Saturn Transits to Natal Neptune: Two Close Targets, One Moving Saturn
Updated October 26, 2026 · Astrologist.com Editorial
Saturn transits to natal Neptune are the moments when the Saturn now in the sky stands exactly 0°, 60°, 90°, 120° or 180° from the degree Neptune held at your birth, counting both sides, which gives eight points in all. With a lap of about 29.5 years, Saturn reaches each point roughly once a lap: either in a single forward pass, or three times when one of its yearly backward loops spans the point.
When natal Saturn sits close to natal Neptune, as it does in the 1989 example below, this needs one extra step. Moving Saturn then reaches the points measured from natal Saturn (its own cycle) and the points measured from natal Neptune at nearby times: matching crossings can be weeks apart, with much larger gaps where the two get different numbers of crossings, and the two are easy to blur into one. The practical answers from the worked example below:
- They are two series, not one transit. With the two natal planets 2.08° apart, wherever both targets got the same number of crossings, each forward Saturn-to-Neptune crossing came 17 to 25 days after its Saturn-to-Saturn partner.
- The counts can differ. For three of the eight contacts, one target got three crossings and the other got one, because one of Saturn's turning points fell between the two targets. There the first or final dates were up to about nine and a half months apart.
- The order can flip. When Saturn moves backward it reaches the Neptune point first, so inside a three-pass group the gap changes sign.
In astrological reading Neptune often stands for imagination, ideals and blurred edges, Saturn for form, duty and patience. Thinking about the two together is optional. A transit does not make anything happen, and no date on this page says what a person will live through.
For learning only: the site does not compute transits, so there is no calendar, return chart or timing report here. Its free birth chart lists natal positions and nothing more. All dates on this page were worked out away from the site for one made-up person.
Worked example: Antwerp, 15 August 1989, 10:20
Nobody real is described here. Positions were produced by running the site's chart code on a separate machine. The birth date was picked on purpose from a survey of 1989 and 1990 positions: a date when natal Saturn and natal Neptune were about 2° apart, close enough to make the comparison useful and far enough apart for the two series to be told apart. The year alone does not decide this: in that survey, at five-day steps through 1989 and 1990, the computed separation ran from under 0.1° to almost 11°.
- Birth: 10:20 on 15 August 1989 in Antwerp. Belgian summer time (UT+2) ran until 24 September that year, which makes this 08:20 UT; the Antwerp calendar date covers 22:00 UT on 14 August up to, but excluding, 22:00 UT on 15 August.
- Natal Saturn: unrounded 277.876909° (7°52'36.9" Capricorn), moving backward at 0.041° a day. Stored as 277.88° and displayed as 7°52' Capricorn.
- Natal Neptune: unrounded 279.960913° (9°57'39.3" Capricorn), moving backward at 0.018° a day. Stored as 279.96° and displayed as 9°57' Capricorn.
- Separation: Neptune minus Saturn, measured the shorter way round, is +2.084°: Neptune is 2.08° ahead. The site's aspect routine, which uses the chart's stored values and a flat 8° orb, lists a Saturn-Neptune conjunction with an orb of 2.08°. That natal aspect is covered in Saturn conjunct Neptune (natal). It does not make the two natal points one point.
- Window: 1 January 2001, 00:00 UT, to the start of 1 January 2031 (that instant excluded), ages 11.38 to 41.38. Another window would do; this one suits the example.
- How it was computed: moving Saturn uses the same VSOP87B theory (astronomia package) as the chart's natal Saturn, read at six-hour steps. Each crossing was then narrowed until its time was known to within thirty seconds, each turning point to within about a minute; that is bookkeeping, not a statement about real-sky accuracy. All dates are in UT; anything later than October 2026 is a projection. An age is the time since the birth instant divided by 365.2425 days.
Why the window does not start at the birth. At the birth instant moving Saturn stands on natal Saturn by definition. In 1989 it was moving backward; it turned forward on 11 September 1989 at 7°18' Capricorn, crossed natal Saturn again on 7 October and natal Neptune on 8 November. Those crossings belong to the loop Saturn was already in at the birth. They are not a Saturn return, and they say nothing about later contacts. Starting the window in 2001 keeps them out. Saturn's own full return is a separate topic: see what a Saturn return is.
Over the window Saturn began at 24°35' Taurus and ended at 2°55' Gemini, going once round the zodiac and a little more: 374.89° of path, from a lowest point of 24°03' Taurus to a highest of 8°57' Gemini, with 58 turning points. None of the sixteen targets lies in the stretch covered twice, so each target is met in exactly one group.
The pairing rule
The rule was fixed before any dates were compared. For each of the eight contacts, a natal-Neptune group and a natal-Saturn group are a pair when they come from the same offset and the same pass of Saturn round the zodiac. Natal Saturn is only the reference series; the page is about Neptune. Then:
- The gap is the Neptune crossing's time minus the Saturn crossing's time, so a positive gap means the Neptune contact came later.
