Sun and Moon House Overlays in Synastry, House by House

When one person's Sun or Moon falls in the other person's natal houses, astrologers treat it as one of the more noticeable overlays. The Sun describes identity, purpose and vitality; the Moon describes emotional needs, comfort and habit. Placed in someone else's house, each is read as pointing to the part of the house owner's life where those qualities in the other person may be most felt. This guide covers both planets house by house and then shows how to handle the visiting Moon when its birth time is unknown.

Educational guide: Astrologist.com does not currently calculate synastry, inter-chart aspects, house overlays or composite charts. The compatibility tool provides a sign-level estimate based on the Sun, Moon and Rising signs; known birth times are required for that tool. The contacts discussed here must be identified separately from the two charts' actual positions.

The method itself, with cusp arithmetic and both directions worked in full, is on synastry house overlays. Everything below assumes the house owner's cusps come from a reliable birth time through the cusp workflow.

The visiting Sun, house by house

These are common readings, phrased as possibilities. "Their Sun in your 5th" means the other person's Sun placed in your houses.

  • 1st house: their sense of self may sit close to how you present yourself, so you may notice each other's style quickly, sometimes as encouragement and sometimes as comparison.
  • 2nd house: their purpose touches your resources and self-worth; questions of money, values and what you each find worth having may come up early.
  • 3rd house: they may light up everyday conversation, learning and the local round of errands and messages.
  • 4th house: their presence is often felt at home or around family; some couples find it warming, others find it takes space.
  • 5th house: play, creativity and romance are the usual setting, which astrologers often read as enjoyment in each other's company.
  • 6th house: their purpose meets your routines and work habits, which can mean practical help or friction over how the day is organised.
  • 7th house: they may feel like a clear counterpart in one-to-one life. It is not a sign of marriage.
  • 8th house: trust, intimacy and what is shared are the setting; the overlay is often read as intense, but intensity is not a measure of fit.
  • 9th house: beliefs, study and travel; they may widen or question your outlook.
  • 10th house: your work and public direction; their influence may be felt in ambitions or reputation.
  • 11th house: friendship, groups and hopes; the bond may carry a friendly, shared-project feel.
  • 12th house: rest, solitude and what goes unsaid; their presence may be felt quietly, which is not the same as secrecy.

The visiting Moon, house by house

The Moon shifts the emphasis from identity to comfort: where their emotional needs and moods land in your life.

  • 1st house: their feelings may register quickly with you, and you may adapt your manner around them.
  • 2nd house: comfort and security get tied to practical matters such as spending, food and possessions.
  • 3rd house: feelings tend to come out in talk, messages and everyday contact.
  • 4th house: a strong association with home and family life; being at home together may matter.
  • 5th house: shared fun and affection; their moods may colour your leisure.
  • 6th house: care shows in routines, meals, chores and looking after health.
  • 7th house: emotional needs land in the partnership itself, often read as a sense of closeness, with the usual caution that nothing here predicts a relationship's course.
  • 8th house: emotional depth and trust; also questions of privacy and what is shared.
  • 9th house: feelings bound up with beliefs, travel or study; comfort may come from shared outlooks.
  • 10th house: their emotional responses may touch your public or working life.
  • 11th house: comfort through friendship and shared groups.
  • 12th house: an unspoken, private emotional link; some people describe it as soothing, others as hard to name.

A Sun or Moon in the house owner's 7th, 5th or 8th is often singled out, but no overlay is a score, and a quiet house is not a missing connection. Sun-Moon contacts covers the separate aspect layer between the two planets.

Worked example: Sanne's Sun and Moon in Ruben's houses

Ruben and Sanne are fictional; their charts were calculated with the routines behind the free chart.

