Venus and Mars House Overlays in Synastry: Affection and Drive

← Back to Compatibility

Venus and Mars are the planets astrologers most often look at for attraction, affection and desire, so their house overlays get a lot of attention. Venus describes what a person enjoys, values and offers as warmth; Mars describes drive, initiative, assertion and desire. When one person's Venus or Mars falls in the other person's houses, the house is read as the area of the house owner's life where that warmth or that push may be most noticeable. Neither planet in any house says whether two people belong together.

Educational guide: Astrologist.com does not currently calculate synastry, inter-chart aspects, house overlays or composite charts. The compatibility tool provides a sign-level estimate based on the Sun, Moon and Rising signs; known birth times are required for that tool. The contacts discussed here must be identified separately from the two charts' actual positions.

For the cusp arithmetic and the reasons each direction is checked separately, start with synastry house overlays. The house owner's twelve cusps come from the cusp workflow, not from the wheel.

Readings by house

The table gives common astrological readings for the other person's Venus or Mars in your house. They describe possible themes, not behaviour anyone can be held to.

Your house Their Venus may bring Their Mars may bring
1st Appreciation of how you look and carry yourself A direct, energising effect on how you present yourself, sometimes felt as pressure
2nd Shared taste, gifts, and conversations about value and money Push around earning or spending; disagreements over resources are possible
3rd Easy, pleasant talk and frequent contact Lively debate, quick replies, occasional sharp words
4th Comfort and beauty at home, a wish to make a space together Activity or tension around home and family arrangements
5th Romance, play and shared pleasures Competitive fun, physical activity, strong attraction
6th Kindness in daily routines and practical care Getting things done together, or friction over how work is shared
7th A sense of ease in one-to-one partnership Directness in the partnership: momentum, and sometimes rivalry
8th Closeness, trust and generosity with what is shared Intensity around intimacy, control or joint resources
9th Shared enjoyment of ideas, travel or study Debates about beliefs, or a push to explore
10th Support for your public image or career Ambition and pressure around goals and status
11th Affection inside friendship and shared groups Energy for joint projects; friction within a circle is possible
12th A quiet, private tenderness Hidden frustration or effort behind the scenes; it may stay unspoken

A Venus overlay in the 7th or 5th is often called promising and a Mars overlay in the 8th intense, but these are themes, not ratings. A Mars overlay does not license pressure and a Venus overlay does not guarantee kindness; how two people treat each other is shown by what they do, not by a chart.

Worked example: Milan and Jesse, both directions

Milan and Jesse are fictional; both charts were calculated with the routines behind the free chart, Tropical zodiac and Placidus houses.

  • Milan: 14 February 1995, 07:20, Eindhoven (51.4416° N, 5.4697° E), standard time UTC+1. Aquarius rising. Venus 10°40' Capricorn, Mars 22°02' Leo, retrograde. Cusps: 1st 307.04°, 2nd 7.30°, 3rd 43.74°, 4th 66.15°, 5th 83.92°, 6th 101.90° (11°54' Cancer), 7th 127.04° (7°02' Leo), 8th 187.30°, 9th 223.74°, 10th 246.15°, 11th 263.92°, 12th 281.90°.
  • Jesse: 5 September 1996, 18:40, Brussels (50.8503° N, 4.3517° E), summer time UTC+2. Also Aquarius rising, at 0°37'. Venus 28°23' Cancer, Mars 27°23' Cancer. Cusps: 1st 300.63°, 2nd 359.01°, 3rd 37.76°, 4th 61.53°, 5th 79.81°, 6th 97.54°, 7th 120.63° (0°37' Leo), 8th 179.01°, 9th 217.76°, 10th 241.53°, 11th 259.81° (19°48' Sagittarius), 12th 277.54° (7°32' Capricorn).

Jesse's Venus and Mars in Milan's houses. Jesse's Venus (118.39°) is 16.49° past Milan's 6th cusp in a house 25.14° wide, and Jesse's Mars (117.39°) is 15.49° past it. Both sit in Milan's 6th, 8.65° and 9.65° short of his 7th cusp. An astrologer might ask how affection and drive from Jesse show up in Milan's routines and shared work: helping with the practical side of life, or disagreeing about how it should be done.

Milan's Venus and Mars in Jesse's houses. Milan's Venus (280.67°) is 3.13° past Jesse's 12th cusp and lands in her 12th. Milan's Mars (142.04°) is 21.41° past her 7th cusp, well inside a 58.38° 7th house. Its retrograde status changes nothing in the placement. The questions here are different: a private, less visible warmth from Milan, and his assertiveness meeting her one-to-one life head on.

Note how little the two directions resemble each other. Both have Aquarius rising, yet Jesse's pair lands in Milan's 6th while Milan's planets split between Jesse's 12th and 7th, because their cusps differ by several degrees and their planets sit in different places.

How far can the birth times move this?

The house owner's time. Rerunning Milan's chart minute by minute, Jesse's Venus and Mars both stay in his 6th for any time from 06:57 to at least 07:50. From 06:54 to 06:56 Jesse's Venus would be in Milan's 7th while her Mars stayed in his 6th, and at 06:53 or earlier both would be in his 7th. If Milan had really been born 24 or more minutes earlier than recorded, the reading would change. Rerunning Jesse's chart, Milan's Venus would move from her 12th to her 11th if she had been born at 18:53 or later, only 13 minutes after her recorded time; Milan's Mars stays in her 7th for any time of hers from 18:15 to 19:05.

The visiting person's time. Suppose instead that Jesse's time were unknown. Over the whole local date of 5 September 1996, checked at all 1,440 whole-minute times, her Venus ran from 27°34' to 28°37' Cancer and her Mars from 26°54' to 27°31' Cancer, and both stayed in Milan's 6th all day. With Milan's time unknown instead, his Venus ran from 10°19' to 11°27' Capricorn (2.78° to 3.92° past Jesse's 12th cusp) and his retrograde Mars from 22°10' back to 21°46' Leo, both in the same houses of Jesse's all day. Venus and Mars rarely cover much more than a degree in a day, so their overlays usually survive a missing visitor time; a planet close to a cusp, or one at a station, still needs its full range over the date. House overlays and birth time works through both kinds of case.

Neither of these whole-date checks can replace the house owner's time. If Jesse's time were unknown, Milan's planets could not be placed in her houses at all.

Overlays and aspects are separate layers

Jesse's Venus and Mars are 1° apart in her own chart, and both fall in the same house of Milan's. That is an overlay fact. Whether her Venus or Mars aspects Milan's Venus or Mars is a different check, measured by degree with the orbs in Venus-Mars contacts. A pair can have strong Venus-Mars overlays and no Venus-Mars aspect, or the other way round, and neither layer cancels the other.

For Venus or Mars in a person's own chart, see the natal pages such as Venus in the 7th house; those describe one person's placements, not a meeting of two.

Next steps

Take each person's Venus and Mars from the free birth chart table, get each house owner's cusps through the cusp workflow, and list the overlays one direction at a time. The compatibility tool is a separate sign-level estimate from the Sun, Moon and Rising signs; it does not use Venus, Mars or house overlays. Ask the Astrologist can discuss Venus and Mars in a single natal chart calculated on this site.
