How to Find Your Profection Year and Lord of the Year
Updated October 31, 2026 · Astrologist.com Editorial
Once you know your Rising sign, your profection year is quick to find by hand. You need three things: your Rising sign, your birth date and the date you are asking about. Then:
- Read your Rising sign from a chart with a recorded birth time.
- Work out your age in completed years on the date in question.
- Divide that age by 12. The remainder plus one is the house of the year; the year's sign is that remainder's number of signs on from your Rising sign.
- Name the Lord of the Year: the traditional ruler of that sign.
- Find the Lord in your own chart: its sign, and its house counted by whole signs.
Annual profections are a separate traditional timing technique, not a transit: no current planet position is involved. What the technique is and how astrologers read it is on annual profections.
What the site does and does not do: with a birth time, the free birth chart gives you the Rising sign (step 1) and each planet's sign (step 5). It does not work out a profection year, a profected sign, a Lord of the Year or a whole-sign house number, so steps 2 to 5 are yours to do with the tables below. The worked results on this page are hand arithmetic from charts calculated with the free chart's routines (see the methodology page), offered as education rather than as a hidden site feature. Ask the Astrologist does not receive a profection year or Lord and should not be treated as a profection calculator; if you share the result you found, it can talk it through.
Step 1: read your Rising sign
On the free chart, the Rising sign appears in the badge beside the Sun and Moon once you enter a birth time. Only the sign matters for this method; the exact Ascendant degree does not change the count (see Ascendant degree vs Rising sign).
If you do not have a recorded birth time, stop here and read the section on uncertain birth times below before going further.
Step 2: your completed age on the date
Use your age in whole years on the date you are asking about. On these pages the profection year runs from one civil birthday, in local time, to the day before the next. So for any date before this year's birthday, use last year's age.
- Born 27 August 1991, asking about 31 October 2026: the 2026 birthday has passed, so the age is 35.
- Same person, asking about 1 August 2026: the birthday has not yet come, so the age is 34.
Age 0 is the year from birth to the first birthday. It is a real year in the count, and forgetting it is the most common reason for an answer that is one house off.
Step 3: house and sign of the year
Divide the completed age by 12 and keep the remainder. Then:
- House of the year = remainder + 1.
- Sign of the year = the Rising sign moved on by the remainder. A remainder of 0 means no move: the year's sign is the Rising sign itself.
| Completed ages | Remainder | House of the year | Signs to move on from the Rising sign |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0, 12, 24, 36, 48, 60, 72, 84 | 0 | 1st | none (the Rising sign) |
| 1, 13, 25, 37, 49, 61, 73, 85 | 1 | 2nd | 1 |
| 2, 14, 26, 38, 50, 62, 74, 86 | 2 | 3rd | 2 |
| 3, 15, 27, 39, 51, 63, 75, 87 | 3 | 4th | 3 |
| 4, 16, 28, 40, 52, 64, 76, 88 | 4 | 5th | 4 |
| 5, 17, 29, 41, 53, 65, 77, 89 | 5 | 6th | 5 |
| 6, 18, 30, 42, 54, 66, 78, 90 | 6 | 7th | 6 (the opposite sign) |
| 7, 19, 31, 43, 55, 67, 79, 91 | 7 | 8th | 7 |
| 8, 20, 32, 44, 56, 68, 80, 92 | 8 | 9th | 8 |
| 9, 21, 33, 45, 57, 69, 81, 93 | 9 | 10th | 9 |
| 10, 22, 34, 46, 58, 70, 82, 94 | 10 | 11th | 10 |
| 11, 23, 35, 47, 59, 71, 83, 95 | 11 | 12th | 11 (one sign before the Rising sign) |
The signs in order are Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius, Pisces, then back to Aries. To move on by three from Virgo, step Libra (1), Scorpio (2), Sagittarius (3): the year's sign is Sagittarius.
Step 4: name the Lord of the Year
The Lord of the Year is the traditional ruler of the year's sign. This technique uses only the seven traditional planets, so the list below is the one to use here even though Astrologist.com elsewhere gives the modern ruler first.
| Sign of the year | Lord of the Year |
|---|---|
| Aries, Scorpio | Mars |
| Taurus, Libra | Venus |
| Gemini, Virgo | Mercury |
| Cancer | Moon |
| Leo | Sun |
| Sagittarius, Pisces | Jupiter |
| Capricorn, Aquarius | Saturn |
Step 5: find the Lord in your chart
Look up the Lord's sign in the planet table under the free chart's wheel. Then count its whole-sign house: the Rising sign is 1, the next sign 2, and so on round to the Lord's sign.
The wheel itself shows the Lord in a numbered Placidus house. That number can differ from the whole-sign one, because Placidus house lines can fall in the middle of a sign. The technique uses the whole-sign house; it is still worth noting the Placidus one so you know why the two charts disagree. Why your houses differ between charts has a checklist, and house rulers explained covers rulership in general.
