births, chosen before any result was seen. Ages are in years of 365.2425 days.

Person A: squares at about 6 and about 32

Person A: 14 March 1990, 08:30, Rotterdam (07:30 UT). Natal Chiron 10°34' Cancer, retrograde. Waxing point 10°34' Libra, waning point 10°34' Aries.

19 Jul 2022 next retrograde turn, 5°52' past the point, so no further hit 16°25' Aries

For reference only: Person A's first exact opposition was on 30 December 2002 (age 12.8), and the return hits on 25 August 2039, 21 December 2039 and 24 May 2040 (ages 49.4 to 50.2), as on the Chiron return page.

The middle hits are 8 April 1996 and 5 October 2021, 25.5 years apart. Between them, moving Chiron had to cross Scorpio through Pisces, starting with its fastest signs and ending in its slowest. Notice the difference in pace: around the waxing square Chiron moved about 18° between one direct turn and the next, around the waning square only about 3.5°.

Person B: squares at about 18 and about 44

Person B: 20 January 2002, 11:05, Ghent (10:05 UT). Natal Chiron 4°11' Capricorn. Waxing point 4°11' Aries, waning point 4°11' Libra.

Date (UT) What happened Chiron Age
9 Dec 2018 turned direct, 6°17' short of the waxing point 27°54' Pisces
3 May 2019 waxing square, hit 1 (forward) 4°11' Aries 17.3

11 Jul 2020 next retrograde turn, 5°15' past the point, so no further hit 9°26' Aries
10 May 2045 turned direct, 21°38' short of the waning point 12°33' Virgo
30 Nov 2045 waning square, hit 1 (forward) 4°11' Libra 43.9
20 Jan 2046 turned retrograde, 2°26' past the point 6°37' Libra
14 Mar 2046 waning square, hit 2 (backward) 4°11' Libra 44.1
28 May 2046 turned direct, 4°01' short of the point 0°10' Libra
3 Aug 2046 waning square, hit 3 (forward) 4°11' Libra 44.5
6 Feb 2047 next retrograde turn, 20°19' past the point, so no further hit 24°30' Libra

For reference only: Person B's single exact opposition came on 15 June 2039 (age 37.4), and the return hits on 8 March, 19 May and 29 November 2052 (ages 50.1 to 50.9). Everything from November 2026 on, including the whole waning square, is a model projection.

The middle hits are 15 September 2019 and 14 March 2046, 26.5 years apart. So the two people have very different square ages, about 6 and 32 against about 18 and 44, yet similar gaps. That is because each of them has to cross a mix of fast and slow signs between the squares: Person A from Libra to Aries through the fast signs first, Person B from Aries to Libra through the slow signs first. The gap becomes extreme only when the half between the two square points is almost all fast or almost all slow, as the sample below shows.

2,184 births: square ages by natal Chiron sign

Every first waxing square and every first waning square in the sample was complete inside the table, including all 24 births in 2010, whose waning squares were over by the end of 2049. No square had to be cut off at the 2060 limit, so none is missing from the figures below. Ages are the middle-hit ages defined above; the hit counts are for single / three / five-hit squares.

Pisces 194 19.4 to 23.9 32.3 to 39.5 12.8 to 16.1 39/155/0 102/92/0

The number of births per sign is not a design choice: Chiron spends about eight years in Aries and under two in Libra, so the twice-monthly sample lands in the slow signs far more often.

Three things stand out:

  • The waxing square is earliest for Leo, Virgo and Libra natal Chiron, because the quarter it has to cover runs through Chiron's fastest signs. It is latest for Capricorn, Aquarius and Pisces natal Chiron, whose first quarter runs through Pisces, Aries and Taurus.
  • The widest gaps, 35 to 38 years, belong to Virgo and Libra natal Chiron. Their waxing square point lies in Sagittarius or Capricorn and their waning point in Gemini or Cancer, so the half between the squares is Chiron's slow half. The narrowest, under 15 years for most Aries and Pisces births, are the reverse.
  • The extremes in the sample: born 15 February 1920 with Chiron at 4°08' Aries, squares at 19.0 and 31.8, 12.8 years apart; born 1 September 1995 with Chiron at 28°51' Virgo, squares at 5.6 and 43.4, 37.8 years apart.

These ranges describe this sample of births from 1920 to 2010 and the calculator's Chiron table. They are orientation, not a guaranteed range for every possible birth date.

Why one, three or five exact hits

Every year Chiron turns retrograde for about four to five months and moves backward by roughly 4.5° to 6.5° before turning direct again. A square point that lies inside one of those backward stretches is crossed three times: forward, backward, forward. A point that lies between two backward stretches is crossed once.

