Venus Return: How Often Venus Comes Back to Your Natal Venus

Updated October 27, 2026 · Astrologist.com Editorial

← Back to Transits

A Venus return is the moment moving Venus reaches the exact degree Venus held when you were born. Your natal Venus is a single fixed longitude; only the Venus in today's sky moves. This page asks what is particular about Venus coming back to that one degree, measured over thirty years for an invented person:

  • About once a year, but never at a steady beat. This birth had thirty Venus returns between 2000 and 2030. The time from one to the next was either about 292 to 297 days or about 403 to 410 days, with nothing in between.
  • The long gaps are the ones with a backward loop in them. Every long gap contained one of Venus's retrograde loops somewhere else in the zodiac, and every short gap contained none.
  • A three-pass return only happens if a loop sits on your degree. In this window the loops covered about 110° of the zodiac in total, but none of them covered this natal Venus, so all thirty returns were single passes.
  • Eight years later, nearly the same date. Each return had a partner almost exactly eight calendar years on, arriving between 3.8 and 13.3 hours early. That is a measured near-repeat for this window, not an exact law.

The general idea of a planet coming back to its own natal degree, and how one backward loop turns a single crossing into three, is explained on Mars Return. This page does not repeat that; it sticks to what Venus does differently.

Educational page. Astrologist.com offers no transit or return tool: there is no return calculator, transit calendar or report on this site. The free birth chart gives natal positions only, and all dates here come from an offline calculation for an invented person.

Only moving Venus against one fixed natal Venus is followed here. No second chart is drawn up for the return moment, nothing is relocated, and no return chart is interpreted; those techniques sit outside this site's method. Being born while Venus was retrograde is a separate, natal subject, covered in Venus retrograde in the natal chart.

Whose Venus, and which thirty years

The example person is the invented Antwerp birth already used on Mars transits to natal Venus, taken over without any change. Nothing about Venus returns was looked at before reusing it, and the window and every counting rule below were written down before the first crossing was solved.

  • Birth: 10:20 local time on 19 August 1989 in Antwerp. Belgian summer time (UT+2) was in force, so the instant is 08:20 UT.
  • Natal Venus: unrounded 181.505733°, which is 1°30'20.6" Libra, moving forward at 1.189° a day. The chart stores 181.51° and shows 1°30' Libra. The unrounded value is the target for every return on this page.
  • Window: from 1 January 2000, 00:00 UT, up to but not including 1 January 2030, 00:00 UT, which covers ages 10.37 to 40.37.
  • Method: Venus comes from the same planetary routine the chart uses (the astronomia package's VSOP87B theory, apparent geocentric longitude), with Universal Time turned into the ephemeris time scale exactly as the chart does. Venus was sampled once an hour; each crossing was then narrowed to under thirty seconds, and each turning point was solved on its own to under a minute. These are solver tolerances, not a statement of how accurate the model is. Times are UT. Anything dated after October 2026 is a projection from the same model, not a forecast.

Counting rule, fixed in advance. Venus's longitude was followed as one continuous path, without restarting at 0° Aries, so the natal degree becomes a fresh target level, natal Venus plus a whole number of 360° laps, each time round. A return is all the crossings of one such level. Grouping crossings by a 30° departure was only to be used if the measured path showed returns cleanly separated with no overlap; it did, as shown below. A turning point landing exactly on the natal degree would count as a touch and be listed separately from crossings.

What Venus did between 2000 and 2030

At the start of the window Venus stood at 0°57' Sagittarius, moving forward, 59.46° past natal Venus. At the end it stood at 19°32' Capricorn and was moving backward, having turned on 16 December 2029. Followed without resets it covered 10,848.59°, which is thirty full laps plus 48.59°.

Venus turned backward 19 times inside the window and forward 18 times. That makes 18 complete loops plus the final backward turn, whose forward turn comes after the window closes. Each loop lasted 40.9 to 43.0 days and took Venus back 15.41° to 16.51°.

Venus crossed the natal degree once on each of thirty laps. Each crossing was forward, at 1.00° to 1.25° a day, and every one is a complete return: Venus was more than 30° away from the target level both before and after, and never within 30° of two levels at once. The largest swing back toward a target level during any return was 0.05°, simply the size of the hour step around one forward crossing.

All thirty returns

The column on the right says whether one of Venus's backward loops happened between the previous return and this one. The loop is never on the natal degree here; it is wherever Venus happened to turn in that lap.

