Pluto Square Pluto: Why the Age Depends on Your Birth Year
Updated October 27, 2026 · Astrologist.com Editorial
Pluto square Pluto is the transit in which moving Pluto stands 90° ahead of the degree natal Pluto held at your birth. This page is about that first, waxing square only. The later phases of the cycle come much later and are not measured here.
You will often read that the Pluto square is a midlife transit. Whether that holds depends almost entirely on when you were born. Pluto's orbit is strongly elongated, so it needs about twelve years for one sign in some parts of the zodiac and about thirty in others, and the first quarter of the cycle can take anything from under forty years to over sixty. This page measures it with the Pluto routine behind the free chart, for 2,184 sample births from 1920 to 2010 and for the three invented people already used on other transit pages.
The short version:
- The waxing square came between ages 35.7 and 62.1 across the sample (age at the middle exact hit, defined below). Half the births had it by 43.1.
- The curve is U-shaped by birth year. Births in the early 1920s had it at about 52 to 55, births from about 1960 to 1974 at about 36 to 39, births in 2005 to 2010 at about 55 to 62.
- Never once, always three or five times. Every square in the sample had either three exact hits (1,534 births) or five (650). A three-hit square lasted about ten months from first to final hit, a five-hit square about one and a half to one and three quarter years.
- The three worked examples (born 1970, 1990 and 2002) have their middle hits at 35.8, 44.9 and 54.1.
Educational guide: Astrologist.com does not offer a transit calculator, transit calendar, Pluto timing tool or automated report. The free birth chart shows natal Pluto for birth dates from 1 January 1885 to 31 December 2099. Every date and age here comes from an offline calculation made for this article with the same Pluto routine, not from a feature of the site, and nothing is computed for your own chart. Dates after October 2026 are model projections.
How this page fits with the midlife overview
Neptune and Pluto midlife transits is the general overview: what astrologers associate with the slow squares and how they are often read beside the Uranus opposition. This page does not repeat that. It does one thing: it dates the waxing Pluto square for a fixed sample of births and shows how far its age moves from one generation to the next. For the Neptune square, which behaves in the opposite way, see Neptune square Neptune.
Method and rules fixed in advance
- Positions. Natal and moving Pluto both come from the production routine behind the free chart (the Meeus ch. 37 Pluto theory, reduced to apparent Tropical longitude of date), with the same time handling. That routine only answers for civil dates from 1 January 1885 to 31 December 2099, and nothing outside that range was computed or estimated.
- One continuous track. Pluto was sampled every 12 hours from 1 January 1920 to 31 December 2099 and joined into one continuous longitude, so the wrap at 0° Aries needs no special treatment. The square point is natal Pluto + 90° on that track.
- Exact hits and turning points. An exact hit is a moment when moving Pluto crosses the square point, forward (F) or backward (R), refined to under a minute within the production model. That is a numerical tolerance, not the accuracy of the model. Turning points (stations) were located for the grouping and are given to the day.
- One square, one event. The square is the complete run of crossings of the point, with a turning point between each crossing and the next: F, F R F or F R F R F. It is complete once Pluto has turned direct beyond the point and cannot come back. A turning point that reached the point without crossing would be a touch, reported separately.
- Which age to quote. The middle crossing in time order is the one comparison age: the backward hit of a three-hit square, the third hit of a five-hit square. First hit, final hit and span are reported as well.
- Sample. Births at 12:00 UT on the 1st and 15th of every month, 1 January 1920 to 15 December 2010: 2,184 births, chosen before any result was seen. Each natal Pluto was checked against the free chart's own birth-chart routine (largest difference 0.005°, the chart's 0.01° storage step). Ages are in years of 365.2425 days.
Three births, three very different ages
The three people are the invented births from Uranus square Uranus (Bristol) and Chiron return (Persons A and B). They were chosen for those pages, not for this one.
Bristol, born 1970: square at about 36
Birth: 12 August 1970, 14:20, Bristol (13:20 UT; British Standard Time trial). Natal Pluto 25°51' Virgo. Square point 25°51' Sagittarius.
| Date (UT) | What happened | Pluto | Age |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2 Sep 2005 | turned direct, 4°01' short of the square point | 21°49' Sagittarius | |
| 29 Jan 2006 | hit 1 (forward) | 25°51' Sagittarius | 35.5 |
| 29 Mar 2006 | turned retrograde, 0°55' past the point | 26°45' Sagittarius | |
| 31 May 2006 | hit 2 (backward) | 25°51' Sagittarius | 35.8 |
| 4 Sep 2006 | turned direct, 1°46' short of the point | 24°04' Sagittarius | |
| 29 Nov 2006 | hit 3 (forward) | 25°51' Sagittarius | 36.3 |
| 31 Mar 2007 | next retrograde turn, 3°07' past the point, so no further hit | 28°58' Sagittarius |
Three hits in ten months, middle hit at 35.8. Pluto needed only about 35 years to cover the quarter from late Virgo to late Sagittarius, because that stretch includes Scorpio, where it moves fastest.