  • Ruben, the house owner: 30 June 1986, 22:15, Amsterdam (52.3676° N, 4.9041° E), summer time UTC+2. Placidus, Capricorn rising. His 1st and 7th houses are each 55.05° wide, his 5th and 11th only 16.40°. Cusps: 1st 283.08° (13°04' Capricorn), 2nd 338.13° (8°07' Pisces), 3rd 22.87° (22°52' Aries), 4th 49.70°, 5th 68.60°, 6th 85.00°, 7th 103.08°, 8th 158.13°, 9th 202.87° (22°52' Libra), 10th 229.70° (19°42' Scorpio), 11th 248.60°, 12th 265.00°.
  • Sanne, the visitor: 23 October 1988, Groningen (53.2194° N, 6.5665° E), birth time unknown. The Netherlands was on standard time, UTC+1. Her chart was calculated at all 1,440 whole-minute times from 00:00 to 23:59 local time.

Sanne's Sun. It runs from 29°45' Libra at 00:00 to 0°45' Scorpio at 23:59, entering Scorpio at 05:35, so without a time her Sun sign is Libra or Scorpio. The overlay is not in doubt: Ruben's 9th house starts at 22°52' Libra and is 26.83° wide, and the Sun stays 6.89° to 7.89° past that cusp all day. Her Sun is in his 9th whatever her birth time. A sign question and a house question can have different answers.

Sanne's Moon. It runs from 28°46' Pisces at 00:00 to 13°39' Aries at 23:59, entering Aries at 01:59. Ruben's 2nd house starts at 8°07' Pisces and ends at his 3rd cusp, 22°52' Aries, crossing 0° Aries on the way. Measured forward from the 2nd cusp, the Moon starts 20.64° in and ends 35.52° in, inside a house 44.74° wide, and still 9.22° short of the 3rd cusp at 23:59. Every minute of the date puts it in his 2nd. Her Moon sign is uncertain (Pisces or Aries), but the overlay is stable.

The free chart's noon reference for Sanne would show the Moon at 6°12' Aries. It happens to fall in the same house, but that is not why the overlay counts as stable: the whole range does.

How much depends on Ruben's time? Rerunning his chart minute by minute with Sanne's ranges held fixed, the Moon stays in his 2nd for any birth time from 21:47 to 23:03. Her Sun would start to fall in his 8th if he had been born at 22:37 or later, 22 minutes after his recorded time. The visitor's missing hour is settled; the house owner's recorded hour still carries the overlay.

The next day: the Moon crosses a cusp

Had Sanne been born on 24 October 1988, her Moon would run from 13°39' Aries to 28°31' Aries and cross Ruben's 3rd cusp at 22°52' Aries at 14:50 local time. For a birth from 00:00 to 14:49 it would be in his 2nd; from 14:50 to 23:59 in his 3rd. The noon reference, 21°06' Aries, sits in the 2nd, but noon is a calculation anchor and not her birth time, so it cannot choose between them. The overlay is uncertain: 2nd or 3rd. Her Sun, 0°45' to 1°45' Scorpio that day, stays in Ruben's 9th.

When a Moon overlay is uncertain like this, both possible houses can be read as questions, and neither should be presented as the answer. A recorded or well-attested birth time is the only thing that closes it; house overlays and birth time sets out the full check, including stations for the slower planets.

Only one direction is available

Because Sanne's birth time is unknown, she has no reliable cusps. Ruben's Sun and Moon cannot be placed in her houses at all, and nothing from the stable direction can be turned round to fill the gap. Report what is known (her Sun in his 9th, her Moon in his 2nd) and leave the other direction open.

Read in context, Sanne's Moon shares Ruben's 2nd house with his own Jupiter at 22°37' Pisces, and an astrologer might ask how comfort and generosity around money or possessions feel between them. That is a question to explore, not something the overlay establishes.

Next steps

Run the house owner's chart with a reliable time in the free birth chart and the visitor's chart with or without one, then follow the cusp workflow for the twelve numbers. For the visitor's Moon sign on an unknown-time date, see the Moon without a birth time. The compatibility tool gives a separate sign-level estimate and needs both birth times.