Thirty returns and thirty crossings, at ages 11.04 to 39.99. Returns 28 to 30 (2027 to 2029) are model projections. Across the whole window the first crossings averaged 364.71 days apart, close to a year. Not one gap was near that average: they split into 292.1 to 297.2 days and 402.9 to 410.3 days.

The split comes from the loops. On a lap with no loop, Venus goes round once at its usual forward pace, between about 1.0° and 1.25° a day here, and gets back in roughly ten months. On a lap that contains a loop, Venus first slows, then gives back fifteen or sixteen degrees over six weeks, and has to cover that ground again, so the lap stretches to over thirteen months. All 18 long gaps contain exactly one loop each, and none of the 11 short gaps contains one.

The returns also wander through the calendar. For a person born on 19 August, the Venus returns in this window fell anywhere from 8 August to 10 November. Venus moves alongside the Sun but not in step with it, so its returns do not cling to the birthday the way the Sun's do; for what the Sun itself does, see Solar return date.

Why none of these returns came in threes

A return turns into three crossings only when one of Venus's loops spans the natal degree: Venus turns backward somewhere past it and forward again somewhere before it. The 18 loops in this window grouped into five zodiac zones, around late Pisces and Aries, Gemini, Leo and early Virgo, late Libra and Scorpio, and Capricorn into early Aquarius. Each zone was revisited every eight years, about 2.1° to 2.5° earlier in the zodiac each time.

Two zones lie either side of this natal Venus at 1°30' Libra, and neither reached it:

Loop Turns backward Turns forward Distance from natal Venus
Jul to Sep 2007 27 Jul 2007, 2°57' Virgo 8 Sep 2007, 16°35' Leo backward turn 28.55° short of it
Jul to Sep 2015 25 Jul 2015, 0°46' Virgo 6 Sep 2015, 14°23' Leo backward turn 30.73° short
Jul to Sep 2023 23 Jul 2023, 28°36' Leo 4 Sep 2023, 12°12' Leo backward turn 32.90° short
Oct to Nov 2002 10 Oct 2002, 15°36' Scorpio 21 Nov 2002, 0°03' Scorpio forward turn 28.55° beyond it
Oct to Nov 2010 8 Oct 2010, 13°13' Scorpio 18 Nov 2010, 27°39' Libra forward turn 26.15° beyond
Oct to Nov 2018 5 Oct 2018, 10°50' Scorpio 16 Nov 2018, 25°14' Libra forward turn 23.74° beyond
Oct to Nov 2026 3 Oct 2026, 8°29' Scorpio 14 Nov 2026, 22°51' Libra forward turn 21.36° beyond

The Leo and Virgo loops ended up further from natal Venus each cycle, while the Libra and Scorpio loops came about 2.4° nearer each cycle. The 2026 loop's forward turn on 14 November 2026 is a model projection. Whether a later loop would ever cover 1°30' Libra lies outside the window and was not calculated. No turning point landed on the natal degree, so there are no touches to list.

The same counting does say who would have had a three-pass return in this window. Taken together, the 18 loops covered 109.97° of the zodiac. A natal Venus anywhere inside one of those loop arcs would have had at least one return made of a forward, a backward and a forward crossing during that loop. That is a statement about the sky in these thirty years, not a second worked example.

The eight-year near-repeat

Rule, declared before any returns were calculated. For each return, take its first crossing, add exactly eight calendar years (same day, month and time of day), and pair it with the return whose first crossing lies nearest to that moment. Report the signed drift and whether both members of the pair are single or both are three-pass. If a three-pass return's first crossing had made that pairing misleading, its central crossing would have been compared as a secondary check; the main rule would not be changed after seeing the data.

Returns from 2022 onward have no partner inside the window. The 22 that do:

Every pair matched in structure (single with single), because no three-pass return occurred, which also means the secondary central-crossing check gave the same numbers as the main rule. Every partner arrived early, by 3.8 to 13.3 hours. The drift is not the same for every pair: the returns of 8 August and 10 November drifted least, 3.8 to 6.3 hours, and all the others 11.1 to 13.3 hours.

Any eight consecutive gaps add up to 2,921.4 to 2,921.8 days, just under eight calendar years of 2,922 days, and the sequence of gaps repeats with them: 410.3 days in 2000 to 2001, 2008 to 2009, 2016 to 2017 and 2024 to 2025, and each of the other seven gap lengths likewise recurs every eight returns, changing by no more than 0.4 days from one eight-year cycle to the next. This is a measured near-repeat over these thirty years. It slips a few hours each cycle and the loops move along the zodiac at the same time, so it is not a law that holds forever.