Person A, born 1990: square at about 45
Birth: 14 March 1990, 08:30, Rotterdam (07:30 UT). Natal Pluto 17°37' Scorpio, retrograde. Square point 17°37' Aquarius.
| Date (UT) | What happened | Pluto | Age |
|---|---|---|---|
| 27 Oct 2033 | turned direct, 3°13' short of the square point | 14°24' Aquarius | |
| 23 Mar 2034 | hit 1 (forward) | 17°37' Aquarius | 44.0 |
| 19 May 2034 | turned retrograde, 0°40' past the point | 18°18' Aquarius | |
| 17 Jul 2034 | hit 2 (backward) | 17°37' Aquarius | 44.3 |
| 29 Oct 2034 | turned direct, 1°41' short of the point | 15°57' Aquarius | |
| 30 Jan 2035 | hit 3 (forward) | 17°37' Aquarius | 44.9 |
| 20 May 2035 | turned retrograde, 2°11' past the point | 19°49' Aquarius | |
| 4 Oct 2035 | hit 4 (backward) | 17°37' Aquarius | 45.6 |
| 31 Oct 2035 | turned direct, 0°09' short of the point | 17°28' Aquarius | |
| 26 Nov 2035 | hit 5 (forward) | 17°37' Aquarius | 45.7 |
| 21 May 2036 | next retrograde turn, 3°41' past the point, so no further hit | 21°19' Aquarius |
Five hits over 1.7 years, middle hit 30 January 2035 at 44.9. The direct turn of 31 October 2035 stopped only 9' short of the point, which is why hits 4 and 5 are just 53 days apart. All of these dates are model projections.
Person B, born 2002: square at about 54
Birth: 20 January 2002, 11:05, Ghent (10:05 UT). Natal Pluto 16°40' Sagittarius. Square point 16°40' Pisces.
| Date (UT) | What happened | Pluto | Age |
|---|---|---|---|
| 27 Nov 2054 | turned direct, 3°07' short of the square point | 13°33' Pisces | |
| 8 May 2055 | hit 1 (forward) | 16°40' Pisces | 53.3 |
| 16 Jun 2055 | turned retrograde, 0°19' past the point | 16°59' Pisces | |
| 27 Jul 2055 | hit 2 (backward) | 16°40' Pisces | 53.5 |
| 28 Nov 2055 | turned direct, 1°52' short of the point | 14°48' Pisces | |
| 13 Mar 2056 | hit 3 (forward) | 16°40' Pisces | 54.1 |
| 17 Jun 2056 | turned retrograde, 1°33' past the point | 18°13' Pisces | |
| 1 Oct 2056 | hit 4 (backward) | 16°40' Pisces | 54.7 |
| 29 Nov 2056 | turned direct, 0°38' short of the point | 16°03' Pisces | |
| 24 Jan 2057 | hit 5 (forward) | 16°40' Pisces | 55.0 |
| 19 Jun 2057 | next retrograde turn, 2°46' past the point, so no further hit | 19°27' Pisces |
Five hits, middle hit 13 March 2056 at 54.1, a projection three decades ahead. Births 31 years apart, square ages 18 years apart: Bristol's quarter ran through Pluto's fast signs, Person B's through Capricorn and Aquarius, where Pluto has already slowed.
2,184 births: square age by birth year
Every first waxing square in the sample was complete inside the Pluto routine's range. The 24 births in 2010 had the latest ones, all over by 21 February 2073, with the direct turn that closes them by 19 December 2073, so none was cut off and nothing is missing from the figures. Ages are middle-hit ages.

| 2005 to 2009 | 120 | 54.6 to 61.1 | 58.1 | 24 / 96 |
| 2010 | 24 | 59.4 to 62.1 | 60.8 | 0 / 24 |
Read down the median column and the U shape is plain: the square age falls by about two years for every five years of birth until the late 1960s, flattens, then climbs again, faster than it fell. The bottom of the curve is around births in 1968, whose median middle-hit age was 36.4.
Even within a single birth year the age is not one number. The middle-hit ages of the 24 births in one year differed by up to 3.4 years, partly because Pluto moves on through the year and partly because the middle hit of a five-hit square sits later in the event than that of a three-hit square.