- First and final crossings are always compared. Both are forward crossings in every group here.
- Individual crossings are paired only when both groups have the same number of crossings in the same directions. When the counts differ, the extra crossings are left unmatched rather than paired with the wrong partner.
- Groups. A run of crossings of the same target counts as one group if Saturn never gets more than 30° from that target between them. Once Saturn has gone more than 30° beyond it after the last crossing, the group is complete.
Two exactly equal targets would describe one crossing with two labels. Targets 2.08° apart describe two different crossings, even on dates close together, and neither confirms the other. A rounded value that looks the same would not prove two targets equal either.

D: Saturn going forward. R: Saturn going backward. The Neptune series has 16 crossings in eight groups, the Saturn series 18. In this window the Saturn conjunction group of 2018 is this person's first Saturn return, listed only as the reference for the Neptune contact beside it. Within a group, the furthest Saturn got from the target between crossings was 6.20°. Every group except one closed inside the window by the 30° rule; the Neptune waxing trine group did not. That group sits at one level on Saturn's running path (399.960913°, natal Neptune at 279.960913° plus 120°), and it closes once Saturn passes 429.960913°. A supplementary check followed that same level through 8 January 2061: it found no additional crossing belonging to this group, and Saturn's 30° departure from it on 15 May 2031. Later Saturn laps will reach the same zodiac degree again, but at a different level on the running path, so those are new groups outside this window, not part of this one. The check is not part of the window and changes nothing in the table or the counts.
Pairs with equal counts. Where both groups have three crossings (opposition, waning sextile, waxing trine), the crossing-by-crossing gaps were +19.6, -26.6 and +23.8 days; +24.5, -28.7 and +21.0 days; and +25.4, -27.9 and +19.2 days. Where both have one, the gap was 17.0 to 17.2 days. The middle gap is negative because Saturn, moving backward, reaches the higher Neptune point first: in those groups the order runs Saturn, Neptune, Neptune, Saturn, Saturn, Neptune.
Pairs with unequal counts. For the waning trine and the conjunction, natal Saturn's target got three crossings and natal Neptune's got one: the final forward crossings are 17.3 and 18.4 days apart, but the first crossings are 271 and 286 days apart. For the waxing square it was the other way round: the first crossings are 18.3 days apart and the final ones 283 days apart. In each case the two extra crossings have no partner.
Why the counts differ
The gap in degrees is the same 2.08° for every contact. The gap in time, and the number of crossings, depend on where Saturn turned.
| Saturn turning point | At | Contact | Position |
|---|---|---|---|
| Backward, 19 Dec 2007 | 8°34' Virgo | Waning trine | 0.69° past the Saturn target, 1.39° short of the Neptune target |
| Backward, 18 Apr 2018 | 9°09' Capricorn | Conjunction | 1.27° past the Saturn target, 0.81° short of the Neptune target |
| Forward, 10 Dec 2026 | 7°55' Aries | Waxing square | 2.03° below the Neptune target, 0.054° above the Saturn target |
In December 2007 and April 2018 Saturn passed the lower, natal-Saturn point, turned back before reaching the natal-Neptune point, crossed the lower point again, and only on its next forward run passed both. In December 2026 Saturn backs down past the higher, natal-Neptune point and turns forward just 0.054° above the lower point, so only the Neptune target is crossed three times. Natal separation alone could not predict any of this: it does not fix the time gap, the order within a group, or the counts.
Recomputing across the birth date
Both natal targets were recalculated together at each trial time, from the same instant, and the pairing was redone from scratch. Over the Antwerp date natal Saturn went from 277.894816° at 00:00 to a limiting 277.853606° at 24:00, and natal Neptune from 279.968713° to 279.950704°, both moving backward, with neither a turning point nor a 0/360° wrap; the final whole minute sampled, 23:59, gives 277.853635° and 279.950717°. The separation grew from 2.074° to 2.097°.
The trial times were 00:00, 00:10 and so on to 23:50, with 23:59 added: 145 in total. At every one of them each pair had the same crossings in the same directions as at 10:20. The closest call was the December 2026 turning point: for every instant of the date it stayed 0.036° or more above the waxing square target from natal Saturn, so that target kept its single crossing. Across the sampled times the first-crossing gaps changed by no more than 0.7 days, and individual dates by 0.15 to 0.85 days. Those figures describe the sampled times only; they do not prove a limit for every instant of the date.
Without a birth time the chart uses noon as an internal anchor, which still shows 7°52' Capricorn and 9°57' Capricorn here, and it leaves out houses. Noon is not offered as a guess at when the person was born.
Rounding, and a second ephemeris
- 0.01° values (277.88° and 279.96°): no count changed; crossings moved by up to 1.5 hours, and no date changed.