If the birth time were unknown

In Antwerp the birth date ran from 22:00 UT on 18 August up to, but not including, 22:00 UT on 19 August 1989. Across that interval natal Venus rose steadily from 180.993555° to a limiting value of 182.182907° at 24:00, a span of 1.189°, with no wrap at 0° Aries. At 23:59 it was 182.182081°, just short of that limit.

Every turning point in the window, and Venus at the window's two edges, was compared with that whole span on every lap. The closest was the forward turn of 14 November 2026, 20.68° from the span; the window edges were 58.78° and 107.36° away. So no birth time on that date changes the count of thirty single returns.

As a separate check, the returns were worked out again at 145 sample times: every ten minutes from 00:00 to 23:50 local time, plus 23:59. All 145 samples gave thirty single forward returns. Return dates moved by 0.95 to 1.19 days across the samples, most for the early-August returns, where Venus was moving slowest. Those are spreads between sampled times, not proven limits. If no birth time is entered, the free chart works out the planets at local noon and draws no houses.

Stored and displayed degrees, and a second ephemeris

Using the stored 181.51° instead of the unrounded value moved each crossing by 0.08 to 0.10 hours. Reading the displayed 1°30' Libra back as 181.5000° moved them by 0.11 to 0.13 hours. Neither changed a date or the count. The shown 1°30' Libra can stand for any value from 181.495° up to just under 181.512°, and the nearest turning-point level is 21.35° outside that range.

The Swiss Ephemeris, an independent ephemeris, was used only as a cross-check; none of the numbers above came from it. It places natal Venus 0.05 arc-seconds above the chart's value. At all thirty crossings, Swiss Venus was within 0.64 arc-seconds of the chart's target, and solving each crossing again with Swiss Venus shifted it by no more than 0.003 hours, whichever of the two natal values was used as the target. The 37 turning points matched within 0.07 arc-seconds and 0.004 hours. These are differences measured in this one example, not accuracy guarantees.

Reflecting on a Venus return, if you want to

Some astrologers treat a Venus return as a moment to look again at natal Venus, read by its sign and aspects and, with a birth time you trust, its house. If that is useful to you, keep it as reflection only:

  • One crossing. A yearly-ish moment to notice what you currently value, enjoy and find attractive, and how that sits with your natal Venus sign.
  • The rhythm itself. Ten-month and thirteen-month gaps can make a loose calendar for checking in on what you care about, if you like a calendar.
  • Three crossings, for someone whose natal Venus lies in a loop. Some astrologers use the forward, backward and forward passes as a reason to return to the same reflection over a few months.

These are interpretive patterns, not destiny. A Venus return does not cause anything, foretell anything or account for anything that happens, and nothing here is a claim about relationships, love, attraction, money, health or any other outcome.

Doing it for your own natal Venus

  1. Find natal Venus in the free birth chart and write it as one longitude counted from 0° Aries. Remember that a shown minute is a small range, not a single value.
  2. Decide on your years before looking. In a Tropical ephemeris, follow Venus through those years without resetting at 0° Aries, including its backward loops, and note every time it passes your degree.
  3. For each backward loop, write down where Venus turns backward and where it turns forward. Your return during that loop has three crossings only if your natal Venus lies between those two degrees.
  4. Measure the time from each return to the next. Expect two families of gaps; a long gap should contain a loop.
  5. For an unknown birth time, take natal Venus over the whole birth date (about 1.2°) and check that no turning point, and neither end of your years, falls inside that span.

About the checks behind these figures: Venus has no date limit in the free chart. The repository compares it with Swiss at noon on every day from 25 December 1919 to 8 January 2061 and pairs every Venus turning point. In the run for this batch the largest daily difference was 2.15 arc-seconds (root mean square 0.49), and all 176 Venus turning points were paired, the worst 0.011 hours apart. The test limits are 0.05° (with a tighter 8 arc-second check) and 0.025 hours. They concern noon positions and turning points, not return-date accuracy, and they do not turn a projected date into a prediction.

A method without software is in how to read transits without a transit tool. Ask the Astrologist can talk about natal Venus, or about Venus return dates you have worked out yourself; it does not compute return dates.