Five hits need something more: two backward stretches in a row that cover the same degrees. That only happens where Chiron is slowest. In Aries, for example, its net progress from one year to the next was about 3.5°, while each backward stretch covered about 4.5°, so consecutive loops overlapped by up to about one degree. Across 1920 to 2060, overlaps like that occurred only between late Aquarius and late Taurus. That is why every five-hit waxing square in the sample belongs to Sagittarius, Capricorn or Aquarius natal Chiron (waxing point in Pisces, Aries or Taurus) and nearly every five-hit waning square to Gemini, Cancer or Leo natal Chiron.

A birth on 1 January 2002, 12:00 UT, nineteen days before Person B, shows it. Natal Chiron was at 2°13' Capricorn, waxing point 2°13' Aries. Chiron crossed it forward on 13 June 2018, turned retrograde on 5 July 2018 at 2°25' Aries, only 12' past the point, and crossed back on 26 July. It turned direct on 9 December 2018, crossed forward again on 29 March 2019, turned retrograde on 8 July 2019 at 5°56' Aries, crossed back on 31 October 2019, turned direct on 13 December 2019 at 1°25' Aries and crossed for the fifth and last time on 24 January 2020. Five hits from age 16.4 to 18.1. Person B's point, two degrees further on, sat inside only one loop and had three.

How long a square lasts from first to final hit follows from the same mechanics. In the sample, three-hit squares spanned 0.6 to 0.8 years and five-hit squares about 1.5 to 1.6 years.

No turning point in the sample reached a square point without crossing it, so there were no touches. There were 121 cases in which a turning point came within 3' of a square point; the closest stopped 7" short of it. The Swiss Ephemeris, checked independently at those 121 turning points, put Chiron on the same side of the square point every time. Near-misses that close are still the most fragile part of any count, which matters for the next section.

Birth time

Natal Chiron moves slowly, but not equally slowly for everyone. Moving each birth 12 hours earlier and later, a check fixed in advance, changed Person A's natal Chiron by at most 0.001° and the square dates by under an hour, because Chiron was almost stationary that day. Person B's natal Chiron moved by about 0.05°, which shifted the square dates by up to about a day. Both kept three hits per square.

That stability is specific to these two births. If your natal Chiron is close to the point where a later loop turns, a different birth time, or simply a different Chiron source, can change the number of hits. Check the turning points nearest your square points.

Precision, coverage and the Swiss check

Four different things are often mixed up, and they are kept apart here:

  • The arithmetic. Each hit was solved to under a minute on the interpolated table. That is a numerical tolerance only.
  • The table. Chiron positions are daily values with straight-line interpolation in between, so turning points are only resolved to the day.
  • The repository's own checks. The Chiron table is tested against the Swiss Ephemeris to 0.05° at every daily sample, with a separate gate on station timing. Those are regression tolerances for the whole table, not error bars on these dates.
  • What the Swiss Ephemeris showed for these dates. As an independent reference, and not as a source of any date on this page, its Chiron was within 1.2" of the square point at all twelve of Person A's and B's square hits; solving the hits again with Swiss Chiron moved them by at most about 4 minutes, and every turning point fell on the same UT date. Those are observed differences for these dates, not a guaranteed accuracy.

Coverage is a harder limit. The table runs from 1920 to 2060 and nothing is extrapolated. Every square in the sample fitted inside it, but the reference returns did not: for 29 births between April 2009 and December 2010, the return could not be completed by the end of 2060. That is "not inside the table", not "never". For births outside the sample, or squares after 2060, use a named external source that states its Chiron model and time standard, such as JPL's Horizons system, and take natal and moving Chiron from the same source.

How astrologers read the squares

Astrologers who use Chiron sometimes treat the two squares, like the Saturn squares, as checkpoints in a longer cycle: moments to look again at the themes they associate with natal Chiron, such as where you feel less sure of yourself and what you have learned to do with that. The waxing square is often described as a first encounter with those themes, the waning one as revisiting them with more experience. Take that as an optional prompt for reflection, nothing more.

This page shows why a single "Chiron square age" cannot be right: depending on the birth year the waxing square falls in early childhood or in the early twenties. The squares do not mean that something painful happens, has happened or needs uncovering, they do not predict events, relationships or health, and an exact date is not a turning point in your life. For anything to do with health or past experiences, a qualified professional is the right guide, not a chart.

Checking your own

  1. Look up natal Chiron on the free birth chart (birth dates from 1920 to 2060) and write it as a longitude from 0° Aries.
  2. Add 90° and 270° to get the two square points.
  3. In a Tropical ephemeris, find every date when Chiron reaches each point. Look at the retrograde and direct turns around each one: if a turn comes close to the point, check whether Chiron actually crosses it.
  4. Write down your source and its time standard, give dates to the day, and remember that dates from November 2026 on are projections in any ephemeris.

The general method is in how to read transits without a transit tool. Ask the Astrologist can discuss natal Chiron or dates you have found in your own source; it does not compute transit dates.