- Displayed minutes (7°52' and 9°57', read as 277.8667° and 279.95°): no count changed; crossings moved by up to 5.1 hours, and five dates moved by one day (22 November 2007 to 21 November, 28 May 2018 to 29 May, 20 April 2026 to 19 April, 14 July 2028 to 13 July, 10 March 2029 to 9 March).
The chart rounds to 0.01° and only then drops part-minutes, so a displayed 7°52' Capricorn can stand for anything from 277.865° up to just under 277.885°. The December 2026 turning point stays at least 0.046° above the square target over that whole range, so the displayed minutes settle the counts here. Nearer a turning point, they would not.
As an outside check, everything was compared with the Swiss Ephemeris, which the site itself never uses at runtime. Its natal Saturn is 0.15 arc-seconds lower than the chart's and its natal Neptune 0.40 arc-seconds lower. Swiss Saturn was no more than 0.35 arc-seconds from the chart's target at any of the 34 crossings. Re-solving every crossing with Swiss Saturn shifted it by 0.04 hours or less when aimed at the chart's natal targets, and by 0.03 hours or less when aimed at targets made from Swiss natal Saturn and Neptune (each re-solved time is good to about thirty seconds). For the 58 turning points in the window, Swiss and the chart differed by no more than 0.32 arc-seconds in position and 0.02 hours in time. All of this describes one example; it is not a guarantee for other dates.
Possible themes when Saturn contacts Neptune
Take these, if at all, together with the sign Neptune is in, its other aspects and, when the birth time is trustworthy, its house. Each is something to think about, not a finding:
- Conjunction. How an ideal or a hope sits beside practical limits.
- Squares. Structure set beside something that resists being pinned down; often read as a prompt to ask which commitments still match what you value.
- Opposition. What you hope for, weighed against what others expect of you.
- Trines and sextiles. Many astrologers treat these as calmer stretches for giving an idea a workable shape.
Patterns, not destiny: this page predicts nothing and explains no event. It does not say a transit produces confusion, loss, illness or disillusionment, or decides anything about work, money or relationships. A Saturn-to-Neptune date falling near a Saturn-to-Saturn date does not combine them into a stronger or different event.
The reverse direction, Neptune moving against natal Saturn, is a different calculation; see Neptune transits to natal Saturn. The same two-target comparison with Pluto moving is in Pluto transits to natal Saturn, and Saturn against a target from a daily table is in Saturn transits to natal Chiron. How far Saturn-Uranus dates move between neighbouring births is in Saturn transits to natal Uranus.
Making the same comparison for your own chart
- Take natal Saturn and natal Neptune from the free birth chart, each turned into a single longitude counted from 0° Aries. Work out the signed separation; do not assume it from the sign or the birth year.
- Choose a window that starts well after the birth, so the loop Saturn was in when you were born does not get counted as new contacts.
- Track Saturn through the window in a Tropical ephemeris on a running scale that keeps counting past 0° Aries and keeps every backward loop. Mark both planets' targets on it, each at its natal value plus the offset plus however many full 360° turns put it on the path.
- Pair groups by offset and by Saturn lap. Compare counts first. Pair individual crossings only when counts and directions match; otherwise compare first and final crossings, but only where both groups actually contain that crossing and both are known to be complete. A group cut off by the window, or one with no partner, is labelled incomplete or unmatched rather than forced into a comparison.
- With an uncertain birth time, take both natal values from each trial instant together and find each one's full possible range over the date. For both natal Saturn and natal Neptune, add each of the eight offsets and each relevant whole number of 360° turns to that whole range, giving target ranges on Saturn's running path. Then check whether any Saturn turning point inside the window, or Saturn's exact level at the window's start or end, lands within any of those target ranges (or, equivalently, subtract the offset and turns from those Saturn levels and compare with the two natal ranges). If one does, work out both sides of it and pair the groups again.
On the repository's own tests: the free chart puts no date limit on Saturn or Neptune, and both come from that VSOP87B routine. A test run for this batch set each planet against Swiss at 12:00 UT daily over 25 December 1919 to 8 January 2061, 51,516 days. Saturn's biggest gap was 3.70 arc-seconds and Neptune's 4.27; every one of Saturn's 272 and Neptune's 280 turning points found a Swiss partner, at most 0.026 hours (Saturn) and 0.054 hours (Neptune) away. The tests would fail above 0.05°, above an 8 arc-second regression limit, or above 0.055 hours (Saturn) and 0.11 hours (Neptune) for a turning point. Noon positions and turning-point times are what these tests measure, not how accurate a transit date is.
For Saturn's own cycle see first and second Saturn return, and for the slower outer-planet contacts of midlife, Neptune and Pluto midlife transits. A method for doing this on paper is in reading transits without a tool. You can also discuss natal Saturn and Neptune, or dates you worked out yourself, with Ask the Astrologist, which does not generate transit dates.
