Planets Conjunct the Ascendant or Midheaven: Sun to Pluto
Updated October 30, 2026 · Astrologist.com Editorial
A planet conjunct the Ascendant sits close in degrees to the point rising at birth; a planet conjunct the Midheaven sits close to the point culminating on the local meridian. This page gives one short reading for each planet, from the Sun to Pluto, on each of those two angles. The Descendant and IC are covered on angular planets, and the measuring method is on how to find angular planets.
Interpretation guide, not a chart feature. The free birth chart does not detect planets conjunct the Ascendant or Midheaven: it draws no planet-to-angle lines and does not show the angle degrees as numbers, so it cannot tell you whether a planet is close. Any figures on these pages come from offline calculations. In the chat you can discuss these readings, or a distance you have already measured, but the chat is not described here as working out conjunctions to your angles.
Before reading the sections
What counts as conjunct. Astrologers draw the line in different places. The method page uses this guide's working band, within 5° either side of the angle in zodiac longitude, as a teaching convention; it is not a site-wide angle orb and not the 8° or 6° natal aspect orb. A wider or tighter band changes which planets qualify, not what each one means.
Either side of the angle. A planet just before the Ascendant is usually in the 12th house, and one just before the Midheaven usually in the 9th. Those planets can still be read as conjunct the angle, and they keep their own house; nothing here moves them into the 1st or 10th. Equally, a planet deep in the 1st or 10th house may be far from the angle. Each section below links the planet's 1st- and 10th-house pages as whole-house readings, which are a separate layer from the contact with the angle degree. House meanings explains the house layer.
Not the chart ruler, not the 10th ruler. A planet conjunct the Ascendant is not automatically your chart ruler; that is the ruler of the rising sign (see what is a chart ruler?). A planet conjunct the Midheaven is not automatically the ruler of the 10th house (see ruler of the 10th house). The two can coincide, but they are different questions.
How to read each paragraph. The planet says what is involved, the angle says where it tends to show, and the planet's sign describes how. These are tendencies. None of them predicts an event, a career outcome, recognition, looks or health, and a reliable birth time is needed before any of them applies.
Sun
Sun conjunct the Ascendant. Identity and self-expression tend to sit near the surface. The person's sense of purpose may be readable in their manner, and they often prefer to approach situations directly and in their own way.
Sun conjunct the Midheaven. The urge to become someone tends to point toward a visible role or direction. Purpose and public aims are often closely linked, and the person may want their direction in life to reflect who they are.
Whole-house readings, separate from the angle contact: Sun in the 1st house, Sun in the 10th house.
Moon
Moon conjunct the Ascendant. Moods and needs tend to show readily. The first response to a new situation is often an emotional one, and the person may be quick to pick up the atmosphere around them.
Moon conjunct the Midheaven. Feelings and care can become part of how a person is seen in their wider world. Public aims may be shaped by a wish to look after, to belong, or to respond to what others need.
Whole-house readings, separate from the angle contact: Moon in the 1st house, Moon in the 10th house.
Mercury
Mercury conjunct the Ascendant. Curiosity and talk tend to lead. The person may meet the world first through questions, observations and words, and is often read by others as alert or quick.
Mercury conjunct the Midheaven. Thinking, speaking, writing or exchanging information can sit close to the person's public direction. Their aims may be framed in terms of ideas, skills or communication.
Whole-house readings, separate from the angle contact: Mercury in the 1st house, Mercury in the 10th house.
Venus
Venus conjunct the Ascendant. A preference for ease, courtesy and pleasantness tends to colour the person's manner. They may approach situations by seeking agreement and an agreeable atmosphere.
Venus conjunct the Midheaven. Values, taste and the wish for harmony can shape public aims. The person may want their visible role to involve cooperation, design or bringing people together.
Whole-house readings, separate from the angle contact: Venus in the 1st house, Venus in the 10th house.
Mars
Mars conjunct the Ascendant. Drive tends to show up front. The person may approach new situations quickly and assertively, with a preference for action over waiting.
Mars conjunct the Midheaven. Ambition and the urge to compete or initiate can point toward public goals. The person may pursue aims energetically and prefer roles where they can take the lead.
Whole-house readings, separate from the angle contact: Mars in the 1st house, Mars in the 10th house.
Jupiter
Jupiter conjunct the Ascendant. Optimism and a broad outlook tend to colour first contact with the world. The person often approaches situations expecting room to grow, and may come across as open-handed.
Jupiter conjunct the Midheaven. Public aims can be shaped by a wish to expand, teach, explore or find meaning. The person may look for a direction in life that feels larger than a job title.
Whole-house readings, separate from the angle contact: Jupiter in the 1st house, Jupiter in the 10th house.
Saturn
Saturn conjunct the Ascendant. Caution and self-control tend to show in the person's manner. They may approach new situations carefully, testing the ground before committing.
Saturn conjunct the Midheaven. Responsibility and long-term effort can sit close to public aims. The person may take duties seriously and prefer goals built step by step over quick results.
Whole-house readings, separate from the angle contact: Saturn in the 1st house, Saturn in the 10th house.
Uranus
Uranus, Neptune and Pluto move slowly and stay in a sign for years, so their sign is shared by a whole generation. Near an angle, astrologers read them as generational themes that become personal for that chart, not as fate.
Uranus conjunct the Ascendant. Independence and a dislike of routine tend to show in the person's manner. They may approach situations in an unconventional way and resist fitting a ready-made role.
Uranus conjunct the Midheaven. Public aims can carry a wish for freedom, innovation or change. The person may prefer a direction that leaves room to experiment and to break from expected paths.
Whole-house readings, separate from the angle contact: Uranus in the 1st house, Uranus in the 10th house.
Neptune
Neptune conjunct the Ascendant. Sensitivity and receptiveness tend to colour the person's manner, and others may find them hard to pin down. Boundaries between self and surroundings can feel thin.
Neptune conjunct the Midheaven. Ideals, imagination or a wish to serve something larger can shape public aims. Clarity about direction may take time, and the gap between the ideal and the practical is a recurring theme.
Whole-house readings, separate from the angle contact: Neptune in the 1st house, Neptune in the 10th house.
Pluto
Pluto conjunct the Ascendant. Intensity and reserve tend to show in the person's manner. They may approach new situations watchfully, sizing up what lies beneath the surface before revealing much.
Pluto conjunct the Midheaven. Public aims can be bound up with themes of control, depth and renewal. The person may be drawn to roles that involve getting to the root of things or reshaping them.
Whole-house readings, separate from the angle contact: Pluto in the 1st house, Pluto in the 10th house.
Putting a reading together
Start with the measured distance and the side of the angle, then add the planet's sign, its house, and any aspects to other planets. Two planets near the same angle are read together. If your birth time is uncertain, check whether the planet stays near the angle across the whole plausible window before relying on any paragraph here; the birth-time test is Step 7 of how to find angular planets.
Next steps
Angular planets covers the Descendant and IC and the difference from angular houses; angular houses covers the whole-house view. Chart angles explained, what is the Midheaven? and Ascendant degree vs Rising sign explain the points themselves, and planet meanings the planets. The methodology page and the Birth Charts library have the rest.