Worked table: Lotte (and one row for Noor)
Lotte is a fictional example chart used on this site: Utrecht, 27 August 1991, 06:55 CEST, a recorded time. Her chart, recalculated with the free chart's routines, has Virgo rising (Ascendant 4°44′ Virgo). Noor, another fictional chart (Amsterdam, 2 December 1992, 21:30 CET), has Leo rising. Reference date: 31 October 2026, plus Lotte's next birthday.
| Chart | Date | Completed age | House of the year | Sign of the year | Lord | Lord's natal sign | Lord's whole-sign house | Lord's Placidus house on the free chart |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Lotte (Virgo rising) | 31 Oct 2026 | 35 | 12th | Leo | Sun | Virgo | 1st | 12th |
| Lotte (Virgo rising) | from 27 Aug 2027 | 36 | 1st | Virgo | Mercury | Leo | 12th | 12th |
| Noor (Leo rising) | 31 Oct 2026 | 33 | 10th | Taurus | Venus | Capricorn | 6th | 6th |
Lotte at 35. 35 divided by 12 leaves 11, so it is her 12th-house year, and moving eleven signs on from Virgo lands on Leo, the sign just before her Rising sign. Leo's ruler, the Sun, is her Lord of the Year from 27 August 2026. Her natal Sun is at 3°26′ Virgo. Virgo is her Rising sign, so by whole signs the Sun is in her 1st house. On the free chart's wheel it is in the 12th, because it sits about a degree and a quarter before her Ascendant at 4°44′ Virgo, and Placidus starts the 1st house at the Ascendant degree.
Lotte at 36. From her birthday on 27 August 2027 the count returns to the Rising sign: a 1st-house Virgo year with Mercury as Lord. Her Mercury is at 24°18′ Leo, the 12th house in both systems.
Noor at 33. 33 leaves 9, so she is in her 10th-house year, nine signs on from Leo: Taurus, with Venus as Lord. Her Venus in Capricorn is in the 6th house both ways.
A 12th-house year with the Lord in the 1st, as for Lotte, is not a bad sign or a good one. It only tells an astrologer which part of the chart they would look at first.
If your birth time is uncertain
Everything above depends on the Rising sign, and the Rising sign changes on average about every two hours, much faster for some signs and slower for others. So:
- No birth time, no personal profection year. Without a reliable Rising sign this method does not give you a year sign or a Lord. Do not use noon, or any other stand-in time, as if it were your birth time.
- A known time range can work. If the Rising sign stays the same through the whole range, the profection sequence is fixed.
- Check the whole range, not just the ends. Over a broad range the Rising sign can change and then, in principle, come back. Ruben's birth date shows the extreme case: in London on 5 January 1993, Libra was rising at both 00:00 and 23:59, yet every other sign rose in between. Step through the range in small steps, a few minutes apart, and note every Rising sign you find.
- More than one Rising sign means more than one sequence. Each candidate Rising sign gives its own sequence, moved by the same number of signs as the Rising sign. Neighbouring candidates are usually one sign apart, but a broad range can span more.
Example. Ruben (London, 5 January 1993) has 12:00 recorded, and Taurus rises from 11:53 to 13:01, so his recorded time sits seven minutes inside the start of the Taurus window. Suppose instead his time were known only as "between 11:45 and 12:15". From 11:45 to 11:52 Aries was rising, so two sequences are possible:
| Candidate Rising sign | Age 33 (31 Oct 2026) | Lord | Age 34 (from 5 Jan 2027) | Lord |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Taurus (11:53 to 12:15) | 10th house, Aquarius | Saturn | 11th house, Pisces | Jupiter |
| Aries (11:45 to 11:52) | 10th house, Capricorn | Saturn | 11th house, Aquarius | Saturn |
The house number of the year is the same, because it depends only on age, but the sign is not. In this case Saturn is Lord at 33 either way, yet its whole-sign house changes (10th from Taurus, 11th from Aries), and at 34 the Lords differ. With a range like that, report both sequences, or say the year cannot be fixed. Lotte's Virgo rising, by contrast, held from 06:28 to 09:19 on her birth date, so a time error of a quarter of an hour would not change her sequence. How accurate your birth time needs to be shows how to test a time window, and reading a chart without a birth time covers what is still available.
High latitudes. Above 66° north or south the free chart uses Equal houses, which does not matter here because only the Rising sign is used, but at polar latitudes the site treats the Rising sign itself as provisional until it is checked against an independent source. These pages give no polar example; see chart angles at high latitudes.
Common mistakes
- Counting from Aries. The count starts at your Rising sign, not at the first sign of the zodiac.
- Being one house off. Age 0 is the 1st-house year. At 12, 24, 36 and so on you are back on the Rising sign.
- Switching on 1 January. The year changes on your birthday, not at New Year.
- Using the Placidus house number for the Lord. The technique counts whole signs; the free chart's wheel uses Placidus.
- Naming a modern ruler as Lord. For Scorpio, Aquarius and Pisces years the Lord here is Mars, Saturn and Jupiter.
- Using a guessed or noon birth time. No reliable Rising sign means no personal sequence.
- Reading the year as a forecast. The house and Lord describe a focus, not an event.