The extremes: born 15 August 1967 with natal Pluto at 19°24' Virgo, the middle hit came at 35.7; born 15 February 2010 with natal Pluto at 4°45' Capricorn, at 62.1.

The sign groups overlap in birth date because Pluto moves back and forth across each sign boundary for a year or two. The numbers of births per sign follow from how long Pluto stays in each sign, not from any choice in the sample.
The pattern follows from where the quarter runs. Natal Pluto in Virgo or Libra puts the whole quarter through Scorpio and Sagittarius, the stretch around Pluto's closest approach to the Sun in 1989, so the square comes earliest. Natal Pluto in Cancer or Sagittarius puts the quarter through stretches where Pluto is slow, so the square comes late.
Why three or five hits, and never one
Each year Pluto turns retrograde for about five months and moves back by 2.0° to 2.8°. In the 1920 to 2099 track, that backward stretch was always longer than Pluto's net progress over the year (from about 1.0° in Aries to 2.6° in Scorpio), so the yearly loops overlap and leave no gap. Every degree Pluto passes is crossed at least three times: forward, backward, forward.
Where two consecutive loops cover the same degrees, a point inside the overlap is crossed five times. The overlap is small where Pluto is fast (about 0.2° in Scorpio, against 2.6° of yearly progress) and large where it is slow (about 0.7° to 0.9° in Aquarius against 1.4° to 1.7°). That is why five-hit squares were rare for natal Pluto in Leo, whose square point lies in Scorpio, and the majority for natal Pluto in Sagittarius and Capricorn, whose point lies in Pisces or Aries.
From first to final hit, three-hit squares in the sample spanned 0.78 to 0.88 years and five-hit squares 1.52 to 1.74 years.
No turning point reached a square point without crossing it, so there were no touches. 199 turning points came within 3' of a square point. Checked independently in the Swiss Ephemeris, 198 of them lay on the same side of the point as in the production track. The exception: for a birth on 1 February 1992, Pluto turned retrograde on 23 May 2037 just 0.13" past the point, giving two hits less than a day apart and a five-hit square. In the Swiss Ephemeris that turn stops 0.8" short, which would make it a three-hit square. The page keeps the production count; a five-minute rescan of the production track found the same two crossings. Cases like this are where hit counts are least stable.
Birth time
Natal Pluto moves very little in a day. A predeclared check, moving each worked birth 12 hours earlier and later, shifted natal Pluto by 0.007° to 0.016° and the hit dates by up to about 15 hours (Bristol and Person A) or about a day (Person B). All three kept their three or five hits. That is an observed result for these births, not a guarantee: a birth whose square point lies near a turning point can gain or lose two hits with a small change in time or source.
Precision and the Swiss check
Four things are kept apart here:
- The arithmetic. Each hit was solved to under a minute within the production model. That is a numerical tolerance only.
- The model. The Meeus Pluto theory has its own accuracy, which is not the solver's.
- The repository's tests. The project compares this Pluto with the Swiss Ephemeris at daily noon from 25 December 1919 to 8 January 2061, with a 0.05° position allowance and a separate station-timing allowance, plus a wider daily position check from 1885 to 2099. Those are regression allowances for the whole track, not error bars on these dates. Person B's square, and every sample square after 2061, lies inside the wider check only.
- What Swiss showed for these dates. As an independent reference, and never as a source of any date here: Swiss natal Pluto was within 0.17" of the production value for the three births; Swiss Pluto was within 1.6" of the square point at all 13 worked hits; solving the hits again with Swiss Pluto moved them by up to about 44 minutes (46 with a Swiss natal point); every turning point fell on the same UT date.
The slower the planet, the more time an arc-second is worth. With Pluto moving only a few arc-minutes a week near its turns, a difference of 1" between two sources can shift a hit by most of an hour.
How astrologers read it
Astrologers who use the Pluto square tend to describe it as a period of reassessment around control and change. Take that as an optional prompt for reflection, nothing more. The square does not predict events, a crisis, health, relationships or money, an exact date is not a turning point, and the different ages on this page are not a ranking of generations. What the measurements do show is that a single "Pluto square age" is not real: for some generations it falls in the mid thirties, for others in the fifties or sixties.
Checking your own
- Look up natal Pluto on the free birth chart and write it as a longitude from 0° Aries.
- Add 90° for the square point.
- In a Tropical ephemeris, find every date Pluto reaches that point, and check the turning points around it: expect three hits or five.
- Note your source and its time standard, give dates to the day, and treat dates from November 2026 on as projections.
The general method is in how to read transits without a transit tool. Ask the Astrologist can discuss natal Pluto or dates you have found in your own source; it does not compute transit dates.
